Human Rights Awareness Seminar Conducted by GAASH under the banner of Youth Human Rights India in Collaboration with CLD in Sindh Valley Educational Institute Kangan Ganderbal. Date: 14 th of May 2011

The workshop authorized by Youth for Human Rights International, was the first of the series of workshops that GAASH has proposed to organize under the aegis of YHRI. The purpose of conducting such workshops is to introduce the concepts of Human Rights and their applicability to the society in general and social activists in particular, besides building the capacity of the people for the protection of their rights. This initiative has more relevance to Kashmir for its being a conflict zone where HR violations take place on a large scale. The other aim of this initiative is to further advance the Human Resource with comparative perspectives and knowledge to make them effective in dealing with such issues at Grass root levels. It is in this background that a rights awareness program was organized in Sindh Valley Educational Institute of Kangan by GAASH (Geared For Advocacy And Social Help) an NGO in collaboration with the Centre For Law and development (CLD) Srinagar to deliberate on the awareness of the basic human rights and particularly those rights which constitute the fundamental aspects of development sector and in which peoples initiative is of utmost importance such as Right to Education, Right to Information etc. After the customary welcome note and introduction of the organizers, young students gave their respective presentations on the topics of HR. Given the age group and the social background of the participants, it was an amazing experience to know that they were equipped with basic concepts of HR, though their framing of it was amateurish. The program was held at the premises of the School and about 50 participants which comprised of students of 9th and 10th standard and the staff of the school respectively

spoke eloquently about the concept and the implications of human rights, the lacunas and the areas of concern. The program commenced with the remarks of Madiya a class 9th student about the concept, need and areas of concern regarding human rights. Another student Sobiya of class 10th deliberated on the different rights which a person possesses in order to ensure his and the societys development like Right to Information, Right to Education etc. Among other students who deliberated upon the various dimensions of human rights and their implementation a class 10th student Sheikh Nawaz discussed the scenario of human rights in Kashmir and the need to assert it through different agencies. Although the students touched upon different aspects and themes but one thing which remained common in all the presentations was the eloquence and the sense of responsibility towards the society.

Having gauged the understanding of the participants regarding HR, it became a bit easy for us to further elaborate on the nuances of the same. No matter how much one tries to divert the discussion away from the conflict scenario of Kashmir it comes up showing the effect it has on the psyche of the people, nevertheless the discussion was a controlled one and the securing of agenda was made possible by the members in the panel which included Advocate Firdous Ahmad Parray, Umar Qadri Project officer CLD, Balbir Singh organizer and Finance officer GAASH and Muhammad Saleem Project officer GAASH. The resource person Mr. Firdous Ahmad Parrey an advocate by profession deconstructed the different human rights in order to make them understand to students and the other participants. The help of movies was also sought in order to ensure the keen interest of the audience. One of the alluring features of his lecture was the use of local language which made the things go easy and smooth. The lecture was concluded

with the active question and answer session from the students and the rest of the participants as well. Finally the principal of the Sindh Valley Educational Institute Mr. Parvez Ahmad briefly addressed the audience about the importance of conducting these kind of seminars which was preceded by a vote of thanks by Mr. Ali Muhammad Wani and Mr. Ghulam Muhammad Bhat the senior faculty members of the school subsequently. A vote of thanks was presented by the Project officer, GAASH to express sincere gratitude to all the stakeholders associated with the seminar particularly Centre For law And Development, Srinagar for their valuable suggestions and cooperation. To take initiative about awareness regarding different social evils & to eradicate them. To undertake all the social activities governed by the social work curriculum.
