QUESTION 1 a) With the aid of sketches, briefly explain the construction of flying shore and gives example in what condition it is applied. (9 marks) b) With the aid of sketches, describe the method of constructing the 'Jack' or 'Miga' pile underpinning. (16 marks)

a) Prefabricated structures are one of the alternatives to create better construction site process. Explain in detail the advantages of using prefabricated structures. (10 marks) b) Identify five (5) factors influencing the need for medium/high rise buildings. (15 marks)

QUESTION 3

A 16-storey building with 4-storey basement parking area proposed on a site in city centre. The site surrounded with existing buildings and roads, which are always busy. The soil condition of the site contains a lot of 'cobbles' and 'boulders'. The client insisted that the building should be completed within the shortest possible time and there is no constraint on the budget. The basement structure is of a reinforced cast in-situ diaphragm wall construction. a) Considering the information above, select a suitable technique to construct the basement in order to speed up the construction of the building. Discuss in detail the sequence of construction based on the technique selected in detail. (12 marks) b) Draw a typical cross-sections, to explain clearly the constructional method of the reinforced cast in-situ diaphragm wall and their associated ground anchors, where necessary. (13 marks)
