Character Design 101

Students will progress from understanding the basic forms of the human face in black & white charcoal drawings to painting a full-color portrait in oils or acrylics.

This course will address how to begin a painting using composition, color theory and effective painting techniques, through how to refine the details and complete a painting using your choice of oils or acrylics.

Large Canvas Acrylic Painting

Sundays 11-1 pm Jan 15 - March 4 Enter the sparkling world of India Ink Drawing. You will learn the proper use of tools and media; the basics of brush control; hatch and cross-hatching; how to effectively combine line and wash; spot blacks for illustration; and how to create your final pencil art to be rendered in ink.

Quick Drawing / Organic Art


Judith McCabe Renner, instructor Ages 15-Adult Tuition $160, GAC Members $145 8 weeks Wednesdays 7- 9 pm Jan 18 - March 7 Thursdays 10-12 noon Jan 19 - March 8 Mixed skill level class, beginners thru advanced students. Getting to the essence of a subject, telling its story, expressing a mood or emotion through spontaneous quick line drawing. Class will use still life or people as subjects. Materials needed are an 11x14 sketch book, pencil & pen.

Open up your creative flow, working in the abstract, impressionistic, or realistic style. In this class we will go over basic color theory, create textures using different mediums such as molding paste, fabric, paper. Experiment with various tools. Come and have lots of fun and let your creativity flow. Canvas size 30 x 40 to start class.

Editorial Illustration

Jennifer Kohnke, instructor Ages 15-Adult Tuition $160, GAC members $145 8 weeks Sundays, 10-1 p.m. Jan 15 - March 4 Learn techniques and illustrate current events. All levels of drawing experience welcome. First class will have a demonstration of techniques and different styles of editorial illustration. Each class will provide opportunity to work and share with fellow students. Bring sketchbook and your choice of pencils (graphite and/or color), (Micron) ink markers and erasers.

Knitting Studio
Sarah Ellis Nyktas, instructor Tuition: $120, GAC members $108 6 weeks Thursday 6:30-8:30 pm Jan 19 - Feb 23 A class for the whole family. Beginning and Intermediate level class for all ages. Beginners will learn to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, and bind off. Intermediate knitters will work at their own pace on patterns of their choice.

Mixed Media:
Collage and Assemblage
Shawn Sargent, instructor Ages 15-Adult Tuition $160 GAC members $145 8 weeks Thursdays 6:30 - 9 pm Jan 19 - March 8 Create mixed media collage and small object sculptures with regular and non-traditional materialssuch as found objects and images, paper or fabric scraps, plastic, wire and text. Students will learn basic gluing, joining and image transfer techniques, and will find inspiration from materials, their own experiences, class critiques, demos and resources. Composition, color and new techniques will be addressed.

Image Transfer Workshop with Shawn Sargent Saturday 1-4pm, March 24


Explore ways of creating image transfers to achieve intriguing results with simple techniques. Image transfers are a fast and fun way to enhance your drawings, paintings, collages, or get pictures onto objects and materials. You will learn how to do several different transfer methods and see examples of how each transfers onto various surfaces (wood, canvas, glass, vellum, papers, fabric). Then have fun making your own! Some supplies and images for transferring will be provided, but you can also bring your own (a materials list will be available at registration). All skill levels welcome.

Advanced Assemblage

Learn more advanced gluing, joining, tool usage and image transfer techniques while creating assemblage sculptures and reliefs. Explore using found objects and images (a used ticket stub, parts of an old toy or clock), wood, metal or plastic scraps to construct small or large assemblage art. Students will find inspiration from materials, their own experiences, class critiques, demos and resources.

One or two day classes, limited to a maximum of 10 students per class. Story Book Art with Tom Hicke, Ages 8-12 Tuition: $25 1 day, 2 hours Saturday 12 - 2 pm January 14 Imagine Goldlocks in the home of the Three Dinosaurs! Learn to draw unique pictures so full of energy that they appear to leap from the page. Digital Photography with Steve Nyktas, Ages 15-Adult Tuition: $60 1 day, 3 hours Saturday 11am- 2 pm January 14 This workshop is for beginners. Its designed to give students a basic understanding of digital photography. The three-hour class will be divided roughly in half. The first half is lecture and discussion, covering the fundamentals of photography. The second half is hands-on practice taking pictures with a variety of settings and lighting situations. Required Supplies: Digital SLR Optional Supplies: If possible, please bring a laptop (or iPad) which you can use to download and view your pictures. A Taste of Knitting with Sarah Nyktas, Ages 7-Adult Tuition: $60 1 day, 2 hours Saturday 11am-2 pm January 14 Ever wanted to try knitting without the commitment of a weekly class? Here is your chance - no strings attached! And if it strikes your fancy, sign up for the 6 week session. Or if you know you are going to sign up, get a head start with this workshop! Students will learn casting on, the basic knit stitch, and the purl stitch if they are feeling adventurous. Supplies: One set of straight needles size US 8 to 10.5 and one ball of yarn that calls for your needle size. Choose a plain yarn - nothing frilly or sparkly - it must be normal in order for you to see your stitches. Create a Website or Web Blog with Janet Rooney Ages 15-Adult Tuition $60 1 day, 3 hrs, Friday 6-9pm March 9 Knit Clinic with Sarah Nyktas, Ages 7-Adult Tuition: $60 1 day, 3 hours Sunday 1-4 pm March 4 Stuck in the middle of a project and dont know what to do? Forgot how to cast on? Cant figure out how to pick up that dropped stitch? Sarah will help you get back on your feet with a few tricks on fixing knitting mistakes and/or guidance with your current project. Please bring your personal project and supplies. For the tips and tricks portion of the workshop bring worsted weight yarn and approx size US 8 needles.

Tuition $40. per hour.You pick the area of study plus time and day - we'll find the teacher. If you have a group and an idea for a special class give us a call, we will try to arrange it. Group classes are priced at regular class rates. For adults or children.

MOSAICS Workshop
Saturday, February 11th we begin a 3 session mosaic workshop guided by artist Francine Gourguechon.
The first 2 Saturdays are for the piecing and glueing of the tessera (mosaic materials). Francine will show the basic techniques and materials of applying the tessera to the object to be mosaiced. She will also direct students in design and color choice. The 3rd Saturday the glue should be dry and Francine will show grouting tecniques....its fun and messy and brings all the mosaic tessera together into a whole form. Supply list: Tile nippers (any hardware store) Any tessera you may have or can get ceramic tile (tile outlet on Fullerton) glass, buttons, marbles, brocken china, keys, nails and screws, etc. An object to mosaic: medium size flower pot, interesting shaped vase, table top with edges, tray with edges, brick to hold your door open, etc. Francine Gourguechon, instructor Ages 15-Adult Tuition $150 3-2 hour sessions Saturdays 11-1 pm February 11, 18 & 25, 2012

Students will work with line, color, shapes and texture in a variety of materials.

Comic Book Club


Tom Hicke, instructor Tuition $90 6 weeks Junior Club (ages 9-12) Fridays 4-5:30 pm Jan 20 - Feb 24 Senior Club (ages 13-17) Sundays 2-5:30 pm Jan 15 - Feb 19 Sign up for Comic Art Club and find out what it takes to create incredible comic art. Live instructor demonstrations and plenty of practice will help you learn to draw comic book characters! Bring two #2 pencils, an eraser, one ring-bound sketchbook, and two of youre favorite comics to the first session.

Story Book Art


Tom Hicke, instructor Tuition $90 6 weeks Ages 8-12 Saturdays 11-12:15pm Jan 21 - Feb 25 Imagine Goldlocks in the home of the Three Dinosaurs! Create rough sketches, develop color drawings using the wofking methods practiced by top storyboard artists and cartoonists. Class Registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis, payment is due at registration. You must pre-register to ensure space in a class or workshop. Checks should be made to Greenleaf Art Center. Refunds will be given less a processing fee of $10, you must withdraw from a class prior to the start date. If you know, at registration, that you will miss a class session you can deduct the cost of that class from the tuition. (After registration no cash refunds for missed classes is given, a makeup class can be arranged within the same semester only.) GAC reserves the right to cancel a class or workshop if a minimum of enrollment is not met.
