A Brief Definition of Communicative Language Teaching Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) was just an idea in 1960s and it was

accepted in 1970s in the UK. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) fosters communication through real life situations, and tasks and activities should be relevant to the students' needs .A communicative classroom should like a stage of rehearsing real life situations. In short, what happens in the language classroom should be similar to what happens in real life situations... Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a rejection of behaviorism and Audiolingual method because Audiolingual Method attends to structure and form more than meaning, demands memorization of structure-based dialogues.Language items are not necessarily contextualized, language learning is learning structure, sounds, or words. Drilling is a central technique. It demands native-like pronunciation and it avoids grammatical explanation. In Audiolingual method, communicative activities only come after a long process of rigid drills and exercises. The use of the students' native language and translation are forbidden. Reading and writing are deferred till speech is mastered. The target linguistic system will be learned through the over teaching of the patterns of the system and linguistic competence is the desired goal. Students are expected to interact with the language system, embodied in machines or controlled materials. Internal motivation will spring from an interest in the structure of the language. On the other hand, In Communicative Language Teaching Approach, meaning is paramount. Dialogues, if used, center around communicative functions and are not normally memorized. Contextualization is a basic premise. Language learning is learning to communicate. Effective communication and comprehensible pronunciation are sought. Any device that helps the learners is accepted-varying according to their age, interest, etc. Attempts to communicate may be encouraged from the very beginning. Judicious use of native language is accepted where feasible. Translation may be used where students need or benefit from it. Reading and writing can start from the first day, if desired. The target linguistic system will be learned best through the process of struggling to communicate. Communicative competence is the desired goal. Fluency and acceptable language is the primary goal: Accuracy is judged not in the abstract but in context. Students are expected to interact with other people, either in the flesh, through pair and group work, or in their writings. Internal motivation will spring from an interest in what is being communicated by the language. In short, we can say that Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is learnercentred,communication-oriented, meaning-focused, interest and needs based, and real life situated.

As a result, in Turkey, although the Communicative Language Teaching has many advantages, it is almost impossible to use it in an appropriate way in the classrooms. One of the most significant reasons why the teachers can not use it in their classrooms is that they have many students and they do not have enough time to apply for the CLT's advantages. The other important reason is

that the teachers must be very knowledgeable and they must arrange the classroom activities, make everything comprehensible for the learners, and they must keep context and comprehensibility in their planning, presentations because they are responsible for selecting and adapting authentic and meaningful materials for use in class. Under such circumstances, the teachers may have some difficulties and may apply for traditional teaching methods because the teachers are the ones who are doing everything in this approach.
