ALTAS SHOWSTOPPERS

One time, big time

By Alexandra Jessica Esponga Photos by Arnold Almacen
Bronze is good, Silver is not enough, Gold is our goal. Time after time, the Altas consistently gave heart-stopping and spine-tingling performances and they never fail to give their audience one heck of a show. And this season of the National Cheerleading Championship, the squad of multi-titled coach Ruf Rosario dont just plan to steal the spotlight but

EFORE the University of Perpetual Help SystemDalta steps into the limelight, they would always remind themselves what they were here for.
also redeem something they lost two years ago-the championship they believe is rightfully their own.

One time, big time

This is a once in a lifetime experience and we only have one shot at this, said the 19year old April Bernal. Were going to do our best because in a competition like this, there is no room for mistakes. True enough, with more than a hundred schools participating in the tournament, it will be a

survival of the fittest and whoever survives will be crowned the best in the country. UPHS-Dalta won first place in the National Collegiate Athletics Association 87 and has bagged a total of five NCAA championships but according to Bermudo those trophies werent enough to secure them a victory in the NCC. All teams are tough and a lot improved at iba talaga ang laban dito [NCC], quipped Kathlyn Pereyra, who is also a member of the Team Pilipinas Cheerleading Squad. But no matter how fierce their opponents might be, the Las Pias-based squad are all ready to go against all odds and have their fingers crossed, hoping that they could once again return to the top. And to achieve those expectations, the Altas not only doubled their efforts during practices but also poured more heart and dedication which they know will make their titlerecipe complete. Hindi kami nandoon kasi kailangan, nandoon kami dahil gusto namin, shared Bernal, who suffered from an ACL injury the night before the NCC Championship in 2010. Aside from competing, the Perps also take chances like this tourney not only to collect trophies or medals but also gain new buddies from other teams and learn from them. Magaling kami makisama at sobrang friendly ng team namin, said senior Kristal Bermudo. We talk about our experiences and what we had gone through. Of course, before they get attached with other people, the girls and boys of the squad are already like brothers and sisters and use practice sessions also their time to bond. We hang-out and also have team buildings to tighten the relationship of the team, said rookie Charlyn Godes.

Altas pride
There is more to life than cheering for gold and that is what the Altas has in mind whenever they groove their heart out on the dance floor. And the Perps do better each year because they want to continue the legacy that the other cheerleaders left, they want to write a little of their own piece of history that will soon be passed on as well. They also dedicate their fights to all those who give them motivation, their families, coaches, the school, country and God. Altas will always be Altas, quipped Pereyra. Gold is our goal and that will be for them.

HEY were able to bag the crown thrice in recent history. Theres no doubt they can do it a fourth time when the National Cheerleading Championship holds its finals by the end of the school year.

KILLER pose: April Rosacinia (right) and Majalyn Galang.

The Central Colleges of the Philippines Bobcats is raring to return to the top post. Were ready to take that crown back, says April Rosacinia. The squad has already bested other schools in the NCC in 2007, 2008 and 2010. With a coaching staff led by Arnold Villanueva for ten years now, the CCP Bobcats hinted at fiercer partner stunts, tumblings and pyramids. The squad refused to divulge any more details about their routine aside from that. All they can say is that theyre expecting to floor everyone after theyre done with their performance. Dislodged from the top of the cheerleading pyramid after finishing third in the 2011 NCC, April says it was because they werent able to nail a flawless number. I guess we failed to anticipate that the other squads will improve and become much better, adds Majalyn Galang. The Bobcats acknowledge how the other schools teams got stronger in their performances.

the champs
The result was a wake-up call to the three-time cheerleading champs. The squad now undergoes harder training and conditioning. House rules have also gone stricter. The coaching staff used to be lenient with us but now pag-sinabing bawal, bawal talaga. For example, before they didnt really bother about everyones weight, but now we are required to maintain our weight, shares Maverick Caday. Practices take place nearly the whole year round. After the previous seasons finals, the Bobcats rests for a week or two then resumes with their training to get ready for the next season. We train every day, says Cecilia Lee. And while one can say that these students eat, breathe cheerleading, schoolwork doesnt take a backseat all the same. While members of the squad are given athletic scholarships, they need to maintain good grades to keep these. They admit that its not an easy task to balance cheerleading and schoolwork. Majalyn shares, Habang tumatagal, mas marami kang ginagawa sa school kaya medyo nag-aagawagaw talaga yung time. But nope, they dont get tired of cheerleading. Mahal namin ang cheering at gusto naming manalo. Watch out for the CCP Bobcats when they compete in the NCR Qualifiers in February 2012.

For a squad which built on its momentum in the last two years, TSU had bucked stereotypesproving that it is for real. Shortly after notching the top slot in the Central Luzon qualifying in 2010, TSU pulled-off a

shocker by finishing 7th in the nationals. Slowly but surely, the Tigers were making their presence felt in the cheerleading tilt. Our eyes are on the prize, said TSU coach Angelo Louise Yangco who had been mentoring the squad for three years now. We started as a squad that represented only a college (department), now we represent the University, recalled Yangco. Tarlac State may no longer comprise the same squad they had two years ago, but Yangco is far from worried, noting that their fresh talents might be their trump cards going into the looming competition. Our newbies are hungry, noted Yangco. They want to shake off the bitter taste of falling shortsettling for 1st runner-upbehind Angeles University Foundation in the regional qualifying. Thats one of our advantages. Given the rookieladen squad, Yangco told INQUIRER LIBRE that hes happy to have his fellow coach Raymond Panzo and his core squad take up the cudgels. We divide the tasks among ourselves, he said. The brunt of stunts and pyramid-building is covered by Raymond while the dance aspect of the routines is mine. But we should be aware of the

hurdles before usNCR schools, he added. Theyve been there and they already know the trend and made the most out of their resources. Perpetual will always be a perennial contender, added Melody Intia; They are always a threat for us, same with the Central Colleges of the Philippines Bobcats, concurred Karla Marie Sanchez who are both regarded by Yangco as members of the squads core group alongside team captain Edsie Kim Canla. For Yangco, CCP inspires the Tigers to shoot for the top. [Bobcats] are the ones who first taught us the basics, he said. 2009 was a learning phase for us. [The] bottomline (is that) competition actually lies not in the stunts or the spectacle each squad has to offerbut in the fineness of our routines and the flawlessness of execution, said Yangco. Despite limited access to equipment and resources, TSU is happy with the support its getting from the school. The schoolespecially Dr. Priscilla Viuya and our sports director, Norberto Jacinto, make sure that we get all the help , Yangco said. With defending champion University of the Cordilleras not participating, Tarlac States chance of getting the national championship has been bolstered. I believe attitude is what will propel us to the top, said Yangco when asked about TSUs edge over the other squads. I always tell the guys to enjoy, for if they do, surely, the crowd as well will enjoy too. Other squads take it too seriously that the fun is no longer reflected in their routines.
