For
Improve Runway Safety Area,
Fairmont Municipal Airport
Marion County, West Virginia
March 1, 2006

The Fairmont-Marion County Regional Airport Authority (FMRAA) is proposing several airport
improvement projects to the Fairmont Municipal Airport. One project is the removal of approach surface
obstructions. These obstructions; trees and aerial utility lines and poles, are located within the Runway 4
approach slope. Currently, the obstructions do not meet FAA design standards for approach surface
penetrations and will be removed. The FMRAA is also proposing end of Runway Safety Area (RSA)
improvements. Currently, the end of Runway 5 does not meet FAA safety area design standards. In an
effort to provide the required RSA length beyond the end of the runway this project will require
relocating an access road and placing and grading sufficient embankment beyond the Runway 4 end.
Embankment for all projects is anticipated to be acquired from on-site material.

The Fairmont Municipal Airport and surrounding property is situated on an area that was
formerly used for prime farmland. Do to urbanization, this area is not considered prime farmland. The
Soils Survey of Marion County prepared by the US Soils Conservation Service confirms this previous
land use by listing the primary soil types as Allegheny Silt Loam, Culleoka, Udorthents, and Zoar Silt
Loams (AgB, U1, ZoB, and ZoC).

The soil characteristics are listed below.

AgB-Allegheny silt loam, 3 to 8 percent slopes

Soils Group: Allegheny Well Drained
Seasonal High Water Table: >6’ Medium Runoff Rate
Moderate Permeability Depth to Bedrock usually > 60”
Capability Subclass: IIe HSG: B

CwF-Culleoka-Westmoreland silt loam, 35 to 65 percent slopes

Soils Group: Culleoka Well Drained
Seasonal High Water Table: N/A Very Rapid Runoff Rate
Moderate Permeability Depth to Bedrock usually 40”-72”
Capability Subclass: VIIe HSG: B

U1- Udorthents, cut and fill

This unit consists mostly of mixed soil material and rock fragments from areas that have
been excavated, graded, or filled. The soils in this unit have been altered or obscured to the
extent that we will have to have onsite geotechnical investigations involving soil borings and
lab testing to determine limitations and potentials of the soils for our proposed uses.

Soils Group: Udorthents Drainability: N/A

Seasonal High Water Table: N/A Runoff Rate: N/A

Soils Group: Zoar Moderately Well Drained
Seasonal High Water Table = 1.5’-3’ Medium to Rapid Runoff Rate
Moderately Slow Permeability Depth to Bedrock usually >60”
Capability Subclass: IIe HSG: C

ZoC-Zoar silt loam, 8 to 15 percent slopes
