Applications
Many protection and control systems are used in industry. Often applications require various items of equipment to supervise correct operation. Aware of this, FANOX has focused the design of a significant part of their products on specific applications, equipping them with complementary functions which offer a complete protection and control solution in a single unit. All of this is the result of the investigation into the market requirements for specific applications and use of internal skills and knowledge to develop a practical and economic solution. Our wide experience in communication, digitalisation, protection and control materials has allowed us to create an extensive range of applications ranging from a simple voltage control relay, through a complete range of electronic protection for motors, to sophisticated cell protection and control systems for electric substations. This section details some of the characteristic applications of our products involving the integration of various functions in a single unit. These applications are: Motor protection Pump protection Generator protection Elevator protection Medium voltage protection Customized electronic products This catalogue features the characteristics of the units listed in this section.
Motor protection
The electric motor is, perhaps the most important operating device in industry. High cost production and valuable machinery can become completely paralysed due to a fault in a single motor. The cost of a motor rewind or replacement is insignificant when compared to production downtime. Experience shows us that motor protection continues to be a problem, based on the high number of breakdowns occurring on a daily basis, mainly caused by: overloads, locked rotor, phase imbalance or phase loss, long and heavy start-ups, excessive operational cycles, or heating from non-electric causes. Over 60% of faults are due to causes not adequately detected by conventional protection systems. These produce excessive heat in the windings, which causes a drastic reduction in the operating life of the motor. FANOX offers the ideal solution with its wide range of electronic protection relays which, worldwide, prevent motors from burning out on a daily basis, with the subsequent savings made on repairs and the resultant downtime The technical advantages that illustrate the benefits of FANOX relays as follows: Thermal memory which continuously memorises heating and cooling during startup, operation, overload and shutdown cycles. The immediate detection of missing phases, even with the motor operating with a small load, shutting it down quickly to prevent costly faults. Identification of the cause of the trip. The relays instantly signal the cause of the trip, permitting the rapid identification of the fault, and therefore rapid actions to be taken. FANOX relays can also fitted with an external OD display module, the size of a 22mm diameter button, which, mounted on the exterior of the motor control cabinet or central unit, displays the cause of the motor stoppage. The display module also incorporates a reset button for operator convenience. All of the above features, together with the connection of the relay to heat sensors (PTCs) fitted in the motor to provide protection against overheating, the different classes of trip to adapt the protection against overloads for all class of applications and the incorporation of protection against phase reversal, have made FANOX relays into the most reliable on the market, far exceeding the limited functions of other conventional methods of protection such as thermal relays, electro-thermal relays or motor protection relays. All in all, FANOX motor protection relays provide significant advantages at a very competitive price, significantly reducing downtime by prolonging the operating life of the motor and reducing maintenance and rewinding costs.
Pump protection
One of the most important problems for pumps during operation is the efficient detection of, and protection against dry running. The most commonly used detection system is the use of float switches and level probes, although the reliability of these methods is rather limited given the operation faults that occur as a result of sludge and particle deposits on the electrodes, low water conductivity, etc... Keeping the motor running in excessive overload conditions is equally important. This is normally carried out using thermal bi-metallic relays, although these are not always effective. Other faults that usually occur are those related to the phase loss or phase sequence reversal in the case of three-phase pumps or voltage increases in single-phase pumps. Just one of these occurrences could cause elevated losses, leaving the pumps out of service. FANOX electronic relays are specifically designed for the complete protection of both single-phase and three-phase pumps, or of any other system where no load operation is critical. The great advantage of these relays is that by using the motor itself as a sensor, without the need for external detectors, they control the motor load and stop the motor before a costly fault occurs due to dry running, cavitation, closed valve, etc. In this way awkward float switches and level probes are not required, therefore saving both time and money on installation and maintenance. The underload is controlled by the measurement of undercurrent or of cos for threephase pumps or of just undercurrent for single-phase pumps. The relays memorise the thermal image of the motor during its heating and cooling cycles thereby offering effective protection against overloads. Other aspects worth pointing out are the protection against phase imbalance and phase failure and the detection of the phase sequence to ensure that the motor rotates in the right direction. FANOX relays also provide protection against overvoltage in single-phase pumps. The three-phase relays can also be fitted with the OD display module previously described.
Generator protection
One of the main problems when it comes to protecting a generator is protection against overloads. The use of thermal-magnetic switches, fuses or thermal relays is not effective, as their trip curves do not adapt to the operating limit curve or generator damage curve; this curve relates the generator overload to the maximum time that can be allowed for its operation in these conditions with no significant damage. FANOX offers three devices to maintain the generator within the established operating parameters. The GEN relay provides effective protection against overloads and imbalance or a missing phase, signalling the cause of the trip. It is equipped with a thermal memory which memorizes the generator heating and cooling in such a way that it will trip faster if another overload has been detected previously. Its 16 selectable trip curves, situated below the generator limit curve, allow for optimal operation without overloads causing irreparable damage. The H relay controls the frequency, ensuring it is kept within the previously set limits. It has 2 independent output relays and the minimum or maximum frequency output relay is activated according to the cases selected with the delay. The U3 relays are used to control the voltage value of the installation.
Lift protection
A fundamental aspect for the safety and correct operation of an elevator is to ensure that the electrical installation is protected against problems caused by phase asymmetries or a missing phase or reversal of the phase sequence, and to ensure that the motor operates within the established load limits. Also the air temperature of the machine room or of the control panel must be kept within the limits established by the EU Directive for Lifts, to guarantee the correct operations of the items installed there. FANOX has relays specifically developed to cover these requirements. The T2 relay monitors the air temperature in the machine room or the control panel, according to standard EN81-1. Two potentiometers allow the temperature limits to be adjusted to between minimum limits of 5 to +5 and maximum limits of +40 to 55. The T2 is suitable for installation in lifts with and without a machine room. The S phase control relay protects against asymmetries, missing phases and phase sequence inversion. ST and GL relays are available for motor protection. The first of these detects asymmetries, phase loss and phase sequence reversal and motor overtemperature by means of PTC sensors. The GL relay is a current relay which is equipped for protection against overload with thermal memory, blocked rotor, asymmetry and phase loss, incorrect phase sequence and overtemperature by means of PTC sensors.

For three-phase induction motors of up to 22 kW / 400 V. Built in heat dissipater and electro-mechanical bypass relay. Substitutes the conventional contactors with a greater operating life. One in direct start-up and three in star-delta start-up.
Operation
These units represent the best protection against the premature ageing of motors and mechanical items. Sudden starts and stops, that can produce damages in the bearings and gears of the motors, are eliminated. They prevent frequent faults and objects falling onto conveyer belts. They reduce mechanical impact in motors, axles, gears and belts, significantly prolonging the operating life of the controlled units. An electronic circuit with semiconductors starts the motor without using the contacts. Hence these do not withstand sparks or erosion. When the minimal voltage of the motor is reached the semiconductors are bypassed by the relay contacts. Thanks to this technology, the ES starters have a longer operating life than conventional contactors. They are easy to install and control. They can operate by means of an external control signal, such as a programmable automaton.

Transformation centre protection. Phase reversal, instantaneous neutral and overtemperature by external detector. Self-powered and with auxiliary supply. PC communication programme: SIcom.
Protection
The centre protection possesses two cut-off items: Breaker: these centres have a breaker in the medium voltage part with a limited cut-off capacity. This permits the elimination of the greatest amount of incidents, particularly those related with the neutral. The breaker must always be closed manually. Fuse: when the leakage current is extremely high, the breaker does not have sufficient cut-off capacity, discharging this responsibility on the fuses. The protection is blocked, when there is more than 300 A of leakage current.
The SIA protection is specifically designed for the protection of transformation centres, associated to a mixed cut off item, via breaker or fuse. The transformation centre has a medium voltage input line, a transformer of, for example, 500kVA or 1MVA of nominal power and various low voltage lines.

Supply
As well as functions of the secondary cell protection another important characteristic of these transformation centres is the need to eliminate their maintenance. A way in which this maintenance can be reduced is to have the electronics self fed from the operation current itself. This avoids the use of batteries, chargers, etc. It also admits another two types of supply: Auxiliary voltage at 230 Vac. Via communications port RS232 using a 9V battery. This permits the SIA to be powered and set when setting in operation or to check operation under any circumstance.

Line protection. Instantaneous and reverse phase and neutral. Internal backup batteries, to operate in the case of an auxiliary power supply failure. SMS communication for maintenance staff. Multifunction digital and/or analogue inputs and programmable outputs which permit great versatility.
Protection
The protection functions of the SIL unit are those of the line itself, one instantaneous time phase and neutral current, both with 2 levels, and one inverse time phase and inverse time neutral with selectable inverse, very inverse and extremely inverse time curves, according to the IEC standard. Working principles: The toroidal transformer is installed between the source and the load. The system works on the current balance principle. In a correct installation the vector sum of the currents is zero and the relay will not trip. In case of an insulation fault on the circuit a leakage current flows to earth. Now the vector sum of the current passing through the transformer is not zero, this inbalance is detected by the transformer, which induces a current in the secondary winding which is connected to the relay. If the fault level is higher than the selected sensitivity, and when the trip time delay has elapsed, the relay trips and actuates on the shunt trip of a circuit breaker or the coil of a contactor interrupting the supply to the load. The dimensioning of the toroidal transformer depends on the diameter of all active wires (not earth conductors) put through the transformers.

FANOX relays
Our R+D Division has allowed FANOX to develop a wide range of easy-to-install and operate electronic relays, at truly competitive prices, which will save downtime and money. FANOX motor protection relays work with the current measured in real time. The current, which is read by three current transformers built into the relays, is electronically processed and used as a model of the thermal image of the motor, and to compare it with the values set on the relay. The three power supply cables to the motor are not directly connected to the relay, but pass through its corresponding holes. This provides motor protection against: Overloads: since the relay creates a model of the thermal image of the motor during its heating and cooling cycles. In this way, in overload conditions, the relay will take into consideration previous operating conditions of the motor, and will trip faster if the relay has detected other previous overloads. This thermal memory is independent of the auxiliary voltage supply of the relay so that it is stored even when this voltage is cut off or disconnected. The different tripping curves available for selection in the relays allow for precise adjustment to any kind of motor startup or work cycle. Phase inbalance and phase loss: even if the motor is running below its full load current. Incorrect phase sequence detection is highly important when the correct phase sequence is critical as in compressors, pumps, fans and other applications (GL, P, PF).
The maximum section of 700V insulated wires that can pass through the holes are:
C GL, P, PF, G, BG, GEN 16 mm2 35 mm2
Assembly attached to other components: it is recommended to separate the relays of other units or items that could cause strong magnetic fields, such as power or control transformers, contactors, frequency variators or high current busbars.
In star-delta starting, the relay or the current transformers must be installed between the fuses or circuit breaker and the contactor.

Underload by undercurrent: protects the motor against working without load, very important in pumps (P and PS). Protection against no-load operation: underload protection by cos has been incorporated so that the relay differentiates precisely between very low load and no-load operations, and drops out in the latter case (PF). In addition, when the relay is connected to thermistor sensors (PTC), it protects the motor against electrical and non-electrical overheating (GL, G and BG). A visual display of the tripping reason allows maintenance personnel to identify and immediately act on the underlying causes. The use of the OD display makes this operation much easier. All of this make FANOX relays the ideal protection for your motors (pumps, compressors, fans, etc).
Relays used in combination with frequency inverters: a) Not to be used with frequency inverters: - GL relays if the protection against phase sequence selector is in the "ON" position. - P and PF relays. b) The following can be used with frequency inverters: - GL relays if the protection against phase sequence selector is in the "OFF" position. - C, G and BG relays. Never connect the relay or current transformers of the auxiliary power supply to the inverter output. Connection between the PTC sensors and the relay (GL, G and BG). For PTC connection lengths over 100 m or when the influence of high frequency transient voltages is expected, it is adviseable to use screened cable and connect the screen to terminal T1. Note: every relay comes with an instruction manual providing information on its correct installation and setup.
As one can see, a 10C increase in temperature reduces the useful life of the motor by half. The most reliable protection options in common use are: Fuses or circuit breakers for short-circuit protection. Electronic motor protection relays with thermal memory. Contactors for motor control.

2.1. Trip class / tripping time (IEC 947-4-1). Relays C, GL, P, PF, G, BG and GEN
The different trip classes / tripping time enable the user to select the overload protection according to the various motor applications in either short or long start-ups and different generator uses. The class number or the tripping time refers to the maximum approximate time in seconds allowed for the direct start of the motor from a cold condition. To select the trip class or tripping time (t6xIB) use the corresponding dip switches. The recommended values are listed in the following tables.

This adjustment is to be made according to the nominal current of the motor IN indicated in its characteristics plate. The value to be set IB is the same as IN. The relay trips with overloads above 1,1 x IB IB= IN
2.4 Undercurrent.
Single phase relay PS
The setting of the underload trip level is made using a potentiometer in wich a factor between 0,4 and 0,9 is to be chosen. By multiplaying this factor by the adjusted IB , we obtain a current value under wich the relay will trip and disconnect the motor. The trip is delayed 5 seconds. a) If the value of the IB of the motor without load is known: To avoid unwanted trips it is recommended to adjust the value 15% above the IB of the motor without load. Example:
on
1 2 3
off
ON
R-S-T
a) For motor or generator rated currents (IN) within the range of the relay, the setting IB must be equal to the IN of the motor or generator. IB = IN
b) For motor rated currents below the range of the relay, the setting IB must be equal to the rated current of the motor IN multiplied by the number of times that the conductors have been passed through the relay holes.
L2 L1 L3

c) For motor or generator rated currents (IN) above the range of the relay, use three current transformers .../5 in combination with the C9, GL16, P19, PF16, G17, BG17 or GEN10 according to application.

b) If the value of the IB of the motor without load is unknown: If the pump is adequately dimensioned, the recommended value for this factor is 0,7. Adjust the potentiometer "undercurrent" at 0,7. If the pump is excessively dimmensioned, and during this functioning unwanted trips should occur, the underload adjusted factor should be reduced to 0,6 approximately.
3. Start up the motor and run it with the minimum estimated load. 4. Slowly turn the cos potentiometer clockwise until the relay trips and the cos LED lights up.
C9, G17 and BG17: Its recommended always to pass the conductors two times or more through the holes in the relay.
5. Turn the cos potentiometer anticlockwise until the cos is set at approximately 30% less than the previous value (point 4). 6. Set the underload trip delay using the 3 corresponding dip switches.
