A at plate of 80 cm length, and uniform thickness 10 mm, tapers uniformly form 120 mm width to 60 mm. Find the elongation due to an axial pull of 70 kN if E = 200 GPa. Derive the formula used. [16] 2. A wagon of weight 25 k N, attached to a wire rope, is moving at speed of 4 km ph . The cross - sectional area of rope is 5 cm2 . Suddenly the rope jams and the wagon is brought to rest. If the length of the rope is 10 m at the time of sudden stoppage, nd the instantaneous stress and elongation of rope if E = 200 Gpa. & g = 9.8 m/sec2 . [16] 3. Establish the relation between S. F. & B.M. and rate of loading at a section of a beam. Obtain the maximum B. M. for the beam shown in Figure3 by drawing the S. F. D. Find the value of slope of the S. F. D . [16]

A cantilever of 4m span length carries a load 40 KN at its free end. If the deection at the free end is not to exceed 8mm, what must be the moment of inertia of the Cantilever section? [16] 7. Derive the expressions for hoop stress, longitudinal stress, change in diameter, length and capacity of the thin cylindrical shell, when subjected to an internal pressure. [16] 8. A thick cylinder having internal radius 200mm and external radius 300mm is subjected to 4N/mm2 . Find the internal pressure that can be applied if the max. permissible stress is 15N/mm2 . Find also the change in thickness of the cylinder. 1 [16] Take E = 200GN/m2 and m = 0.3

A steel rod 20 mm dia., passes centrally through a steel tube 30 mm internal dia. and 40 mm external dia. The tube is 80 cm long and is closed by rigid washers of negligible thickness which are fastened by nuts threaded on the rod. The nuts are tightened until the compressive load on the tube is 10kN. Find the stresses in the tube and the rod. Find the increase in stresses when one nut is tightened by quarter turn. There are 4 threads per cm. Take E = 200 GPa. [16] 2. Rails of 15 m length were laid on the track when the temperature was 200 C. A gap of 1.8 mm was kept between two consecutive rails. At what max temperature the rails will remain stress free ? If the temperature is raised further by 150 C, what will be the magnitude and nature of stresses induced in the rails? [16] 3. Construct the S. F. D & B. M. D for the simply supported beam shown in Figure 3 [16]

Determine the deection of the beam at the point of application of the 300 N.m couple as shown in Figure 6. Use E=2x105 N/sq.mm and I=200 cm4 . [16]

(b) Longitudinal stress and derive the expressions for the same in thin cylinders. [16] 8. A compound steel cylinder has a bore of 80 mm and an outside; diameter of 160 mm, the diameter at the common surface being 120 mm. Find the radial pressure at the common surface which must be provided by shrinkage if the resultant maximum hoop tension in the inner cylinder under a superimposed internal pressure of 60N/mm2 is to be half the value of the maximum hoop tension which would be produced in the inner cylinder if that cylinder alone were subjected to an internal pressure of 60N/mm2 . Determine the nal hoop tensions at the inner and outer surfaces of both cylinder under the internal pressure of 60N/mm2 and sketch a graph to show the hoop tension varies across the cylinder wall. [16]

If the drum is subjected to an internal pressure of 2.5 N/mm2 , determine (a) Hoop stress (b) Longitudinal stress (c) Change in diameter 1 of 2

8. A compound cylinder is formed by shrinking one tube on to another, the nal dimensions being, internal diameter 120 mm, external diameter 240 mm, diameter at junction 180 mm. if after shrinking on, the radial pressure at the common surface is 8N/mm2 , calculate the initial hoop stresses across the sections of the inner and outer tubes. If a uid under a pressure of 60N/mm2 , is admitted inside the compound cylinder, calculate the nal stresses set up in the sections of the pipes. [16]

A rectangular block of size 50 mm 100 mm 80 mm is subjected to the following axial loads. 500 kN (tensile) on 100 mm 80 mm faces 900 kN (tensile) on 500 mm 80 mm faces 1000kN (Compressive) on 500 mm 100 mm faces. Taking the poissons ratio as 0.3, nd the change in volume of the block. If E = 200GPa, nd the modulus of rigidity and the bulk modulus. [16]

A simply supported beam shown in the Figure 6 carries a uniformly distributed load of intensity w symmetrically distributed over part of its length. Determine the maximum deection and check your results by assuming a = 0 and compare, when same beam with u.d.l on entire span . [16]

7. A cylindrical shell 3m long has 1m. internal diameter and 15mm metal thickness. Calculate the circumferential and longitudinal stresses induced and nd out the changes in the dimensions of the shell , if it is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5 N/mm2 . Also nd out the maximum shear stress. Take E = 2 X 105 N/mm2 , = 0.3. [16]

8. A tube whose external and internal diameters are 360 mm and 240 mm respectively has another tube 60 mm thick shrunk on to it. The bore of the outer tube is machined to 1 mm less than the external diameter of the tube on to which it is subsequently shrunk. If the tubes are made of steel for which the value of E = 200KN/mm2 , Determine expressions for the radial and hoop stresses developed in the inner tube. [16]
