Mountaineering gear Essential Questions: What is a transition sentence or word in writing? Lesson Sequence: 10 min: Students take notes. Place the definition of a transition sentence and examples, found in Craft Lessons, on the board or overhead. Have student copy the notes into their writing journals. Take this time to dress up in the mountaineering gear and become a guest speaker. 10 min: Class discussion. Introduce yourself as the guest speaker and begin talking about mountaineering. After a while ask student what types of transitions could be found in mountaineering. Allow the class to discuss possible types and then lead into comparing mountaineering transitions with writing transitions. 10 min: Examples in writing. Pass out the Moving Madness and Other Examples of Transition Sentences and have the student read them. They should be looking for transition sentences in the Moving Madness story. Take this time to put away the mountaineering gear. Once the students are done reading the handouts, discuss the Moving Madness story and the transition sentences they found in it. Grade Level: Upper Elementary

30 min: Students write. Have student write a paper. Any topic and essay type will work. However, process essays work well with transitions sentences. Emphasis the importance of using transition words and sentences in their piece and require them to use at least one transition sentence/word. (Requirements can be dependant on student skill.) Assessment Procedure: Student will be assessed on their writing pieces and if they have at least one transition sentence/word. Lesson Assessment: The point in the discussion was made relatively quickly and I returned to mountaineering. I should have simply gone on with the lesson. I should have changed out of mountaineering gear before discussing the handouts. Producing a sample writing piece with transitions sentences as a class would have been beneficial.
