Work Process : Taking Blood Culture Start Identify patient.

Blood Culture should be taken and then start on i/v antibiotics within 1 hour of recognition of sepsis. Label the Blood Culture bottle and fill up the lab form including time the specimen is taken Prepare trolley and Blood C&S set Wear mask/ Perform handwashing then wear sterile glove Disinfect the skin area 3 times with Hibitane 2% ( 1:50) in 70% Alcohol. Do not palpate the vein after the skin is disinfected. Leave it to dry (about 15 seconds to 1minute). Apply tourniquet Drape the area with a sterile towel. Perform the venipuncture using a minimum of 10 ml syringe. Change injection needle if re-venipuncture required. Change injection needle if re-venipuncture required. Change the injection needle. Swab the Blood Culture bottle with Hibitane 2% (1:50) in 70% Alcohol. Inoculate blood into the Blood Culture bottle.
