When you think of a luxury gift, what could be more luxurious, and potentially more surprising, than a new car? While the week before Christmas is the busiest time for a lot of businesses, the week after is usually the busiest week of the year for Turner Volvo. People always ask you when is the right time to buy a car and you hear different things, said Casey Turner,
general manager of Turner Volvo in Sacramento. I would say nowadays its perpetually a good time to buy a car because interest rates are so very low. According to Turner, the car population is the oldest it has ever been. The average vehicle is 10 years old right now, Turner said. Everybodys fixing, repairing, and now were seeing that theyre just getting to a point where its much better to purchase a new one or a certified pre-owned
car. One interesting possibility for a Christmas gift combines both travel and a new car. It is Volvos Overseas Delivery Program, a vacation where the car of your dreams is the souvenir and part of an unforgettable experience per the Volvo website. People order a car to their exact specs and then they get to go on a trip to Europe, Turner said. Basically, Volvo pays for air fare and you get a night in a hotel in Sweden and a tour of the factory. Its been a popular choice for many people this year due to the short supply of inventory. Casey Turner is the third generation in the Turner Volvo line. His grandfather Gordon Turner founded the dealership, and his father Patrick Turner is the dealer principal. They brought the jersey in, her field hockey stick and some of the awards that she had won and a photograph of the girl in her uniform, Anton said. We put that all in one big collage and (they) gave her that for Christmas. Granite Galleries has also framed a guitar signed by one of the Eagles.
We encased the guitar in a shadowbox frame, Anton said. We created a door on it so they could open it up and play the guitar still if they wanted to. With more than 4,000 frame samples, and the Antons creativity, there are a lot of choices. ho doesnt love cookies at Christmas? Like Donner and Dixon, trees and tinsel, Christmas and cookies just go together to make the holidays happier and our tummies fuller. Its a joy to receive a sampling of sweets from the neighbors or even bake up batches from your familys favorite recipes. Theres a sense of satisfaction when you can say, I baked these myself. But have you ever had problems with cookies burning on
the bottoms or around the edges? What about chocolate chip cookies that spread so much as they bake that they turn out as flat as a you know what? Kelli Ridenour, owner of Kellis Best Cookies in Roseville, has not one, but four secrets to creating perfect cookies. And shes willing to share. Thats a wonderful holiday gift from her to our readers and bakers. Here are her tips:
1. Lower the oven temperature by about 50 degrees.

2. Dont use egg yolks, only the egg whites.

Thats a little bit healthier, she said. Egg yolks can cause cookies to be dry and crunchy; using only egg whites results in fluffier, cake-like cookies. Ridenour cracks hundreds of eggs a day and is willing to give away all those unused yolks.
3. Stick with butter.
ingredients that you cant pronounce, Ridenour said. And if you cant pronounce it, dont use it. Margarine has other ingredients like water that will cause the cookies to spread. Margarine also has an after taste while butter helps the cookies taste better and stay fresh longer, she said.
4. Dont over mix.
Fold in the dry ingredients and mix just enough to blend. Ridenour cautions against using the high speed on the mixer and over beating.

A breakfast cookie is made with Kashi cereal, walnuts, dried cranberries and protein powder. The newest are glutenfree cookies. Ridenours favorite Im not a fan of pumpkin pie, but I love our pumpkin cookies, she said. They taste more like the top of a pumpkin muffin. Theyre made with pecans and chunks of white chocolate and are so popular that Ridenour says she cant keep them on the shelf. The best-selling cookies are chocolate chunk, made with chopped milk chocolate. Another favorite is snickerdoodles topped with cinnamon and sugar. Cream of tartar gives them a buttermilk taste.

ecember can be distracting with its flurry of shopping trips and parties. Despite the added hassle of setting an alarm system or putting valuables out of easy view, home security measures should rise to the top of the list, now especially. The Placer County Sheriffs Department and area security companies offer tips for residents of Granite Bay. Granite Bay has been hard hit recently with residential burglaries and mostly vehicle burglaries, said Dena Erwin, public information officer for the Placer County Sheriffs Department. If theres one thing people take away its locking your cars and locking your homes. Even when residents are at home, she said they should be vigilant about shutting their garage doors. The reputation of Granite Bay is that theres money so thieves think theres better stuff to steal, Erwin said. Garrett Thomas is CEO of Guardian Protection Force, a Sacramento company that provides personal security and executive protection. He listed several simple safety measures for improving the likelihood that a burglar will pass to the next house on the block. When they make their first contact in the front of your home, thats when theyre most vulnerable because thats when people see them, Thomas said. A front-yard fence and lock on the back gate make burglars work harder to gain access to the home. Motion-detecting lights also act as deterrents. To increase the chances that neighbors notice someone try-

He and his business partner Victoria Butler have 30 years of combined experience working for larger alarm companies such as Protection One and ADT. Dont wait until you become a victim to call us, Sala said, during an interview after a

any people will count puppies among their holiday gifts this year, triggering a 10-15 year relationship. Like many relationships, the bond between pet and owner begins immediately and the first few weeks and months are crucial to forging a healthy, happy relationship. Every breed has unique characteristics and every dog has its own personality. But there are a few things you can expect from every puppy: they will relieve themselves often and indiscriminately and they will chew. Preparing your home in advance of the puppys arrival can minimize the frustrations associated with those behaviors. One of the keys to raising a puppy is making sure the dog has its own safe, dedicated space inside and outside your home. Indoors, rather than giving the pup free reign we recommend providing an exercise pen and a crate for managing the pups behavior. But that doesnt mean separating the pup from your family. On the contrary, we recommend having the pup in a pen when you can keep a watchful eye on it. That way, the pup feels like its part of the family without being able to destroy anything. When you cant be watching the pup, it should be kept in its crate. Thats also where the puppy will sleep, whether or not you choose to have the crate in your bedroom. At bedtime, the crate can be moved into your bedroom. Healthy, well adjusted dogs need time both indoors and outdoors. When outdoors, the pup should be kept in a dedicated exercise area. The grass will likely be ruined and the pup will get filthy. Better options include decomposed granite or synthetic turf. The exercise area should include shelter from the weather - shade in the summer and an escape from the rain and cold in winter. There are a wide variety of prefabricated dog houses on the market; one of our favorites is the Dogloo. Another fact of puppy life is chewing. They will chew almost anything - and everything - if given the opportunity. The best solution is to provide the pup with plenty of high quality toys that can
be chewed safely. Avoid the temptation to give your pup an old shoe or sock. They have no way of discriminating between an ancient pair of Converse and a brand new pair of Manolo Blahniks. Also avoid flimsy rubber toys or used water bottles. They can easily be chewed into small pieces and get lodged in the puppys throat. Stick with any of the wide variety of hard plastic toys on the market, such as Nyla-bones or Kong toys. To reach the Dog Guy call 916 439-7202

Theres power in numbers. If Im the only one thats security conscious on my block, then its not going to do me any good if my neighbors arent as well.
Garrett Thomas, CEO of Guardian Protection Force
Thomas said Neighborhood Watch is another method for preventing crime. The signs hold weight when neighbors make the point of discussing security concerns
amongst each other regularly. When they notice suspicious individuals, neighbors should jot down physical descriptions, license plate numbers, and car makes and
models, and forward them to law enforcement. Theres power in numbers, Thomas said. If Im the only one thats security conscious on my block, then its not going to do me any good if my neighbors arent as well. Erwin highlighted security precautions that are particularly relevant around the holidays. She said shoppers should drop packages off at home rather than stockpiling them in cars. After opening gifts, families should be careful about putting cardboard boxes out for garbage pick-up that will advertise new items, such as electronics. You kind of have to be paranoid to avoid crime these days, she added.

ne local business is offering an alternative for drivers to consider how they may want to get around this holiday season. Michael Dumke, owner of Driver Please, has created a business that offers personal drivers to take clients wherever they wish to go in their own car. Were basically a transportation company with a unique twist, Dumke said. Our core business is providing personal drivers for people. Drivers for the Rosevillebased business, which has been operating for eight months, are meticulously screened through background checks, personal interviews and reference checks. We spend a lot effort getting high-quality drivers, Dumke said. Thats really our focus in the business. Client David Marsh, of Granite Bay, has used the service twice recently and said he wishes he had been aware of the business earlier. It fills an important hole in the market, Marsh said. It is a very cost-effective way of getting to and from the airport, and it provides a much more convenient and personalized service. Also a real estate investor, Dumke said the business model wasnt something that he was looking for exactly, but rather, one which found him. When he lived in the Bay Area, he hired a driver to take him to and from various social events to avoid the risk of drinking and driving. He said when he moved to the Roseville area eight years ago, he immediately missed that driver, so he advertised on Craigslist, sorted through a slew of resumes and background checks and eventually found one. I found someone up here,
Michael Parker, left, and Mike Dumke are the director of operations and the founder of Driver Please, a company dedicated to getting people from point A to point B safely in the clients own vehicle.

but it was hard to do it on my own, he said. When many of his friends began requesting and using his driver as well, Dumke said that was when he realized it could turn into a profitable business.
So how does it work? Customers can sign up to become a member of the service either online or over the telephone, Dumke said. Annual fees to become a member are $29, with the first 30 days free. Once signed up, customers can reserve a driver and pay a flat rate of $24.95 per hour, no matter what the distance. The company also gives senior discounts, which brings the hourly rate to below $20. Its a whole lot cheaper than a limousine, he said. From the taxi cab side of things, it depends of course on where you are going. Dumke said the service is

convenient, since customers are dropped off and picked up at the destination of their choosing, eliminating parking hassles. Our drivers are at the clients service, he said. They are always in touch with the client.
After they are dropped off, the driver will typically go find a nearby Starbucks or something like that. Currently, Dumke has about 20 drivers working for him, most of whom are spread throughout the greater Sacramento region, which broadens the scope of the business. Given that during the holiday season, the California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies tend to increase DUI saturation patrols, Dumke says his service is an effective way to prevent drinking and driving. Its a pretty wise decision to avoid that whole situation and just hire a driver, Dumke said.

heres something different going on at the Flower Farm in Loomis. If its been a while since youve visited, its time to take another look. Established in 1898, the farm has been a virtual cornucopia of activity over the years a sheep farm, a plum orchard, a cattle ranch. Today the property consists of 10 acres that include a plant nursery, coffee house, bed and breakfast and events center. Hints of fragrant fall and winter smells fill the chilled air a combination of wood smoke, earthy-smelling vegetation, and a whiff of something that could be apples, maybe cinnamon definitely something good to eat. But its the coffee house that has recently been reintroduced as a gathering place for locals and folks just passing through whether by car, bicycle or on foot. Its still a very welcoming home-town caf, said Annie Bowler, the propertys owner. Its run by the people who own Tsudas caf and bakery, a popular restaurant in Old Town Auburn. They are restaurateurs, so there is an emphasis placed on a variety of foods. Flower Farm Caf favorites include a variety of coffees, quiches and homemade pies with crusts that rival that of moms. The caf is brimming with classic Christmas fare, like house-made soups and seasonal heritage breakfast and lunch choices, Bowler said of the caf that is in a holiday mood. Flower Farm regular Patricia Burgess likes the cafs new offerings. Now that Tsudas is running the caf, there is a much larger selection of delicious pastries, both gluten-free and regular. The salads and sandwiches are fresh, well-presented and fill-

ing, she said. The caf will offer their annual flakey-crust pies and decadent chocolate beet cake as pre-orders for visitors holiday tables. In addition to tasty fare, December is a special time at Flower Farm a time for families to gather and celebrate the season together. The nursery mill house will be packed with locally produced artwork and Santa will visit every weekend, Bowler said. Families can take the childrens photos with Santa, free of charge. From the towering Christmas tree in the Flower Farm Barn (events barn), to twinkling white lights that surround the property in holiday cheer, the mood has never been more festive. The nursery gift shop is
brimming with unique and affordable gift possibilities for everyone on your list, Bowler said. Items include handcrafted Christmas ornaments, wall art, jewelry, textiles and more. Bags of delicious tree-ripened Placer Grown mandarins are also available. But what Bowler loves most

about holidays at the farm is that visitors enjoy the rural atmosphere. They gather chicken eggs and cut their own flowers. Its a welcoming place to be, she said. This year the farm will offer live Christmas trees for sale, and Bowler hopes to partner with a nonprofit to offer cut trees in 2012. In addition to handcrafted gifts and visits with Santa, the farm will host a tamale building party on Dec. 7. Bowler encourages families to attend the annual tradition that will teach the art of tamale creation, including a variety of savory and sweet fillings. These little food presents will have a hard time making it further than your freezer, Bowler said. We will have live music, dancing, spirits and surprises.

Cricket Ogren, owner of The Clay Corner, said while New York Mellon had property managers who did a satisfactory job of managing the center, it remained largely under the radar because of a lack of advertising. I think it was really awful and sad that the original owner lost it, Ogren said. But I think it will be a big difference to have a local owner. I think they will have more of a stake in it. Sovy Medved, owner of Pullman Kitchen and Catering at Quarry Ponds, said she feels much more secure in her business now that new owners have taken over from the bank. We are very fortunate to have both of them local and care about this place, Medved said. They seem to care so much about this property. They want all of us to be successful.
Tony Cardoso said he plans to create a more family-friendly environment at the center by bringing in a variety of new businesses to fill the vacant spaces that offer something for everybody. He also said he hopes to garner public support in petitioning the California Highway Patrol and Placer County to lower speed limits on Douglas Boulevard to improve the safety for those coming and going from the shopping center. Granite Bay is a relatively small and tight-knit community, Cardoso said. I think with this high traffic speed, it takes away from some of that. Ultimately it comes down to safety. The Cardosos say their ultimate goal is to provide affordable rents to their tenants, to create positive synergy in the center and to do what they can to make the center thrive so that all are successful in the end. It was the previous owners dream to have a market like this, Sue Cardoso said. So we are going to try and keep it going and see if we can make it work.

Source Global Tapas in Granite Bay turned one year old last month, and the restaurant, whose name reflects chef and owner Irie Genglers commitment to seeking out fresh, local ingredients, celebrated the milestone with its customers. The restaurant arguably sits on the forefront of a culinary movement, dubbed the Slow Food Movement, in which chefs and home cooks alike are seeking sustainable, locallyproduced products whenever possible. We are probably in one of the most fortunate areas of California, said Source general manager Tony Guerrero. Being here in the Sacramento valley, this is the heartland, where all these great vegetables and produce are grown. On a recent visit, I had the pleasure of experiencing and tasting that concept first hand. My visit was on a Wednesday, which also happened to be paella night, with live Latin music and generous portions of Valencia paella served fresh and hot. Genglers version of Valencia paella, a traditional Spanish rice dish cooked for two hours in a 3-foot pan, is made up of smoked chicken chorizo, mussels, prawns, onions, tomatoes, peas, peppers, parsley and lemon. Each Wednesday night, customers can pay $20 for the paella, which is made on-site and served with house-made sangria or any draft beer of choice. Server Kurtis Reece explained this at the table as he

also suggested that the best way to experience Source is to try two or three different small plates at a time, to get the most of the tastes and flavors the restaurant has to offer. Server Jenifer Kipgen also visited the table and informed us that with each glass or bottle of wine comes a complimentary mini tapa, after which my date and I replied, Yes please! White wine was served with a Medjool date stuffed with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale cream cheese spiked with ginger and
dusted with coriander, and red wine was served with a sausage duo of smoked chorizo and teriyaki. After the complimentary tapas, Reece suggested we begin the meal with fresh Ecuadorian shrimp and ginger cream cheese on a baguette, bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with cheese and baked brie wrapped with prosciutto and figs. Again, we replied, Yes, please!
For the next course, we ordered the crab tater tots, made up of fresh Dungeness crab coated with Panko bread crumbs, fried and finished with a mandarin Thai chili sauce. By the time we got around to the paella, we were hoping we would still have room for dessert after going on such a flavorful flight. Of course, we had to order the house-made toffee, which did not disappoint. After our dinner, Guerrero sat down with us for a brief discussion of the meal, the concept of the restaurant and his longtime friend, chef Gengler. The concept of global tapas expands traditional Spanish tapas-style, or small plate, dining with a menu that reaches beyond the realm of Mediterranean-influenced cuisine, Guerrero explained. Tapas dining is all about sharing the plates, Guerrero said. Getting a taste of this, a taste of that, everybody chiming in on what they think of the dish, what stands out the most, what they liked. Guerrero said Gengler and his wife have been dining that way for years, going from one restaurant to another and ordering different appetizers here and there. It is a relatively new concept in popular dining culture, one which is promoting the social aspect of eating, and one which is catching on quickly. The restaurant is as modest as it is casual, blending sophisticated, one-of-a-kind dcor and artwork with an open dining room and outdoor patio that matches the social character of its menu. Here, you can have as good of a meal as in any fine dining restaurant, Guerrero said, But in a much more casual, relaxed atmosphere, without being committed to an entre that is going to cost you $30 or more.

hen holiday lights burn bright, its time to get the party started. With Christmas and New Years Eve upon us, tis the season for entertaining, and Granite Bays own wine and spirits specialists offer advice for all your fun-filled festivities. Honestly, this is the least we can do as a community. Victor and all the others deserve this remembrance.
2008 began the tradition of decorating Douglas Boulevard, a tradition that continues today. Every week before Thanksgiving this group of supporters consisting of parents of military sons and daughters clothe themselves in Caltrans reflective orange vests and grab flashlights and a bag of yellow ribbons and tie what seems like hundreds of yellow ribbons around trees along nearly four miles of Douglas Boulevard. The ribbons remain up through New Years Day.
The ribbons serve as a symbol of remembrance to honor all of the military people who are here for the holidays, all of them who are returning home for good, and the ones who cant come home at all. This all began back in 2008 and it continues onward. In fact the project has earned the support of Placer County. This is a great project, and Placer County is pleased to support it, said Placer County Supervisor Kirk Uhler, Granite Bays representative on the Placer County Board of Super-
visors. The holiday spirit will burn a little more brightly in all of us as we travel along Douglas over the holidays thanks to the hard work of these military supporters. As we enjoy our families and friends during the holidays, I think it is important to remember that there are many young men and women who wont have that opportunity because of their service to our country and to our communities. Last year, Granite Bay lost a young U.S. Marine man who lived in our community. His name was Victor Dew and his parents have become good friends of mine. They still reside near the high school. We speak weekly and I know what these ribbons mean to them. It means we have not forgotten their sons sacrifice. It means love and remembrance. Victor
sacrificed his life for us. Honestly, this is the least we can do as a community. Victor and all the others deserve this remembrance. Lets never forget how blessed of a nation we really are. This year I ask you to begin a tradition with us. Take out a yellow ribbon and tie it around your tree. Tie a yellow ribbon to symbolize your commitment to honoring Americas military who are proudly serving around the globe, their families, those who are missing in action, and those who have fallen. I guarantee this seemingly small symbolic ribbon will make you feel proud. Freedom is not free! Merry Christmas Granite Bay and Happy New Year!

hile were used to paying insurance for things that we hope never are required, life insurance seems to be the most disliked. With car, homeowners, health, and other kinds of insurance, the insured is sure to reap the benefits. With life insurance one is more apt to think, Ill be gone anyway, as long as my family is taken care of Well think again. There are many types of insurance out there, all with different uses. Temporary insurance or what it called Term Life, is for a specific time period and can be significantly cheaper than permanent life. Not to be morbid, but I call it death insurance, because you have to die to collect. Permanent or Universal Life comes in a few different forms, such as Indexed or Variable, and accumulates cash values for future uses. These cash values can be used for emergencies, college tuitions, or to fund an income stream or private pension as I like to say.
The best part is, if set up correctly, your private pension can last a lifetime, and be tax free! It acts like a ROTH IRA, where your deposits have already been taxed, and the mean ol IRS cant touch the accumulated interest, or your withdrawals when paid out.
The best part is, if set up correctly, your private pension can last a lifetime, and be tax free! It acts like a ROTH IRA, where your deposits have already been taxed, and
the mean ol IRS cant touch the accumulated interest, or your withdrawals when paid out. Better yet, there are no income phase-out limits or deposit limits like a ROTH IRA requires, all with the security of a lump sum payout to your heirs if you dont make it to retirement! You say, Scott, how can that be? Well, there are a few things to consider. Obviously, like any investment, you should start a plan early. The older you become, the less time to accumulate and the more expensive the life insurance component. Some companies have better performing accounts, and you have to qualify through an underwriting process. Maybe youve heard the old adage, buy term and invest the difference. Ill give you another: Why not kill two birds with ONE stone?

Drive collects 2,000 pounds of canned food Sees Candy sales benefit
A canned food drive and open house held recently at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Rocklin celebrated the 75th anniversary of the churchs world-wide welfare program. Its difficult to quantify the benefit to an individual when you do something good to help them become self reliant, said Sean Murphy, president of the Rocklin Stake. More than 2,000 pounds of food items donated by residents of Rocklin and Granite Bay were gathered and delivered during the event to the Rocklin Rotary Club, Granite Bay Rotary Club, Granite Bay Kiwanis, and the Loomis Basin Food Pantry. Visitors to the open house included Rocklins Police Chief Ronald Lawrence, Fire Chief Bill Mikesell, as well as Assemblywoman Beth Gaines and State Senator Ted Gaines. Helping people get back to work is part of the churchs welfare program.

Local Kiwanis Clubs, working with the California Army National Guard, will be supporting our troops with Sees candy for the seventh year this holiday season via their highly successful Sees for Soldiers fundraiser. The fundraising will run now through approximately Dec. 23 at the sales site in the Granite Bay Village Shopping Center, near the corner of Auburn Folsom Road and Douglas Boulevard. Many Kiwanis clubs all over the Sacramento region sell Sees candy as their major fundraiser for the year. The money raised through candy sales goes back into the communities in many ways. The public can purchase an extra box of candy, leave it in the store and the California Army National Guard will collect the donations and send them to the many units deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Walter Reed Medical Center. Everybody wins! Last year, Sees For Soldiers raised over $10,000 for local Kiwanis clubs and in excess of 1,300 pounds of candy to troops stationed all over the world. For more information regarding this very special fundraiser, call Bev Wilkinson, Granite Bay Kiwanis, at (916) 704-6151 or visit the sales site in the Granite Bay Village Shopping Center.

When the child needs some stress relieving, try a walk, play peaceful music, enjoy the family pet, throw a ball or lie in the hammock together, swinging and talking about the day.

he season of deckyour-waist-withextra-pounds is officially here. So what are you going to do about it? Will you join the masses who faithfully gain five pounds during the holiday season? Or will you do something different this year? It is entirely possible to avoid the dreaded holiday weight gain by following this simple strategy:
all of the power. On the other hand, when you approach your goal from a place of I can, the power swings back into your favor. Use these three steps to regain your power:
Focus on positive action.
the buffet at your office holiday party. You cant taste the fudge that your aunt Frances made. You cant partake in the seasonal coffee drinks. You cant, you cant, you cant. It shouldnt be surprising when the diet only last a few days before your inner rebel breaks out and defies all the rules by mowing through an entire plate of Christmas cookies in one sitting. When you begin from a place of cant, you forfeit
even more during the holiday season than normal, since you will be taking in more calories. If you normally exercise three times each week for 30 minutes, then plan to exercise five times each week for 45 minutes.
Reward yourself positive action. for
Rather than obsess over what you cant eat this holiday season, I want you to take the positive action of exercising into your own hands. Every time that you complete a workout feel the surge of empowerment that comes with the accomplishment.
Schedule positive action.
The next step is to concretely schedule your workout sessions. I advise that you exercise
At the end of each week take the time to reward yourself for successfully completing each scheduled workout. Dont use food as a reward, since youll be taking in extra calories as it is. A massage, a new outfit, a leisurely hour spent at a coffee shop, or even a well-deserved nap are all great ways to reward yourself.
Step Three: Find a triggering event, or create one of your own. Disturb yourself. Try on your bathing suit, or better yet go out and try on bathing suits in dressing rooms with that awful lighting. Try on your skinny jeans. Try on last years cocktail dress. Try on that outfit at the back of your closet that you still cant fit into. Step Four: Take action. Get started on your exercise program right now. If you are already exercising, make December the month to take your fitness level up a notch. Taking action is the most important step, and the most rewarding. Give yourself the power to overcome holiday pounds What a great gift to give to yourself! Motivative Health & Fitness wishes all of you a very healthy and happy holiday season!
