A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
A guide to Millets equipment: a previously unpublished creation thats close to our heart !
Equipment (gear), is the prominent focus of Millets development. Creating and developing technical products subject to the specific constraints of mountaineering, climbing, mountain routes and trekking is our daily challenge. And has been for over 50 years! From the first rucksack (designed by the expert hands of the Millet brothers for the French expedition to Annapurna), to our current Radikal shoe collection, our passion for equipment has continued to grow and our technical skills have developed along with it. Today, our technical notoriety is well renowned. Our products meet specific needs and we offer a broad range of Equipment, from rucksacks to boots and shoes, ropes, climbing gear, sleeping bags and more. Everything about our equipment is technical, everything requires manufacturing know-how and everything has a dedicated function the concepts, the constructions, the materials, etc. Developing a good product requires a major investment in research and development and can only be done with in-depth knowledge of the activities and the use constraints they entail. The design process involves many essential stages: need analysis, function optimisation, integration of technologies, prototyping, laboratory and field tests, marketing authorisation, etc. The entire rigorous manufacturing process therefore depends on the products acceptance in the field its our constant challenge! But in order to behave professionally right up to the end customer, the marketing approach for technical equipment must be accompanied by explanations. And of course, by giving clear explanations, we keep our customers satisfied and help them use our products correctly.
CORPORATE
All those involved in the distribution chain have an important role to play, therefore. Millet accompanies its products right up until they enter the shops The technical sales assistants and specialists then take over and sell them to our customers. This is why we believe this Equipment Guide is essential today. Like the rope in a roped party, its a strong link from us to our shops and so to you our customers too. We really have put our all into this guide: our experience, our know-how, our knowledge, our technical hints and tipsour energy and our passion... We already know that this Guide nobly serves Millet and its products, but if it could be a means of expressing our respect for mountain climbers and the sales assistants and advisors who help them choose their products that would really make us happy. Sportingly Yours. The Millet Team

TERRITORIES MOUNTAINEERING
THE UNIVERSE
The Millet reference universe. Mountaineering, the new generation alpine style and high-altitude expeditions. High mountain or adventure terrain. Getting to know the summits and feeling the pure pleasure of climbing. A taste for verticality and exertion. The spirit of conquest.
THE ELEMENT
Ice, snow, mixed or rocky, depending on the season, the weather and the mountainous terrain. Frozen waterfalls and winter channels, the snow-capped summits of the world, the north faces of the Alps in spring or the sunny granite of the south faces.
Self commitment, a love for climbing and excelling physically. Verticality as an essential value. A demanding world where theres no room for error and safety is crucial.
Reaching the summits: Successfully making the climb using Alpine Style ethics.
THE ELEMENT
The earth in its pure state, nature in all these forms. Deserts spanning endless lines, the mountains of all the continents, high-altitude passes blown by the winds, rich, deep forests and high plateaus.
Finding happiness in walking, one step after the other. Behaving humbly and respectfully, walking along with the spirit of a keen traveller. Finding themselves again, recharging their batteries and giving life meaning by discovering landscapes and massifs.
THE ELEMENT
Mountain hiking trails. Steep paths and high-altitude passes. Stony paths, scree and rocky slants. Fast flowing mountain torrents. Grassy, slippery and muddy slopes. Root-filled undergrowth and countryside routes.
A runner above all else. Always ready to compete, to achieve a better time or conquer a tougher, longer or more competitive route. Pushing their performance to the limits of possibility and taking no chances. Organisation and a lifes sacrifice, specific training, nutrition, hydration, strategic route choices, sophisticated performance measurement, a meticulous and technical study of products (weight, ergonomics, practicality, benefits, etc.).
TERRITORIES CLIMBING
THE UNIVERSE
Climbing. Fulfilling an ambition to climb on all the rocks of the world. The pure pleasure of moving forward. A taste for verticality and slants. A playful spirit and social interaction.
THE ELEMENT
The rock, the boulder. Limestone, sandstone or granite, depending on the spots and the climbing style. - The long cliff routes of the Verdon, Riglos and Dolomites. - The Big Walls of the Yosemite and the granite of the Chamonix peaks. - The Bleau boulders, the hellish slants of southern France and urban indoor climbing centres.
Playing with the vertical and overhang dimension. A taste for both physical and mental exertion. Thinking about climbing all day long. Respecting the ethics of the sport. Having a great time with friends.
Playing with verticality: Giving the body freedom of movement and pumping with adrenaline.

FABRICS
Schmerber test : We only use coated fabrics. Not only are they more hardwearing because the coating helps keep the threads in place, but they are all waterproof. We only use fabrics with a tested water repellent rating of above 1000mm. Its important to remember that although the fabric is waterproof when new, it does wear off a little with use, and the bag itself is not waterproof. Water can still penetrate through the seams, which is why all our trekking and hiking bags come with a rain cover. Resistance to traction, resistance to tear spread, resistance to cutting: We test all of our fabrics in our own test laboratory and these mechanical resistances define the sturdiness of our fabrics. Depending on the area in which the fabric is used on the pack, we use all our experience to decide on these resistance parameters to match then perfectly with the intended use. Resistance to abrasion : This test is particularly relevant to rucksack fabrics because these products are exposed to often intense conditions of use.

SUPPLIES
Our buckles and zips are selected from the best suppliers. They are all the result of a long development process and laboratory and field tests. Whats more, we test all our product components before including them in our productions.

The European reference standard EN892 defines several required characteristics which are all aimed at limiting the impact force at the moment the fall is arrested. The impact force must not exceed 1200 daN (i.e. the accepted equivalent of 1200 kg see below) for single ropes, and 800 daN for double ropes.
Newton / daN: In non-scientific language, we generally confuse mass (in kilograms) and weight (which should be expressed in newtons). Knowing that a mass of 1 kg weighs about 10 N on planet earth (9.81 N if we take the normal acceleration value of gravity g = 9.81 m/s), we generally admit that 1 kilogram-force (former unit of weight which adds to the confusion) is practically equal to 1 daN (1 decanewton, or 10 N). In reality, climbers (normally) learn to clip a rope in a karabiner when belaying starts in order to eliminate the risk of a factor 2 fall, which would be extremely serious (risk of bodily injury and need for rope disposal). In reality, the factor range most frequently encountered is 0.2-0.8. Caution: A pure factor 2 fall would theoretically involve a 2.5m-long rope falling 5m, although the rope must be correctly attached beforehand. The 30cm added to do this will increase the length of the rope, thus helping to absorb the impact and reducing the factor to about 1.77 in practice instead of 2 in theory. Some manufacturers point this out. Out of habit and convenience, however, everyone refers in this case to a factor of 2, and all manufacturers conduct their tests in the same conditions.

The manufacturers challenge is to guarantee perfect cohesion of these two elements that are so dissimilar in their construction, both while the rope is at rest and being used.

SINGLE ROPE
This is the standard rope used for so-called sports climbing.
In sports climbing, the climbers goal, whatever his ability evel, is to reach the summit of the climbing route marked by a STANCE. To arrive there, he generally tries to use only his hands and feet, to the exclusion of any other means or device. He has integrated the risk of falling and focuses on the movements that will allow him to reach his goal. This is lead climbing (the leader). All the belay points and stances are fitted securely and solidly (according to current rules for cliff or climbing wall equipment), and the climber clips a single rope as he ascends because this is the easiest and quickest solution. When he reaches the stance, he passes his rope through it using the delicate handling hes learnt at a club or with professionals, before top-roping down. Single ropes have a diameter of between 9 and 11 mm and their fall test for approval is performed with an 80 kg mass. This sport which is ideally, and historically, performed outdoors can also be practised indoors on an artificial climbing wall.

Double rope symbol
Here we have quite a different terrain, that of mountains or long rocky routes. As with sports climbing, we can imagine what it would be like to scale the North Face of Les Droites (1000 m high) and to top-rope down. Youd need 1000 + 1000 + 5 m = 2005 m of rope. Problem : Such a rope would weigh about 130 kg and you can just imagine how cumbersome it would be to carry!!! Solution: For a long time, climbers have been conquering routes, be they glacial or rocky (or even both) using small lengths of around 50 m. These are routes of differing lengths on which the belay equipment is detachable and of uncertain resistance. Its the lead climber who on the ascent judges and installs his required safety equipment for fall protection. Once at the stance, he belays his second who collects the protection equipment installed along this length, allowing the roped party to contemplate one length and then another and so on.

TWIN ROPES
There is a third type of rope.
Twin ropes symbol
Developed as a lighter alternative to double ropes, they have a diameter of around 7.5 mm per strand, but their normal use requires 2 strands to be clipped into each belay point, which is incompatible with the need to separate carabiners on mountains for route or safety reasons.

Looking after your rope: - Try to prevent the rope from rubbing against sharp ridges and potentially abrasive or sharp rocks. - Dont walk on the rope. - Protect the rope from sand and dust by keeping it in a rope bag. - Avoid letting it come into contact with chemical agents or corrosive materials (dont store rope with oil or petrol in the boot of your car). - Protect the rope from UV rays and water as much as possible.
A simple and quick way of assessing rope yourself : Millet offers climbers a RECORD SHEET. The principle is simple: answer the questions on the SHEET, and the results obtained will tell you whether you need to maintain or scrap your rope. Model can be downloaded from www.millet-cordes.fr
124
CAUTION
- Water wont damage your rope, its drying that should be your main concern. After your rope has been used in a humid environment or after washing, it is essential to let it air in a dry place, protected from sunlight and frost and away from any source of heat. To help it dry properly, the rope should be unfolded and not bundled up and preferably hung.
The pros advice : When the rope feels fully dry to the touch, allow an extra 2 days of drying time. This is a considerable safety margin because insufficient drying may cause the rope to suffer quick, internal chemical deterioration. (Laurent Bouvet).
STORAGE : When it reaches that time of year when your climbing or mountain activity slows down, there are 2 simple rules to follow : - If youve washed your rope, dont immediately store it once its dry, but reuse it for one or two outings, it will dry further when used. - The storage place must be protected from sunlight, moisture, frost and any source of high heat. Leave the rope outside its bag during this time.
125
This material is insensitive to alkaline compounds and resistant to weak acids. CAUTION : Dissolves in carbolic acid and in formic acid solutions. CAUTION : Decomposes in contact with strong mineral acids. Diameter and weight : The CE standard measures diameter under 10 kg of tension. Therefore there is a big difference between the stated diameter and the perceived diameter when the rope is resting. Which is why reading rope weight is so much simpler and clearer! And whats even more important is the WEIGHT CARRIED ! When measuring weight per metre, the rope is also placed under a 10 kg load : 1 metre is measured, 2 marks are made, the load is removed, and the marked metre of rope is cut and weighed. Result : Ropes that stretch more have a more favourable weight per metre. But the real issue is the actual weight carried in your bag or pulled behind you when climbing, here the rope is not under a 10 kg load. For ropes of the same length, try comparing the actual weights using the same scales, Millets ropes rank lightest for ACTUAL WEIGHT.

Recycling and safety : a double benefit. Many ropes are used for far too long. This might be because someone takes up an activity again after a long break, gear is passed down generations, or a climber only does the activity occasionally. But there are potential hidden dangers to this: - Outdated technical characteristics. - Poor estimation of rope length (around of all climbing accidents are due to top-roping performed with ropes that are too short). By allowing users who take part in the Recycle Save initiative to make real savings, Millet also encourages them to question the reliability of their equipment and think about making a new qualitative purchase.
136
Recycle Save is a continuous polyamide collection operation combined with a short-period (1 April 31 July) used rope recovery service.

SLEEPING BAG
Extreme Temperature Goose down
Sarcophagus
149
Box trapzodales
Down quality is measured using two criteria : - The percentage of down/feathers. - The fill power which is the stated expansion.
Goose down
Down has two constraints : - It doesnt cope well with moisture, as wet down loses all of its expansion ability and clumps together in balls. - Down is sensitive to long-term compression, in other words you shouldnt store your sleeping bag compressed for a long time (from one season to the next for instance). All our down sleeping bags are supplied with a storage bag. Synthetics: A little less compressible than down, it is much cheaper and produces sleeping bags that have a good size / performance ratio. Synthetic sleeping bags deal well with water, which is why they are recommended for humid places or if frequent washing will be required.
150
Carrying: - If the sleeping bag is always in your backpack and youre looking for lightness, go for a down filled bag. - If the sleeping bag isnt always in your backpack and performance isnt the deciding factor, then synthetics is more appropriate.
151
8
Wet conditions : Opt for synthetics rather than down.
-11
Comfort : You can choose bags of varying sizes with inner fabric of varying softness. The label : - Above the comfort temperature rating : the user should not normally feel the cold. - Between the comfort temperature and the limit temperature rating : zone in which the user risks feeling cold. - Between the limit temperature and the extreme temperature rating : zone in which the users health might be in danger due to hypothermia.
