Cadillac-area residents are in for a rare treat when the
International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers (IGSDB) host
an event here, from December 6th - 10th, at the Cadillac
Sands Resort. The company has identied this region as
prime territory for purchasing your precious metalsespecially
gold and silver. The IGSDB estimates that local residents have
millions of dollars worth of valuables that they no longer need
or want. That is where the IGSDB comes inthey specialize
in buying those items from local sellers in the U.S., Canada
and Europe.
Items like gold coins, scrap gold, sterling silver and tea
sets also diamond rings are in high demand right now, and
IGSDB is purchasing massive quantities of them on behalf of
their global network of collectors, dealers and reneries.
Currently on an international tour, IGSDB has included
Cadillac on its list of stops for this week. Residents are urged to
mark their calendar for this special opportunity to meet one-on-
one with gold, silver and diamond specialists.
Because of IGSDBs low overhead, extensive resources
and massive volume, the company is often able to pay out
more than other dealers and retailers. Many customers are
surprised at how much they are offered for seemingly small
amounts. I had two bent herringbone necklaces, a class ring,
and some outdated earrings that I brought to a show. I walked
out with $425 in less than 15 minutes, said a satised guest.
Providing an economic boost to each region it visits,
the IGSDB projects to pay out $350,000 at each eventa
testament to the high volume of items they purchase and the
prime prices being paid. Offers are made based on rarity,
numismatic value, condition and market value.
Company spokesman Matthew Enright says, We just
paid $4,700 for a loose 1.25carat diamond. Our mission
is to pay local residents on the spot for sterling silverware,
ne jewelry, coins and precious metalsespecially silver and
gold. The company has seen a huge inux of gold lately.
Customers have been scrambling to cash into the record-high
value of gold, adds Enright. For those who are unsure if their
items are genuine gold or silver, or simply costume, company
will test it for free. The best strategy is to bring all items to
the show for a free evaluation from our specialists. It always
amazes me how a small handful of gold and silver can turn
into hundreds of dollars in just a few moments. We test, weigh,
and buy items right on the spot, Enright says.
At a recent show, a smalltown dentist had a nice pay
day. I have been collecting dental gold for years from patients
who didnt want their extracted teeth. It really added up
my check is for over $31,000! While most people dont
have buckets of dental gold at their ngertips, they do have
$750 worth of scrap gold scattered throughout their homes or
mismatched earrings.
In addition to scrap gold, ne jewelry and diamonds,
coins are a big hit. Offers will be made on all coins dated
1970 and earliergold coins, silver, silver dollars, half dollars,
quarters, nickels and dimes. Enright explains, U.S. coins
made before 1970 are worth more than their legal tender
amount because they contain 90% silver. Rare dates and mint
marks can make them even more valuable. We recently paid
$78,000 for an amazing coin collection. One couple brought
in a rusty coffee can lled with silver coins, sawdust, and a
dead spider. The can had been in the basement for years. We
were happy to send them home with a check for more than
$700!
Cadillac-area residents should start collecting their
valuables now to bring to the free event, which runs Tuesday -
Saturday. Deals will be made and money will be paid on the
spot. Attendance is expected to be high, but no appointment
is needed. Enright encourages everyone to take advantage of
this special opportunity to meet directly with specialists from the
International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers. He concludes,
Its a great chance for people to cash in their old diamonds,
jewelry, coins and scrap gold. This is a sellers market, so dont
miss out!

DONT TREAD LIGHTLY ON
WINTER TIRE SAFETY
(NewsUSA) - With winter upon us, tire
safety in cold weather is something every
car owner should be familiar with. Most
drivers concentrate on tire safety in hot
weather to avoid blowouts, but the same
precautions should be exercised in the
winter. One of the most effective ways to
be safe on the road is to use a winter tire
specially designed for cold weather.
Common all-season tires contain a
tread compound that gradually hardens
when temperatures dip below 45 degrees,
resulting in a decrease in traction. These
tires also tend to collect winter road
debris, like snow and ice, which can
impact a vehicles performance on wintry
roads.
Mark Ballard, spokesman for Discount
Tire Company, Americas largest
independent tire and wheel retailer,
advises motorists to replace all four
tires with winter tires if they can expect
to encounter snow and ice during the
winter months. Its best to use winter
tires, especially if you live in an area
with extreme weather conditions where
temperatures are below 45 degrees on
a consistent basis, he explains. Relying
on an all-season tire to do the work of a
winter tire can be dangerous to you and
other motorists.
In recent years, the Rubber
Manufacturers Association (www.rma.
org) developed new standards for winter
traction, which led to technological
advancements in the manufacture of
winter tires. For example, a newer tread
compound featuring a higher sillica
content retains tire exibility even in
freezing temperatures, allowing the tread
to maintain its grip with the highway.
Also, tread block design has been
greatly improved with the addition of
thousands of sipes, small cuts in the
tread block that provide extra biting
edges for more traction.
Every aspect of todays winter tire
has been engineered to provide better
traction and greater ability to quickly
expel water, slush and snow, provide a
quieter ride and allow for longer tread
life, says Ballard.
Winter tires tend to be slightly more
expensive than all-season ones. But like
all tires, winter tires perform optimally
when properly inated. Remember that
a signicant drop in temperature can
lower air pressure. Typically, a 10-degree
drop will cause tires to lose a pound of
pressure.

5TH ANNUAL CHIPPEWA LAKE
POLAR PLUNGE SET FOR
FEB. 25
Organizers hope to raise $24,000 for
Special Olympics Michigan
From Staff Reports
CHIPPEWA LAKE Special
Olympics supporters are encouraging
the community to once again take the
plunge and join in the fth annual Area
5 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar
Plunge.
The frigid event will be at 12:30 p.m. on
Feb. 25 at Chippewa Lake. Registration
starts at 11 a.m. at East Bay General
Store, located at 19961 E. Chippewa
Drive, and an awards ceremony after
the plunge will start at 1:30 p.m. at
the Chippewa Township Community
Building.
Eighty people jumped into the icy
water last year, and the campaign raised
$23,000. This year, the goal is to add
another $1,000 to that total, said Patricia
Rosales, director of Special Olympics
Michigan in Area 5 Mecosta and
Osceola counties.
The money all comes back into our
program, and pays for our annual sports
programs, equipment and competitions,
she said.
Participants are encouraged to register
online in advance, although registration
also will be available the day of the event.
The cost is $75, and all participants get
a T-shirt. For those not brave enough to
jump, Too chicken to plunge T-shirts will
be available for $10.
But simply lining up to jump into the
lake through a hole cut in the ice is
not enough; the Polar Plunge also is a
costume contest.
Golden Plunger Awards are given for
best costume, the individual who raises
the most money and the team that raises
the most money. Other certicates will
be awarded to the oldest and youngest
plunger, plus other fun categories,
Rosales said.
Were looking to get more involvement
with law enforcement personnel in the
area, she said. We just want to see more
people out there. Thatd be wonderful.
Businesses who would like to sponsor
the event and have their logos included on
the T-shirts can make a $500 donation.
For more information or to sign up, visit
www.somi.org and click on polar plunge
under the fundraisers tab. A link to the
Chippewa Lake Polar Plunge is listed;
participants can sign up from there.
Additional questions can be directed to

MORTON TOWNSHIP LIBRARY
RECEIVES GRANT TO UPGRADE
SYSTEMS
From Staff Reports
MORTON TWP. Though the Morton
Township Public Library is not set to
reopen until May after undergoing a $2.7
million expansion and renovation, it was
recently awarded a grant to help upgrade
and streamline its circulation software.
Morton Township Public Library is one
of more than 60 libraries in the state that
use VERSO circulation system software
to check books in and out of the library.
Currently, VERSO libraries that provide
interlibrary loan services through the
Michigan Electronic Library Catalog
the statewide service that allows for
the borrowing and sharing of materials
among Michigan libraries for library
patrons must access both VERSO
and MeLCat in order to check materials
in and out. The dual systems created
a redundancy lowering efciency at
libraries, said Kate Van Auken, director of
the Rawson Memorial District Library in
Cass City who helped apply for the grant.
To eliminate the redundancy, custom
programming needs to be created, which
the grant will help pay for and then share
with the other libraries.
The whole reason why (the grant
process) started was to put all the (library)
items into one big pot and members can
go in and acceses them easily, Van
Auken said. Its just a way to do a special
program so our software plays with their
software a little bit easier.
Mimi Herrington, director at Bad Axe
Area District Library in Bad Axe, applied
for the grant with Van Auken. The joint
grant application awarded $25,000 from
the Robert C. Reinhardt Library Fund to
the Michigan libraries.
The specialized programming needed
to eliminate the redundancy is estimated
to cost $30,000 in development fees.
Herrington and Van Auken pursued the
grant on behalf of all Michigan VERSO
libraries. Without the grant, each library
would have had to pay nearly $500,
an amount many rural libraries cannot
afford. Splitting the remaining $5,000,
approximately $80 per library, is much
more managable, Van Auken said.
Once Morton Township Public Librarys
renovated facility opens, the programming
will add to the technology upgrade in the
library and increase staff productivity,
said director Mary Ann Lenon.
Its going to require less staff time,
because we were having volunteers work
on a seperate computer and software,
Lenon said. Now this is going to be done
right into our circulation. It will be a lot
less steps.
NETWORKING IN THE SOCIAL
SPHERE BUILDS STRONG
CAREER CONNECTIONS

(NewsUSA) - A strong network is a
key building block for career success.
Whether youre looking for a new job or
connecting with peers in your industry,
building a strong set of connections to
help advance your career is vital.
While older generations used to build
their networks one handshake at a time,
todays networkers foster and maintain
connections online through the use of
social media tools.
Whether youre a social media novice
or acionado, it is important to remember
that unlike connections made through
face-to-face contact, when building an
online network, credibility is assessed via
digital proles.
Its essential for professionals
to understand that digital tools like
LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter allow
our professional and personal worlds to
blend, says Jason Seiden, co-founder
of Ajax Social Media and a member of
the Career Advisory Board, presented
by DeVry University. You must learn to
bring the edges in and ensure your online
prole exudes both elements effectively,
without misrepresenting either.
Building or revising your digital prole
may seem daunting, but there are simple
ways to bolster it to showcase what you
have to offer, helping you connect to the
right people more quickly.
For those feeling unsure where to
begin, Seiden offers actionable advice for
building a strong digital prole to position
oneself for online networking success.
Build a prole that stands out.
Distinguish yourself by telling your
story. Have your prole reect more about
who you are and what you have learned
rather than what you have done. Think of
your prole as a mirror: instead of trying
to sound professional, give yourself
permission to reect who you are.
If your reection shows gaps relative
to the demands of positions you are
applying for, consider acquiring the skills
or enrolling in degree programs needed
to qualify. DeVry University is a great
choice for professionals interested in
increasing their marketability because
it offers exible scheduling options,
allowing students to take online courses,
classes on campus or a combination of
both, says Seiden. Having the ability to
complete your education while balancing
job and family commitments can ease
stress as you create a blueprint for
advancing your career.
Build the well before youre thirsty.
Even online, building a strong
network takes time, effort and continual
maintenance.
As you begin reaching out to industry
contacts, dont be too eager to connect.
Be cognizant of whom you are contacting
and how they can help you as you
advance your career.
While its easy to get caught up in your
online networks, traditional relationships
are still important. Seiden advises, Take
your relationships ofine. Pick up the
phone or meet face-to-face. Simple
tactics like these are the key to lasting,
mutually benecial connections. By
fostering strong relationships ahead of
time, you will have the condence to
reach out in the future to take your career
to the next level.

additional social networking tips, visit

REBUILDING YOUR CAREER
TOOLKIT TO MEET THE NEEDS
OF EMPLOYERS
(NewsUSA) - Despite an uncertain job
market, many job seekers would like to
believe they are qualied. However, it
simply is not the case. Candidates are
failing at the job search because they
lack the qualications that employers
value.
A national online survey conducted by
the Career Advisory Board established by
DeVry University brings to light how job
seekers can better position themselves
by focusing on the attributes employers
value most. The ndings of the Job
Preparedness Indicator conducted Sept.
6-12, 2011 by Harris Interactive revealed
that employers are unable to nd qualied
candidates for open positions.

In fact, only 14 percent of the 540 hiring
managers surveyed said that within the
past three years nearly all or most job
seekers have had the skills their company
looks for in a potential employee.
However, most job seekers believe
they have what it takes to succeed. More
than half (56 percent) of the 734 adults
looking for work who were surveyed are
condent they know what qualications
are required for employment. In addition,
72 percent are condent they know how
to present their skills during an interview.
These ndings highlight the striking
gap between what skills hiring managers
value in a candidate and how job seekers
describe themselves. But some of the
disconnect between hiring managers
and job seekers is due to misconceptions
about what is most important to the other
party, notes Dan Kasun, senior director
of developer and platform evangelism
at Microsoft Corporation and Career
Advisory Board member. Job seekers
should utilize these ndings to better
calibrate the way they present themselves
to employers.
According to the study, hiring managers
place the highest value on the following
skills across all job levels (entry, middle
and managerial):
1. Strategic perspective
2. High integrity
3. Global outlook
4. Strong base work ethic/dependable
5. Accountability
For those looking to enhance their
marketability to employers, Career
Advisory Board members offer the
following actionable advice:
1. Stay Current to Remain Relevant
Job seekers must commit to being
continuous learners to stay current
in the career game and enhance their
global outlook. Subscribing to industry
publications and becoming active
in professional organizations help
candidates stay abreast of issues and
trends and gain perspective on local,
national and global levels.
2. Gain Real-World Experience
Job seekers should pursue internship
and volunteer opportunities. These
experiences allow job seekers to pick up
relevant skills that can be transferred to the
workplace. Internships and volunteering
also offer valuable opportunities to
develop critical and analytical thinking
skills.
3. Seek a Mentor and Be a Mentor
Building a strong relationship with a
mentor can help job seekers gain critical
workplace knowledge that will support
career growth in their eld. Through
mentoring relationships, job seekers have
a window into a realistic career path and
what it takes to succeed in their career of
choice. To learn more about the Career
Advisory Board or the Job Preparedness
Indicator, visit careeradvisoryboard.com.
TOP THEME PARTY TIPS FOR 2012
(NewsUSA) - Lets face it. Theme
parties are a blast. They can turn any
combination of coworkers, family and
friends into an enthusiastic crowd
admiring creative decorations and
inventive outts. The best part? Party
themes can be as far-fetched, classy or
outrageous as you like.
Event planning experts suggest
going beyond holidays and committing
to themes with some integrity. After all,
these party themes must be worthy of
belonging to the apocalyptic 2012.
All celebrations can gain an
unforgettable air or stylish elegance by
adhering to a theme for key elements --
specically cocktails, music and decor.
From birthday parties and anniversaries
to baby showers and engagement
parties, themes can be specic or broad,
but they can also be pricey.
Since we dont all have access to
the deep pockets necessary to afford
celebrity planners like Mindy Weiss or
David Tutera, here are some creative
tips to help select the ideal 2012 party
theme.
* Go green. If your veins bleed green
instead of red, plan an eco-friendly party.
Decorate with luxuriant house plants
and natural colors. Spend money on
compostable paper materials, and save
by making it a pot-luck event. Challenge
your guests by urging them to only bring
things they made themselves, whether
its a dish, beverage or gift.
* Tap into doomsday fears. Optimize
on the end-of-the-world hype and throw
a wicked bash with a Goth theme.
Keep an upbeat mood with punk rock
favorites from the Night of the Demons
soundtrack. The horror lm from Seven
Arts combined tunes from Zombie Girl
and Creature Feature for a scarily popular
soundtrack available for download on
iTunes.
* Recreate your current TV obsession.
If youre gearing up for the season
ve premiere of Mad Men, turn your
party into a sophisticated 1960s event
complete with Old Fashions, Tom
Collins and classic hits from artists like
Ray Charles. Other shows like Glee,
Grimm or Dexter would provide lots of
entertaining costume ideas for guests.
* Commemorate a favorite decade.
Whether its the 70s, 80s or 90s that has
your friends reminiscing, combine all
your beloved elements of the decade for
a memorable celebration. From music to
food to clothing, your party can mimic the
times. For cheap decor, see what dusty
gems are lying in your attic.
