MURIEL SKELLY
BY CHRISTINA ALBERTS, NEVADA LAWYER STAFF

Muriel Skelly knows that pro bono work is intended to help those in need, but she says in her eyes it serves another purpose as well: to help the public understand the court system and lessen their fears about the legal system. Skelly, who has been in practice for more than 20 years, has taken on many cases, but the one that stands out above the rest is a child abduction case. The child, who was a mere infant at the time, was abducted by its father and the mother came to Skelly for help. It took Skelly about two years to find the child, who was tracked from Virginia to Arizona to California, and was living in San Diego while regularly travelling back and forth between the United States and Mexico. Skelly says that when she was able to verify the childs location and confirm she could return the child to its mother, she felt wonderful. The mother and I sat together and cried when we found the child it was a huge relief, she says. In addition to all of her pro bono efforts and her practice with the Reno law firm of Fry and Berning, Skelly also serves as a guardian ad litem. The amount of time Skelly devotes to pro bono and other charitable efforts may be a lot but, in her words, All told, you have to make time. If you dont make time to fulfill your professional commitment to help those who are underserved, youre not doing your job.
