413- 415, see map on pg. 414) Although Trade in the Indian Ocean was not new, larger ships during the postclassical era improved commercial organization and improved the amount and value of trade in the Indian Ocean Basin. Dhows & Junks - Over time, mariners recognized the monsoon winds over the Indian Ocean and built larger ships - Indian, Persian, and Arab merchants favored the dhows - Average amt. of burden in 1000: one hundred tons - Average amt. of burden in 1500: four hundred tons - After the commercial expansion of the Song, the Chinese sailed Indian waters on junks, which could carry up to one thousand tons - As large ships came into use, sailors sailed across the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal - B/c it was impossible to sail the Indian Ocean roundtrip and merchants had to stay in different ports until the monsoon winds changed, they did their trading in stages Indian Ocean Trade 1) Merchants from Persia and Arabia 2) Merchants from S.E Asia and China traded goods at Cambay, Calicut or Quilon for goods to take back to the west w/ the winter monsoon their cargos for goods to ship east w/ the summer monsoon

Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and Jews all lived in Indian ports and interacted w/ people from all over the E. Hemisphere After the establishment of the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates (the 2 prominent caliphates in the Islamic world), trade in the IOB flourished - Arabs and Persians controlled trade from India to the west - During the Song dynasty, Chinese junks went to ports in E. Africa - Bay of Bengal & the seas around China Malay & Chinese ships were common Goods traded/Industries created 1) Cotton Industry There was a high demand for cotton, so India artisans built factories for the production of high-quality cotton textiles produced a demand for agricultural products, created jobs for lots of artisans and enabled consumers to import goods from other regions which specialized in other goods 2) Sugar Refineries, Leather Tanning, Stone carving, Carpet weaving 3) Iron/Steel Industries Produced high-carbon steel, which had lethal cutting edges produced a high demand for knives and swords 4) China Silk, Porcelain 5) S.E. Asia Spices S.W. Asia dates, horses, incense 6) E. Africa Gold, Ivory, Slaves
