Principal user of global land. Source of livelihood for 1 billion people. Fastest growing agricultural subsector. Expected to contribute 50% of global agricultural output in the next 10 years.Developed Economies Contributes 33% of agricultural GDP globally. A major source of protein intake for global population Between 1980 and 2030, the production and Developing Economies Developing is expected consumption of livestock productsEconomies to grow by 125% Growth driven by rapidly rising per capita consumption in developing countries.

While in 1980, the consumption of milk and meat products in the developing economies was approximately 30% of

the worldwide consumption; by 2030 the figure is expected to rise to 66% of the global share.
Population growth, urbanisation and increasing incomes are key demand drivers for animal-source foods in

developing countries.
As a result of the increased demand, total meat production in the developing countries have grown by 200%, from 45

million tonnes to 134 million tonnes between 1980 and 2002. The corresponding growth in the developing market has been a mere 22%.

The strong growth in demand in the developing world represents a major opportunity in the livestock business in developing economies, where most demand is met by local production, and will continue to be well into the foreseeable future. WB (2009)

South American herd continues to be led by Brazil & Columbia, outweighing recent contractions in Argentina & Venezuela. Brazils growth is led by high domestic demand. In New Zealand & Australia, strong forecasts of dairy and beef prices are driving the growth in the herd by around 1%. The current trends indicate withholding of stocks from slaughter for breeding.

PRODUCTION (Mill. Tonnes)

Pork

Beef market worldwide is marked by tight supplies. Brazil, India and Mexico are the major producers in this segment, with 2-3% CAGR. However, the growth is not expected to outweigh the growing consumption and the worldwide decrease in production. 2011 global production forecast is up by 2% with United States and China being the major sources. Argentinas production is expected to grow by 9% in 2011. Among other major players Brazil, Mexico, Russia and EU are expected to go through a constrained growth due to elevated grain prices. However, the domestic consumption is expected to go up significantly. Global production is expected to rise by 2% with China contributing to 80% of the growth. In other economies like US, Brazil, EU and Canada growth will remain modest due to higher feed prices. World production is expected to remain relatively flat with probable declines in the exports & Imports.

South East Asia, Middle East and Europe are the biggest importers of livestock products. Over the years, the consumption of broiler meat, beef and pork has remained relatively stable. But due to depleting livestock inventory in the recent years, exports from the developing nations may witness a boost.
