III B.Tech I Semester (R05) Supplementary Examinations, November 2011 WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) Dene rainguage density and explain how you would determine the optimum number of rainguages to be erected in a given basin. (b) Neighbouring raingauge stations A, B, C, D, E and F have normal annual rainfalls of 610, 554, 468, 606, 563 and 382mm respectively. During a storm, stations B, C, D, E and F have reported rainfalls of 22, 29, 35, 13 and 25 mm respectively and station ?A? did not report as it was inoperative. Estimate the missing storm rainfall at A by Arithmetic average method and the Normal ratio method. [8+8] 2. (a) Describe ISI standard evaporation pan with a neat sketch. In what way it is dierent from USWB class A land pan. (b) An inltration capacity curve prepared for a catchment indicated an initial inltration capacity of 2.5 cm/hr and attains a constant value of 0.5 cm/hr after 10 hours of rainfall with the Horton?s constant k=6 day 1 . Determine the total inltration loss. [8+8] 3. (a) What does the word unit refer to in the unit hydrograph. Explain with sketches, what do you understand by the principle of linearity and principle of time invariance in the unit hydrograph theory. (b) The peak discharge and time to peak in a 3 h unit hydrograph derived for a basin of area 250 km2 with L = 30 km and Lc = 14 km are 50 m3 /s and 9 h respectively. Assuming that Snyders synthetic unit hydrograph applies, determine the coecient Ct and Cp . [8+8] 4. (a) What do you understand by routing of a ood. Write the basic equations in hydrologic reservoir routing. How is hydrologic routing dierent from hydraulic routing. (b) The inow and outow hydrographs for a river reach are given mine Muskingums coecients K and X for the reach. (a) Explain the various types of lters used in drip irrigation?. Explain various disadvantages of drip irrigation? (b) Explain zig-zag method of irrigation along with a neat sketch [10+6]

7. (a) List out dierent methods used for the estimation of consumptive use of water for a particular crop at a particular place. Explain in detail any one method which is most widely used. (b) A crop requires a total depth of 9.2 cm of water for a base period of 120 days. Find the duty of water. [12+4] 8. (a) For a channel the discharge (Q), Rugosity (N), critical velocity ratio (m), and the bed width depth ratio (B/D) are given. Explain how you would design the channel using Kennedys theory. (b) The slope of a channel in an alluvial soil is 1/5900. Find the channel section and the maximum discharge which can be allowed to ow in it. Take Laceys silt factor f=1.0. The channel is of trapezoidal section, having Side slopes: 1 :1 [8+8] 2
