About This Document


This document is intended as a supplement to the AP WebFeeds Developers Guide. It describes the values of AP Classification Metadata tags available in the AP ATOM feeds that are delivered via AP WebFeeds.

Whats New
Rev. 1.8 1.7 1.6 1.5 1.4 Description The existing stock exchange code NSE is now associated with Nagoya Stock Exchange rather than National Stock Exchange of India, which is now assigned a new code NSI. Subject Classification Authorities


A Subject Classification is a topic, category or subject that describes the content. A Subject Classification Authority identifies the type of subject and the originating AP taxonomy for that subject. Currently supported Subject Classification Authorities are AP Subject, AP Category Code and AP Supplemental Category.

AP Subject
Description
A hierarchical subject taxonomy developed by the AP that contains approximately 4,300 subject categories and is applied to all media types. Terms in the first three levels of the hierarchy are available to all AP WebFeeds customers. Additional levels are optional values to which your organization may or may not be entitled. English-Language Text

Not applicable (N/A) AM Prep, PM Prep, Today in History and other regular, general features. Food, diet. For use primarily on standing advance National and international NewsWatches and News features on food, recipes and the like. Frequently used Agendas. with stories in the Lifestyles package. Entertainment, television and culture news and features. News copy, regardless of dateline, designed primarily for use on financial pages. N/A State NewsWatches and Canadian news summaries. Stories of state or regional interest under domestic datelines, including general news stories with Washington or international datelines. If a regional item is designed primarily for financial pages, the f category is used, and if it is designed primarily for the sports pages, the s category is used. Weather tables and forecast fixtures. Do not use on weather stories. National political copy. Generally used in months before an election. Use only for result or period score of a single sports event. The code is designed to help newspaper computer systems build a list of scores or ignore individual scores and wait for transmissions that group them. Race wire. Radio network billboards, advisories and scripts. Sports stories, standings and results of more than one event. Travel copy. Television billboards, advisories and scripts. Advisories about stories that may carry any of the category letters. This code is also used for news digests and news advisories. Washington-datelined stories handled by the Washington national news desk. The category code is changed to a or i if a subsequent lead shifts to a different city. Delimited sports (the z-wire). N/A

French Service Id a i g Value Arts and entertainment (culture, music, cinema and fixtures on those topics) International news General domestic (French) news: justice, social, brites (short upbeat stories, mostly odd news), some fixtures and general topics. Because stories in the g category cover a wide range of topics, the slug includes a keyword indicating the topic followed by an identifying slug. Entity Classification Authorities


Entity Classifications are named people, organizations and places mentioned in the content. An Entity Classification Authority identifies the type of entity and the originating AP taxonomy for that entity. Currently supported Entity Classification Authorities are AP Party, AP Company, AP Organization and AP Geography.

AP Party
Description
A list of more than 80,000 names that is continuously maintained and updated with new values. The names are applied to all media types and cover the following areas: Business leaders. A list developed and maintained by AP Information Management. Celebrities. A list developed and maintained by AP Information Management. Newsmakers. A list developed and maintained by AP Information Management. Government and political figures. US House, Senate, Presidential candidates and Governors sourced from AP Elections group; the remainder of the list (world leaders, military leaders, US cabinet and so forth) developed and maintained by AP Information Management. Sports figures. The majority of data sourced from STATS LLC.

Available Properties
Party Type. Main category for each named individual. Team. (For team athletes and coaches only). Associated State. (For US governors and congress members only). AP Company
Description
Regularly updated and maintained company and ticker data that is applied to all media types and includes approximately 35,000 companies traded on major exchanges around the world. More than 50 exchanges are covered, including all major US exchanges. For companies that trade on more than one exchange, domestic exchange tickers and ADRs (American Depository Shares) are provided, with exchanges specified for each. This includes non-US companies traded on US exchanges as ADRs (American Depository Shares).

Available Properties
Ticker. Ticker symbol for a security (one or more per company). Exchange. Code for the stock exchange the security is traded on (one or more per company). Instrument. Combination of the exchange and ticker, separated by a colon (one or more per company). APIndustry. One or more APIndustry values from the AP industries vocabulary.

Description
Names of organizations or groups (other than companies), such as government departments, non-profits, political groups and sports teams.

AP Geography
Description
A hierarchical taxonomy of geographic entities that contains more than 2,000 terms and is applied to all media types. Geographic entities include continents, world regions, countries, territories, US states, Canadian provinces and major cities. Only locations relevant to the content are applied; passing references to locations do not result in a tag.

AP Geography Values
For a hierarchical list of AP Geography values, refer to the AP WebFeeds section of the AP Customer Support site at http://customersupport.ap.org.

Available Properties
Location Type. Generic type label, such as City, Country or Region. Latitude and Longitude. Centroid coordinates. Note Location Type, Latitude and Longitude are optional values to which your organization may or may not be entitled.
