ASSIGNMENT: Conduct a surveyor study.

Present your findings to the class, and submit a

written report.

1) PROPOSAL (due Tuesday July 6th at the latest)

Decide what your group will investigate. Identify your research question(s) and design your procedure. Submit a detailed written proposal for approval.

(2) DO IT! (Data should be collected (July 31st) and analyzed by August 15/September 3rd)
Collect and analyze your data. Prepare handouts, transparencies, or posters for your presentation.

(3) CLASS PRSENTATION (Date will be announced later)

Tell us about your project. (Appropriate verbal, visual, and numerical descriptions)

(4) WRITTEN REPORT (Date will be announced later) 10 pages

Submit a written report, including: Original question Explanation of how you collected your data Visual, verbal, and numerical analysis Conclusion Also include an evaluation of how well your plan worked, with suggestions of how you could improve your methodology next time. GRADES will be based on your design, analysis, conclusions, presentation, report, and selfevaluation, as well as meeting deadlines, full group involvement, completeness, accuracy, clarity, and your use of proper statistical techniques and vocabulary. NOTE: You will find that planning and carrying out a good study are more difficult than you expect. Pick a manageable topic; try to do it well. Things will probably go wrong. Goal #1: apply the ideas we have studied so far this year: good design, exploratory data analysis, clear descriptions and sound analysis of results. Goal #2: learn from any mistakes or problems that arise. SOME IDEAS (or think up something else; get advice and approval before starting.) Do after school jobs or participation in sports affect grades? Can we predict height or weight from shoe size? Are smokers less likely to wear seatbelts? Which grocery store or drug store has the lowest prices? Do males get higher Math SAT or AMC scores than females? Do boys and girls enroll equally in advance math, science and computer courses? How much stronger is a persons dominant hand? Are lefties more coordinated with their right hands than righties are with their lefts? Can people tell the difference between national brands and store brands? Does mail arrive faster with zip codes? Are reaction times faster in males or females? Athletes or non athletes? Right or left hand? What is the trend in College cost? Birth rates?
