Optical Brighteners

For use in detergent, paper, plastic and textile applications. Optical brighteners function by absorbing ultraviolet radiation and re-emitting blue light. The emitted blue light reduces the yellow colour of a substrate and provides the whiter-than-white appearance. When used in detergents the optical brightener replaces the activity of the garments which is lost during the laundry process. Lignin and other non-brous components of wood are more or less yellow. During the pulping process these components are only partly dissolved and eliminated. The following bleaching step removes more lignin and other non-brous materials but small amounts still remain causing the pulp to have a yellowish tint. The use of an optical brightener gives the paper a brilliant, neutral white. These products are particularly useful to mask the yellowish cast sometimes observed in plastics and bres after high temperature processing operations and are also used in substrates containing pigments or dyes to make colours appear more vibrant.
