>>>THE BIBLE
Tarore
This true story is distributed to schoolchildren in New Zealand as part of their Maori heritage...
The Rotorua chief himself was convicted by its contents and resolved to become a Christian. He also resolved to seek out the father of the murdered girl and beg for his forgiveness. This mission was, of course, life threatening. When finally confronting the father, the chief of the Waikato tribeand risking the customary tribal response of revengethe father of the murdered girl forgave him, and thus began a peaceful relationship between the two previously warring tribes! A young girl murdered A devastated father refusing to seek revenge A murderer transformed through the Gospel he stole from his victim Then forgiveness given and peace achieved!
In 1835, The Bible Society published 100 copies of the Gospel of Luke in the Maori language. In 1836, missionaries gave one to a young Maori girl, Tarore, at a mission school near Matamata. She read it to her father, the chief of the Waikato tribe. She kept her treasured copy of the Gospel of Luke under her pillow when she slept. Under threat of a neighboring warring Rotorua tribe, the mission school was in the process of relocating to Tauranga. On October 19, 1836, at the Wairere Falls, a raiding party killed the 12-year-old girl and took the treasured object from under her pillow. Later, unable to read, the Rotorua chief discarded it until a slave boy came along who had learned to read, and he revealed its contents to his fascinated listeners.

The Treaty of Waitangi
On February 6, 1840, the nation of New Zealand was born by the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the Crown of England and the Maori tribes. While primarily dealing with land rights and other issues, this foundational document continues to obligate the Crown of the United Kingdom to safeguard and protect
the Maoris rights of worship. Since a significant portion of the Maori tribes had previously been converted to Christianity, the

Roman law required that the historical background of a case had to precede an appeal to Caesar. Such an undertaking was expensive and Theophilus may have been Pauls sponsor. We notice two interesting observations about Lukes writings that corroborate this: first, uprisings were invariably the fault of Pauls Jewish adversaries; and second, centurions are always portrayed as the good guys.
Unique Discoveries
Most of what we know about the afterlife comes from Luke 16.
Our Expositional Commentary on Luke highlights some unique discoveries: we find remarkable textual insights regarding Jesus early years and some surprises in Marys genealogy yield a provocative analysis of the virgin birth. Most of what we know about the afterlife comes from Luke 16. And many scholars fail to realize that Luke 21 is
not the Olivet Discourse (it involves similar idioms, but closer inspection will reveal a different audience, a different focus, and a different occasion altogether). Many are unacquainted with the surprise that emerges in Luke 19, and why no Christians were among the million Jews slaughtered in the Fall of Jerusalem in a.d. 70. Both Luke and John each appear to have set up their sequels: Johns sequel was penned at Patmos; Lukes was the subsequent history of the early church known as the Book of Acts. In Lukes Gospel, and its sequel, more details are given of the apostles and leaders of the early church than is found in any other document. This most popular Gospel among Gentile readers invariably yields a rich reward to the diligent. Good hunting! <<<

ing Genetic Engineering (GE) to alter a species is a violation of Gods order of things. Others would say that GE is actually complementing Gods design, something Man has been doing for thousands of years.
What Is Genetic Engineering?
God is the author of all life. It was He who created every kind of thing, living and non-living. He designed every living thing, using the building blocks of DNA. This begs the question, Is it right for Man to be modifying Gods design with Genetic Engineering (GE)? Some would say that using biotechnology to modify the basic components of human life is an abomination. Us12 / UPDATE / JUNE 2011
Genetic engineering is the collection of techniques used for different purposes: to isolate genes; to modify genes so they function better; to prepare genes to be inserted into a new species; and, to develop transgenes. The process of creating a transgene includes isolating a gene from the tens of thousands of other genes in the genome1 of a species. Once that gene is isolated, it is usually altered so it can function effectively in a host organism. That gene is then combined with other genes to

prepare it to be introduced into another organism, at which point its known as a transgene. A transgenic organism, sometimes called a chimera,2 is one that contains a transgene introduced by technological methods rather than through selective breeding.
Transgenics
Transgenics allow scientists to develop organisms that express a novel trait not normally found in the species; for example, a type of rice known as golden rice has elevated levels of vitamin A. Scientists have also developed sunflowers that are resistant to mildew and cotton that resists insect damage. Possible transgenic combinations can be broken down generally into three categories: 1) plant-animal-human combinations; 2) animal-animal combinations; and 3) animal-human combinations. An example of a plant-animal-human

The harvested plants contain a potential vaccine against nonHodgkins lymphoma.3 Other transgenic plants have been used to create edible vaccines. By incorporating a human protein into bananas, potatoes, and tomatoes, researchers have been able to create prototypes of edible vaccines against hepatitis B and cholera.4 The vaccines are proving to be successful in tests on agricultural animals and humans.

While there are concerns about genetically engineering crops, there are further concerns about genetically engineering higher life forms. The genetically modified cows are not without problems. Researchers accept the fact that the technology
used to genetically modify the cows can affect the development of the cloned animals. In this case, the cows suffered a 38% mortality rate within six months of their birth. Critics of the technology are very concerned that the cause of their deaths are unknown and there are no estimates to the risks of whatever killed the cows being passed onto the humans that drink the milk. Helen Wallace, director of biotechnology monitoring group GeneWatch UK, said:
Besides the obvious clinical problems with GE in plants and animals, there are ethical ones as well. Many people ask where all this will lead. A major objection to Genetic Engineering is that once you design a new genetic makeup for plants and other forms of life, there is no logical place to stop. Even if the intent at first is to correct a genetic defect, once that is done, there is no logical reason to avoid using this technology for eugenic5 purposes. Few would disagree

Modifying Gods Creation
COVER STORY
There is the moral question of whether man has the right to tamper with the natural order of things. God gave man dominion over fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.7 The question today, though, is does that give Man the right to modify Gods creation? One of the greatest fears raised about genetic engineering comes for the concern for those who do not measure up in the Brave New World. If we can modify children to avoid certain inherited traits, will those same traits become future li-

abilities? Will having red hair (or no hair for that matter) make you a second-class citizen? Will people with below average IQs now be expendable? Will they be forced to undergo forced sterilization as has happened in the past? Above all, who will be given the authority to decide these things? Will we cede these choices to the government as we have so often recently? These are very disturbing and very real possibilities. While sounding like something out of science fiction, these types of decisions are being practiced today in regard to the unborn among us. If an unborn child has a debilitating genetic defect, the mother is strongly encouraged to abort the child. Not only can pressure to abort be applied by the doctor and the family and friends of the pregnant woman, but social sanctions can be imposed to do the same. Professor Allen Verhey, who teaches Christian Ethics at Duke University, wonders if health insurance plans in the future will refuse to pay
for the care of a Down syndrome child whose problems could have been predicted and prevented by abortion. Suggestions along this line are already being made and are a real danger in socialized medicine. In support of such policies, in January 1978, Sir Francis Crick, codiscoverer of DNA and a Nobel laureate, was quoted in the Pacific News Service as saying: ...no newborn infant should be declared human until it has passed certain tests regarding its genetic endowment and that if it fails these tests it forfeits the right to live.8 Another issue concerns the dignity of persons. GE involves experiments and procedures that can be detrimental to the health and even life of an individual. It is therefore argued that any procedures that would violate the freedom, dignity or integrity of persons are wrong. Examples of these procedures would be the commercial use of embryos, the mix-

ing of human and non-human genetic material, and cloning. As theologian Carl Henry says about appropriate uses of these technologies: Whatever tends to overcome what would be deterioration in the created order and seeks to restore what God purposed in Creation is on far safer grounds than all kinds of novel and experimental enterprise.9 These procedures can tend to dehumanize Man by reducing him to nothing more than a complex of chemicals. Even now, unborn children are called tissue. They are no longer recognized as human beings. Also, as we learn more about the architecture of man, we find that our physical makeup is governed by more than a single gene that can be turned on or off like a light switch. They are complex in and of themselves and are dependent on a host of environmental factors.
A Call for Ethics
us in regard to the morality of Genetic Engineering? As in many things, some uses of GE may be moral and others immoral. The technology per se is not immoral any more than the Internet or television is immoral. It is Mans use of it and his motivation that is at issue. If we attempt to thwart Gods power for our own personal gain, then the use of genetic engineering cannot be condoned. Also, for whatever reason, if the use of the technology is for eugenic purposes or to create biological weapons, it is clearly immoral. As Christians we must be the Watchmen on the Wall in regard to the use of this technology. We should questionloudlytechnology and techniques that might lead to hasty or untested results. We need to provide a moral compass to assure that the results of genetic engineering do not degrade the integrity of Man nor make a mockery of Gods creation.<<< * * * Any questions or comments can be directed to: Steve.Elwart@studycenter.

When superbugs attack, get out the plastic nanoarmies! Engineers in San Jose, California have created a new form of antibiotic out of manmade nanoparticles 50,000 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair. According to researchers, these microscopic soldiers of germ warfare are able to search out and destroy even the scariest of antibioticresistant bacteria. When their job of slaughtering the bacterial enemy is finished, the nanoparticles harmlessly biodegrade away. Bacteria like methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infected at least 94,360 people in 2005, according to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control. About 18,650 died during their hos-
pital stays due to this serious staph infection that has been busily defying common antibiotics. International Business Machines (IBM) is behind a technology to use nanoparticles to take over where antibiotic drugs have failed. These newly developed plastic nanoparticles use a different method of attack, as reported in the April 2011 issue of Nature Chemistry. The engineers have given the nanoparticles an electric charge so they are attracted to oppositely charged bacteria. James Hedrick, advanced organic materials scientist at IBM Almaden Research Center, explained: The [electric] charge of these bacterial membranes is significantly higher than that of a healthy cell. We
just tune the charge of the nanoparticle to selectively go after the dangerous microbe. In this way, these nanoassassins can be used to target infected cells, reportedly eradicating bacteria like MRSA while leaving beneficial bacteria alone. According to the IBM researchers, these nanoparticles also take a different approach to killing the bacteria. Rather than attacking the bacterial DNA located within the cell, these brutal plastic machetes beat down the cell walls, destroying the bacteria from the outside-in (see graphics below). Hedrick continued: These are designed to slice the cell membrane, to rip the membrane up and elimi-
nate the contents. Its kind of like the way a virus would worka virus drills a pore, empties the contents and hijacks it. This is drilling in little holes, and all the contents leak out. Mario Raviglione, chief of the World Health Organizations Stop TB department says that IBMs technology: ...goes outside the scheme of current antibiotics to something that physically destroys bacteria. If this is proven to work in humans, it will simply revolutionize the way we deal with antimicrobial treatment. While the technology sounds promising, it has yet to be tested on humans. IBM

Andy Tao, an associate professor of biochemistry/ analytical chemistry at Purdue University, and Sylvain Martel and his team at Polytechnique Montreal, are using the technology of the tiny to deliver cancer drugs directly to target cancerous cells. Tao said: Many cancer drugs are not very specific. They target m a n y d i f f e re n t proteins. That can have a consequence what we call side effects.

Tao hopes his technology will eliminate the painful side effects that so often come along with cancer treatment. Martels team has successfully used an MRI system to remote control guide microcarriers through a rabbits body to the cancer cells in its liver. The team placed a rabbit inside an MRI machine and, using a computerized remote control system based on magnets, were successful in guiding a microcarrier at a speed of 10 cm/s to cancer
cells in the rabbits liver. Once there, the microcarrier released doxorubicin into the targeted part of the organ. Like Tao, Martel hopes this technology will help beat cancer while protecting healthy cells. Professor Martel explained: Injection and control of nanorobots inside the human body, which contains nearly 100,000 kilometers of blood vessels, is a promising avenue that could enable inter ventional medicine to target sites that so far have remained inaccessible using modern medical instruments such as catheters. Martels research team is developing a variety of microand nano-sized devices that can deliver medications to the sites of tumors. The smaller devices will be able to navigate smaller blood vessels. THE TENVIRGINS:PART 1
Last month we talked about the Jewish Marriage ceremony and its parallels to the Christian life. In summary, our Justification can be compared to the Jewish betrothal. Our Sanctification can be compared to a Jewish woman preparing herself for her future wedding. And our Glorification (the Rapture) can be compared to a Jewish groom coming by surprise to carry his bride away.
COVER STORY
of our preparation time (our betrothal), we are to be presented to Christ as a pure virgin. Ephesians 5:27 describes the way that this will occur: That He [the Lord] might present [the church] to Himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Paul added to this by saying, That I may present you to Christ as a chaste virgin (2 Corinthians 11:2). Chaste (#53, hagnos) is the root from which hagiosmos (#38) comes from. Hagiosmos means sanctified. Notice, however, the words might and may in the two above verses. They indicate that its Gods will to present us as a chaste and

holy virgin, without spot or wrinkle, but its not a given. In other words, its not automatic. Something is required of us! We must participate in the action. We must prepare ourselves, just as a Jewish bride does. So according to the Biblical model, the presentation of the bride to the Lord is conditional. She must not only be presented as a chaste virgin, not having spot or wrinkle (Ephesians 1:4), she must also be sanctified, holy, and without blemish (Hebrews 12:14). What this is saying is that there is a possibility that while we are here on earth waiting for Christ to return, we can defile our garments and prevent this from happening. We will expand in later issues upon the two different kinds of garments a believer can wear. The first one is the Garment of Salvation that Christ imputes to us at our new birth (Isaiah 61:10). This is our external garment without spot or wrinkle. The second garment and the one that Christ requires for the Marriage festivities is the white
linen garment made up of the believers own righteous works; i.e., the fruit from his life. (Revelation 19:78) Revelation 3:5 tells us that overcomers will be clothed in white garments. This speaks of the internal sanctification and the moral fitness that Christ requires of His Bride. (2 Corinthians 7:1; 11:2) This second garment, then, is the one that can get defiled, stained, and blackened through the believers own negligence. Remember, God said to the Church at Sardis: There are a few who have not defiled their garments. (Revelation 3:4) Defile here means a stain or a blackening of something. It refers to an internal condition, a moral or spiritual transgression. It simply means unfaithfulness. As Strongs puts it: It means dirtying our clothes. As Christians we dirty our clothes by not being faithful and by quenching His Spirit. Let me be clear: I am not saying that a believer must be sinless. All believers sin

at various times and its only when we confess and repent of our sin that we can once again be clean. 1 John 1:9 has to become a part of our lives: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
1 John 1:9
The holy ones without blemish in Ephesians 5:27 are those believers who have chosen to do just that in order to keep themselves clean, prepared, and ready. They are the sanctified ones. They have continued to put off their sin and self and put on Christ. They are now arrayed in fine linen, clear and white. This garment does not refer to the righteousness of Christ, which has been imputed to them (Isaiah 61:10), but rather to their own righteous deeds. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself

Revelation 19:7, 8
In other words, these believers have chosen to make themselves fit, prepared, and ready. They are sanctified, holy and chaste virgins. James 1:27 exhorts us to keep ourselves unspotted (see also Revelation 3:45; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 11:23). Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments (Revelation 16:15). These are the ones who will be deemed worthy to enter the bridal chamber because they have on the appropriate wedding garments. God desires to present us

to Himself a glorious church, having no surface defects, holy and without blemish. But He does not coerce His subjects; He respects our will. We can of our own choosing fall short of the glory of God, by not daily confessing our shortcomings (Hebrews 12:15). The million-dollar question is: What happens to those believers who are not ready, not prepared, not fit, not holy, and not chaste? What happens to them? Are they allowed into the Marriage festivities? Some theologians believe they are; some others believe they are not. Study Ephesians 5:27 for yourself and see what the Spirit shows you.

study the Scripture for yourself. Remember, a parable is simply a truth told in story form to help explain a previous truth. The previous truth in Matthew 24 is to watch, be ready, and endure to the end, for you know not what hour the Lord comes. The parable of the ten virgins follows:

Speaking of the importance of being prepared, fit, and ready for Christs soon return, the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 is very appropriate. There are many interpretations of this parable, so again, be as the Bereans and

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to 2 meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and 3 five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with 4 them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with 5 their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all 6 slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to 7 meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed 8 their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our 9 lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying,
Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was 11 shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know 13 you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. Matthew 25:1-13 Note that ten virgins took their lamps (torches filled with oil) and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of those virgins were wise because they took extra oil. The other five virgins, however, didnt bring extra oil and thus, were foolish. Vines Complete Expository Dictionary says that the number 10 (Strongs #1176, deka)

is a very significant number. Its used 248 times in the Bible and means the measure of human responsibility and also the number of completion. Virgin (Strongs #3933) means an unmarried woman. The word wise (Strongs 5429, phromiros) means single-minded (i.e., one life is being livedGods) and thus, these believers were full of light (Luke 11:34). The word foolish (Strongs # 3474, moros) means double-minded (i.e., two lives are being livedGods and our own), and thus, these believers are full of darkness (Luke 11:34). While waiting for the bridegroom, all ten virgins slept. But at midnight a cry was made that the bridegroom was coming and they were to go out and meet him. justed them), but the foolish found that their lamps had gone out and they had no oil to refill them. They asked the wise if they could have some of their oil, whereupon the wise said, We cannot let you have our oil because there will not be enough for us. Why dont you go and purchase some for yourselves? While the five foolish virgins were gone trying to find extra oil, the bridegroom came and those wise virgins who were ready, worthy, and prepared (who had their lamps lit) went in with him to the wedding festivities and the door was shut. Later when the five foolish virgins came, they said, Lord, Lord, open the door. But he answered them saying, I know you not (Matthew 25:12).
I Know You Not
The Greek word used here for know is oida (Strongs #1492), which means to see, to perceive or to know intimately. The Lord was saying to the five foolish virgins: I dont know you intimately; we dont have a close relationship.
If we did, you would have obeyed Me and brought more oil. In other words, there was no fellowship between them. The Lord only knew them by observation. The five foolish virgins in this parable obviously are in heaven. But because they didnt know (oida) the Lord intimately, He didnt let them in to the wedding ceremony. They were not qualified to enter. The accuracy of the Scriptures continues to amaze us. When you peel back all the details, the Bible is an absolute treasure hunt! For example, earlier in Matthew (in Matthew 7:23), where Jesus is talking to those who professed to be Christians, who professed to have prophesied in His Name, who cast out devils in His Name, and who said they had done many wonderful works in His Name, He didnt say, I know you not, like He does here in Matthew 25. He says, I never knew you. And the Greek word He uses for I never knew you is ginosko, which means to have knowledge of. In other words, in Matthew 7, He is saying: I never

knew you to begin with. I dont recognize you at all. Whereas in Matthew 25 (where we are reading about the 10 virgins), He is saying, we dont have an intimate relationship. Thus in Matthew 25, I believe the person is saved; whereas in Matthew 7, I believe the person is not saved. The key to both is the knowing. A friend of ours sent us the following quote and it seems so applicable here: Far above all the doing . . . it seems the knowing is where we need to focus . . . and let the doing spring forth from the real knowing.
