Retell Using the Concept Board Review position words by

pointing to the children in each picture and asking Where are the children in this picture? Elicit each location word from children. Then tell children you will retell the Concept Book. Display Concept Board 4, side 2 and the magnetic pieces. Hold up a magnetic piece and point to the first box on the Concept Board. Say The child goes over the bars. Continue the activity with the remaining words in the Concept Book. After there is a magnetic piece in each square, point to the first magnetic piece and ask Where is this child? Elicit from children that the child is over the bars. Repeat the question for the remaining magnetic pieces. Differentiating Instruction ESL/ELL Review position words using simple objects, such as blocks, a ruler, and a connecting cube. For example, make a bridge using two blocks and a ruler. Say Go over as you point to the bridge. Then help children move the cube over the bridge. Continue for all position words that appear in the Concept Book.

Leader. Ask Have you ever played the game Follow the Leader? Where did you play the game? Tell children that you will read a book that shows children playing Follow the Leader on a playground.

a
a. Read the Concept Book: Use only one copy of the Concept Book Over and Under. Read the title. Point to the top of the book and say top. Then ask a volunteer to point to the bottom of the book. Repeat for the front and back of the book. Then ask children Should I start reading at the front or back of the book? Ask a volunteer to point to the front of the book. As you read the story, emphasize the position words. Point out the pictures that support the words.

b
b. Reread the Concept Book: Read page 2 and ask Where does the boy want his friends to go? Elicit that he wants his friends to follow him to the playground. Use the Reading Strategy: Show me where to go when I get to the end of the line. Help children understand that after you finish reading one page, you move on to the next. Ask What should I read after I finish page 2? Have children point to the text on page 4 in their own copies. Continue reading pages 415 and ask What are the children doing? Emphasize the position words on each page. Turn to page 16. Ask Now who is going to lead? Who is going to follow?

c
c. Children Buddy Read: Page through the Concept Book with children, pausing on each page to discuss the location of the children in the picture. Say each position word as you point to the word on the page. Remind children of the language pattern in the Concept Book: Go [position word] the [name of playground equipment]. Prepare children for the shift in language pattern on pages 1011 by pointing to the word get and encouraging them to repeat the sentence after you. Then pair children. One child can read to another or buddies can read alternate pages.

d
d. Children Read Independently: Go over any position words that posed a problem during buddy reading. Remind children to look at the pictures for support in reading the position words. Then have children read Over and Under independently. Children will be successful because of the step-by-step scaffolding you have provided for independent reading success. Suggest that they listen to Audio-CD track 5 a few times before reading alone.

Ongoing Assessment Note the success with which children place the magnetic pieces on the Concept Board. If children have difficulty, then reread the sentence and show pictures from the Concept Book to help them place the piece correctly on the Concept Board. See also Reteach, page 93.

Comprehension Focus: Retell story events Reread Over and Under, encouraging children to chime in with the position words. Then distribute Master 37. Tell children they will retell the story using a puppet. Help them cut out the puppet and tape it to a craft stick to make a handle. Using the puppet, model how to follow the footprints to move it through the playground. Explain to children that they will position the puppet at each piece of playground equipment according to the instructions you give. Say Go over the bars. Then move the puppet over the bars. Ask children to repeat after you. Then give various positional commands from the Concept Book, in order, and have children follow them with the puppet. Tell children that the black footprints show where they should stop. Respond to the Concept Book Ask children to pantomime playing
on their favorite pieces of playground equipment. Then ask children to use position words to describe what they are doing.

Digital Curriculum

Destination solutions form part of a blended learning solution for schools, as they are fully aligned to the core HMH basal solutions for Math and Reading. Address individual student needs through adaptive, explicit and differentiated instruction with Destination Reading and Destination Math. This solution is proven effective in reaching all students and accelerating proficiency by incorporating strategies for Special Needs, English Language Learners, Academic Intervention, onlevel, below level, above level, and reluctant readers. Destination solutions are powered by a robust learning management platform that helps teachers plan for instruction and correlate student assignments to curriculum objectives, with support of progress monitoring with a pre-/post-assessment, and prescriptive instruction . Teachers can also review how well their students are doing with reports that can be aggregated by school, classroom, or individual learner.

Imagine a place where educators are joined in a common mission to ensure that every student learns to read well, loves to read, and sustains that passion for life. Why use The Iowa Tests for Your Testing Program

Excellent Measure of Academic Growth Robust, Flexible Reporting Options Identify Students at Risk Time-Tested, Rigorously Researched Content and Norms Multiple Parallel Forms with Valid and Reliable Items
Grades K-12

When it comes to reading, theres a story behind every student and each students story is different.
Life in the classroom would be a lot easier if every student learned at the same pace. But thats rarely the case. Thats why we developed the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests (GMRT). Teachers rely on these tests to get the real story behind every student, which enables teachers to give students the extra instructional guidance they need.

The Woodcock- Johnson lll NU Tests of Achievement and the parallel Spanish Batera lll Woodcock-Muoz NU are ideal for accurately screening students and diagnosing a level of limitation or at-risk performance from Kindergarten to graduate school levels. These tests are appropriate for measuring general intellectual ability, specific cognitive abilities, oral language, and academic achievement. Look to Riverside for support on all of your assessment needs!
