COOPERATIVE ACTIVITY 3-1: NEGATIVE FEEDBACK CONTROL

(comprehension) 1. Organ that produces insulin and glucagon: _pancreas________

2.

Hormone responsible for raising blood glucose levels: _glucagon________

3.

Hormone responsible for reducing blood glucose levels: _insulin_________

4.

Hormone released when the body manufactures ATP from stored energy: _glucagon______

5.

Hormone released after a large candy bar passes through the small intestine. _insulin__ Explain your answer. Sugar from the candy bar will elevate blood glucose levels above the set point. Insulin will trigger removal of glucose from the bloodstream, returning blood glucose levels to normal.

6.

What is the liver's response to the release of insulin? Absorb glucose and convert it to glycogen for storage.

7.

What is the liver's response to the release of glucagon? Convert glycogen to glucose, release glucose to the bloodstream.

COOPERATIVE ACTIVITY 3-2: IMPORTANCE OF RED BLOOD CELLS

(application) Anemia is a disease caused by abnormally low hemoglobin or too few red blood cells. Anemic people feel tired and run down and are often susceptible to infections. What takes place at the cellular level in the body of an anemic person that makes them feel tired and get sick more often? In your answer, use the following terms: oxygen, hemoglobin, red blood cells, mitochondria, and ATP energy. (Hint: What do red blood cells carry? Why is this cargo needed by all the cells of your body?)

A person suffering from anemia will either have too few red blood cells or not enough hemoglobin. In both cases, the amount of oxygen being transported around the body may be insufficient to meet cells needs. Remember that is needed for ATP formation, therefore ATP formation will decrease and cells will not have enough energy to function at their normal level. This will make you feel tired. If the immune system does not have enough energy to function properly, you may have difficulty fighting off invading pathogens and be sick more often.
