Each devices conduct for 120 degree and turn-off for 240 degree. Two devices conduct simultaneously as shown above.

VLL = VPhase1 - VPhase2

The output phase voltage (Vphase) consists of 3 levels or steps of voltage whereas the line-toline voltage (VLL) consists of 4 levels. The FFT analysis on the output voltage shows that no triplen harmonic components present in the output voltage as shown below.

The above waveforms also show that no triplen harmonics present in the output voltage. However, the magnitude of the fundamental component is higher than the previous conduction mode. It seems that this conduction mode is better than the 120o conduction mode.

19.3 Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)

The sinusoidal PWM for three-phase inverter is generated by comparing three phase modulating signals with a triangular carrier waveform as shown above.

The result of PWM switching will produce the output waveform as shown above which contain many pulses with different width.

The above waveforms show that no lower order of harmonic components present in the output voltage which is better than 180 or 120 conduction modes. However, the magnitude of the fundamental component is lower than the abovementioned two conduction modes. In practice, the higher frequencies components can be easily removed by installing a low pass LC filter at the output side. Problem 1

A basic three-phase bridge inverter fed from a 400 DC source supplies a star-connected 10 ohm/phase pure resistive load. Determine for 1200 firing control (six step switching). (i) the rms load current and load power (ii) the required rms rating of the inverter switches If the inverter is now used to drive a four-pole, 1500 rpm rated cage induction motor, determine (iii) the voltage to frequency ratio (V/f) of the motor (iv) the output required of the inverter if the speed of the motor is 1200 rpm
