You see, if you look at the whole tractor issue from a marketing perspective, it would go something like this. People dont simply buy products (say a car), they are actually solving problems (transportation) or satisfying needs (escape from the missus). So if I look at the problem from this point of view ... I dont need a tractor!!! What I really need is a snow removal solution, a dirt digging solution and a dirt/gravel moving solution!!! Okay, I think Im on the right track here. When solving a problem as complex as this, it always helps to look around and fgure out what assets you have to work with!!! Lo and behold, one of my biggest assets is the ... WIFE!!!! A couple of shovels and I have a snow removal solution!! A pointy shovel and my dirt digging solution is solved!! Trow in a wheel barrow and dirt/gravel moving is a breeze!!! When you look at problems from the proper perspective the solutions become obvious, I dont need a new tractor, I need a new WIFE!! Now what specifcations do I need to look for?? Weight, height, temperament, fuel capacity, lifing ability, leg strength, ............ Oh!!Oh!! Somehow shopping for a wife could turn out to be a lot worse than shopping for a tractor!! And Im kind of guessing that a tractor just might be cheaper. Hey!! What if I shop for a tractor like I did for a wife!! Goof around for a bunch of years enjoying life, wait for desperation to set in, and take the frst one that I could fnd!!!!!!!!! Hold on!! Tat really isnt funny and certainly not true. Well alright ... I do fnd it funny but it still isnt true. I will probably never fnd a tractor as good as my dear wife. Actually, in tractor shopping, desperation did set in, snow was coming, and I didnt have a removal solution ready (the missus threw the ofered shovels much further than I thought possible). But thanks to the support of my dear wife, we should now be ready to face winter once again. 800 WesTides - December 6, 2011 3 www.ossekeag.ca MARCO POLO QUILTERS GUILD Te Marco Polo Quilters Guild welcomes all those interested in quilting whether they are beginners or experienced quilters. At the time it was built it was the second longest memorial wall in the province at 147 feet. On August 31 st , 2011 a signifcant restoration was undertaken by Alternative Concrete Technologies Ltd. Te reason that this project had to be done was time and neglect had taken its toll on the wall. Te project manager was Carl Nunes, a former student of Milford School. For many in our city quite the opposite is true. Christmas can be a lonely, meager time of year magnifed by the joy of others. Saint John endures a poverty rate well above the national level. Tere are those who struggle with mental illness or physical disabilities and those whose situation is exacerbated by addiction. Some of these individuals have little or no family support. For over 125 years the Salvation Army has been a very real presence here in Saint John caring for those most vulnerable in our society. Tis time of year we are acutely aware of how many charities ask for your donations but we challenge you to look at our track record; the 2010 Kettle Campaign not only helped almost 500 families have a wonderful Christmas, but assisted over 6000 individuals throughout the year. Te 2011 Kettle Campaign began on November 17 th at Center Court of Brunswick Square and will continue until noon on Christmas Eve. Please give generously when you see our kettles and allow us to pick out the gif for you this year. Bernadette has won a voucher to a local Subway for a foot long meal deal. 823 CHRISTMAS FIRE SAFETY TIPS To ensure a Merry Christmas and fire safe Holiday Season for everyone, the Saint John Fire Department suggests the following fire safety guidelines be observed. The Christmas Tree Get a freshly cut tree. It will stay green longer and be less of a fire hazard. Try to pick a tree with a strong green color and noticeable fragrance. Do not set your tree up near a heat source such as a radiator, television, fireplace, heating duct or sunny window. It should not block doors. Never use lighted candles on the tree. Remove the tree within 10 to 14 days. After that amount of time in a heated building, even the freshest tree can start to dry out. Choose decorations that are flame-retardant, non-combustible and non- conductive. If there are young children or pets in your home, avoid very small decorations. Avoid using angel hair (glass wool) together with spray-on snowflakes. This combination is highly combustible. Do not use metallic ornaments on the tree. If they make contact with defective wiring they could become a shock hazard. Lights Use Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certified light strings/sets. Use the proper lights for the environment. Indoor light strings/sets should not be used outdoors because they lack weatherproof connections. Some outdoor light strings/sets burn too hot indoors. Inspect light strings/set before use. Check for cracked bulbs and for frayed, broken or exposed wires, and discard if faulty. Turn off all tree and display lights before heading to bed or leaving the house. The Fireplace Never burn gift wrappings, boxes, cartons, or other types of packing in the fireplace. They burn too rapidly and generate far too much heat. Don't hang Christmas stockings from the mantel when the fireplace is in use. Always use a screen in front of the fireplace to protect against flying sparks. Never use gasoline or any other flammable liquids to start a fire. Use only seasoned and dried wood. Never leave the fire unattended or let it smolder. Clean the ashes regularly. Place the ashes in a metal container and store outside away from flammable materials. Don't use Christmas trees for firewood. Electrical Outlets There is often a tendency to overload wall outlets during the holiday season. This is an unsafe practice and should be avoided even for short durations. Insert plugs fully into outlets. Poor contact may cause overheating or shock. To avoid possible overheating, do not coil or bunch an extension cord which is in use and do not run it under carpets or rugs. Last but not least... make sure your smoke detectors work. One working smoke alarm is required on every level of your home. Have a Fire Safe Christmas from the Saint John Fire Department WesTides - December 6, 2011 16 www.ossekeag.ca ADULT LEARNING PROGRAM Improve your Math & English skills so you can: feel better about your skills; help your kids with homework; prepare to write the GED tests; prepare to take other training; fnd a job or a better job. Your BBB has been inundated with inquiries from Maritime consumers who have received a telephone call claiming that their computer contains a virus. Te caller informs the consumer that they work for Microsof, Windows, Macintosh, Secure Data Centre, etc and have detected a virus on their computer. Te caller then uses a number of diferent scenarios to scam the consumer: they may try to sell the consumer a fx for hundreds of dollars, they may ask for remote access to the computer so they can install sofware to fx the problem or they may refer the consumer to a website to download a fx, which may end up being an actual virus. Te end result is these scammers want the consumers credit card number or they want access to the consumers personal and/or fnancial information that may be stored on the computer. Te BBB suggests the following: Never give out your credit card number to any unknown person over the telephone; Never give remote access to your computer to any unknown person, no matter where they say they are calling from; If you suspect that there is a problem with your computer then take it to a local repair shop; Never agree to download anything from an unknown website; Make sure that all your frewalls are secure and that you have the latest versions of anti-spyware and anti- virus protection on your computer. Ossekeag Publishing Your Community Connection Your Community Connection Call 832-5613 Call 832-5613 JOy I came across an old photo recently of my daughter at age six, dancing in the pouring rain in October in a bathing suit. I had not seen the photo in many years (at least in part because my other daughter had liberated it from the photo album for a project a couple of years ago) but I remember the day so clearly I did not need to. It was an unseasonably warm October day that simply poured rain. Te girls put on their bathing suits and went out on the bricks in the back yard in water up to their ankles and danced and sang. Te photo has captured that expression of pure joy that no doubt was what so imprinted the day in my memory. As adults, we are so much more controlled than as kids. I think we have learned to reign in our delight for fear of sounding or appearing childish or foolish. Fear of what others will think of us can suck all of the joy out of life. It can be tough to step outside of our comfort zone and experiment a little. For some of us it gets tougher and tougher with each passing year, and for some others of us once we reach a certain age suddenly we can let go of that concern of what others think and do something just because we want to (the Red Hat Society being a prime example). Start small . . . a new hair colour (you can always change it tomorrow if you really hate it), an outft you would normally consider too bright (buy it second hand and you wont have too much invested in it), an activity you have never tried (zip lining - are you nuts!). Te best way to live life joyfully is to savor today. Enjoy whatever it is you are doing. Enjoy the people around you. Childlike is not childish. My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while its on your plate. ~ Tornton Wilder. 801 (Inc. Filters, Lights Etc.)
