The Importance of Research as Evidence in Nursing

1. Rewrite the definition of research in your own words, in terms that are meaningful to you: Research is a systematic search for facts. It is a process of looking for logical answers to the unknown and a continuous method of discovering rational answers.

2. List at least four ways that research may be used in nursing practice: a. It synthesizes the findings of others into coherent practice guidelines. b. It explores and describes the health phenomena that affect health. c. It finds solutions to existing or new health problems. d. It tests traditional approaches to patient care for continued relevance and effectiveness.

3. What is the goal of nursing research? To generate new knowledge that can be applied to improve nursing practice.

4. Describe two characteristics that are essential to assure the quality of nursing research: a. It is peer reviewed. It is objectively reviewed by a third party to assure quality. b. Replicated. Replication ensures that findings can be duplicated in different populations and at a different time.

5. Briefly describe the evolution of research in nursing. Why was the granting of institute status for the National Institute for Nursing Research a seminal point in the history of nursing research? The granting of institute status for the National Institute for Nursing Research is a seminal point in the history of nursing research because it put nursing research on a par with medical research and the other health sciences, ensuring financial support and national audience for disciplined inquiry in the field.

6. Describe the appropriate research role for your current and/or planned nursing educational level As a student, I serve on a research team. As part of a team, I learn skills needed to conduct a research while relying on the time and expertise of the whole member of the team. I can also be an informed consumer, because with the advancements in technology, I am able to find appropriate research studies, read them and evaluate their validity and use findings in practice. I also assist in data collection.

7. For each of the following research roles, identify appropriate activities for the nurse: Informed consumer: Find appropriate research studies, read them critically, evaluate their findings for validity and use the findings in practice. Research related activity: Be a member of a journal club (groups that meet periodically to critique one anothers research studies). Attending research presentations and discussing posters at conferences.

Assist with a systematic review: Develop research questions methodically, write inclusion criteria, conduct in-depth literature searches, and review results of many studies critically. Assist with data collection: Helping measure outcomes on subjects or personally participating as a subject. Serve on a research team: Participate on research in a collegial way, collaborating with others to achieve mutual good. Principal investigator: Produces research. Design and conduct their own research projects. Leads groups, manages projects and solicits organizational commitment.

8. Describe how nursing research differs from quality improvement activities in terms of: Goals / intent: The intent of quality improvement is to improve processes for the benefit of patients or customers within an organizational context. While research on the other hand has a broader intent, the goal is to benefit the profession of nursing and to make a contribution to the knowledge base for practice. Roles and risk for subjects: Often, patients who are the subjects of study for a quality improvement project are unaware they are even in a study. In a research project, subjects are clearly informed at the beginning of the project of the risks and benefits associated with participating in the study and they are allowed to withdraw their information anytime.

Outcomes: Outcomes of a quality improvement study are intended to benefit a specific clinical group and so are reviewed by formal committees and communicated internally to organizational audiences. Research findings are subjected to rigorous peer review by neutral, external reviewers, and findings are expected to stand up to replication.

9. Write a definition of evidence-based nursing practice. Identify the elements that make up the Triad of EBP. The use of best scientific evidence, integrated with clinical experience, and incorporating patient values and preferences in the practice of professional nursing care. The elements that make up the Triad of EBP are the rigorous evidence, clinical experience and patient preferences.

10. Identify at least one way that you can personally use nursing research in your practice or clinical setting. Research can help me ensure that the kind of care that I am giving to my clients are the care that are most appropriate for their condition after knowing their history through a detailed history taking. It would guide me to ensure that practices that I am rendering are based on evidences and facts rather than hearsays and tradition or culture.
