Lesson plan example Lesson plan: I will start the class by introducing myself and asking them to do the

same. My introduction: 5min I already did one exercise with you but since I will be your teacher for the next 45minutes I will properly introduce myself. My name is Ana. I am a 4th year student at the Faculty of Philosophy studying English and Comparative literature. I am here because I have to do my teaching practice. Board description: I wake up at 6 oclock I turn off my alarm clock immediately. I turn on the radio/light. I put on my shoes. Ask them if they know what these phrases are called? Ans. yes I would like to give up smoking Put the answers on the board: Aim: to explain by way of comparison the grammatical features of phrasal verbs Board description: The class will be over at 5 oclock No, I stay up late. I wake up at 6 oclock I turn off my alarm clock immediately. I turn on the radio/light. I put on my shoes I turn down the volume. Ask the students the question: How are the first 3 sentences different from the other 4 sentences? Explain: the last 4 sentences have an object. In most cases when a verbal phrase has an object it can be inserted between the verb and the particle. This is not always so if you are not sure put the objects after it. If the object is a pronoun like it or them it is placed between the verb and the particle. This is the case with these 4 phrasal verbs. I will write an example on the board: I turn off my alarm at 6 oclock/I turn my alarm off at 6 oclock/I turn IT off at 6 oclock. I will ask them to do the same for the other 3 sentences. Activity 8: 10min Aim : to introduce the possibility of a phrasal verb whose object, in the form of a noun or a pronoun, always follows it.

Task: ask the students the following question: do you know any phrasal verbs with the verb to look? Ans. look after, look forward to, look for Contextualize the phrasal verbs: Look after- you can look after a child/or baby-sit a child. Can we say look a child after/or look it after? Ans. no Summarize the grammatical features: There are 3 types of sentences: Type 1- no object, the verb and the particle are never separated Type 2- with an object, the verb and the particle can be separated if a word is a noun and must be separated if the word it a pronoun Type 3- with an object but the verb and the particle cannot be separated. Advise: if you are not sure listen to your instinct, repeat it to yourself and choose the answer that sound the bestin most cases what you think is right is actually the right answer. If they ask why type 2 and type 3 differ explain: if the particle is an adverb the noun can go between but if it is a preposition than it cannot. Also explain that this could be confusing because sometimes one particle can be both a preposition and an adverb. The easiest way to learn the rule is to memorize the phrasal verbs but in most cases the instinct helps! Activity 9: pg. 92 Aim: to check if they had understood the grammatical features explained and to remind them of the rules that will be illustrated in the sentences of the next activity.
