CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the researcher of this present introduction. in cover the explanation about background of the study, problem of the study, objective of the study, significant of the study, scope and limitation of the study, and definition of key term.

1.1

Background of the study Language is the basic skill is needed for real communication among

people. By using language, we will able to express or interact our feeling, through an idea. In Indonesia, English language is learner the student as a foreign language. English must be teach as early as possible, because English is the matter of behavior, in this case in Indonesian which has different language with English. English is one language that used by society in international community for example British, American, and Australian. If we talk about English language is very important in our live, because English language used in international communication, English language can help to look for a job, if our skill in English language is good. We are easier to get a job. In English language there are four skill must be mastered to increase our ability such as reading, speaking, listening and writing. All of these skill we need vocabulary, in which vocabulary is very important to support our skill in English language subject, now if we look at vocabulary such as in oxford.

Vocabulary is the set of word within a language that are familiar to that person. A vocabulary usually develop with age, and serves as a useful and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge. Acquiring an extensive vocabulary is one of the larges challenges in learning in second language. Rivers (1983:125) define the term vocabulary is essential for successful second language use because without an extensive vocabulary, we will be unable to use the structures and function. We may have learned for comprehensible communication. According to rivers (1983:125) in fact argues that vocabulary augmentation seem to become easier as one matures, probably because one has a richer knowledge of the world on which to draw. In addition the more one vocabulary develop the easier it is to add new word the fist ten word are probably the most difficult to learn. Based on the statement about the researcher define vocabulary is total number of word in a language or list of word with their meaning. Vocabulary is based on to increase all of skill in English but infect the eight grade of MTS Hidayatun-Najah Proppo Pamekasan. There are many students have little vocabulary, for instance the student cant speak English well and they cant understand the teacher explanation and the need to translate. In this research the researcher hope to the students in other to the can increase there vocabulary through tape recorder technique and they will be interested in teaching learning vocabulary, the researcher choose this institution namely, MTs Hidayatun-Najah Proppo Pamekasan,because this school is in the village, and most of the students are religious. Therefore, the researcher is

interested to do this research by using tape recorder technique in teaching vocabulary. The researcher choose the eight grade students because commonly. The eight grade students less on mastery vocabulary, so that the researchers try to give tape recorder mastery vocabulary.

1.2 Problem of the study Based on the background of the study, the problem of this study are formulated as follows: 1. How are significant effect of using tape recorder as a teaching media on vocabulary in the 8th grade at MTS Hidayatun-Najah Propo Pamekasan. 2. What are the problem that found by researcher in the implementation of tape recorder technique teaching vocabulary in the 8th grade at MTS HidayatunNajah Propo Pamekasan.

1.3 Objective of the study The objectives of the study in this research are: 1. To describe a significant effect of using tape recorder as a teaching media on vocabulary in the 8th grade at MTS Hidayatun-Najah Propo Pamekasan. 2. To know the problem found by the implementation of tape recorder technique teaching vocabulary in the 8th grade at MTS Hidayatun-Najah Propo Pamekasan.

1.4 Significant of the study The researcher hopes the result of the research is valuable in giving contribution to the English learners especially for the student at the eight class junior high school pamekasan. Besides that, this research also significant for: 1. For the teacher a. To improve learning activity in the classroom. b. To be an alternative in teaching 2. For the student a. To improve student learning achievement b. The student can increases their learning motivation and their English skill 3. For other researchers For other researcher as enrichment of knowledge and can take reference materials about how to teach vocabulary in different method and give information how to implement the technique.

1.5 Scope and limitation of the study In this study the researcher has a scope and limitation of the study. The scope of the study is learning vocabulary. The researcher only one skill, which is vocabulary because the researcher consider vocabulary is based to mastered English language to teach for junior high school not only cannot speak English fluently or incorrect pronunciation, but they also dont know to express their idea, so for this research the researcher takes vocabulary as scope.

The research limits the subject only on the 8th grade at MTS HidayatunNajah Propo Pamekasan, by using tape recorder technique in teaching vocabulary.

1.6 Definition of key term The definition from this research is: 1. Tape recorder An audio storage devise that record and plays back sound including articulated voices usually using magnetic tape either wound on a reel or in a cassette for storage (http//en wikipedia/wiki/Tape_recorder/Accessed on November, 4th 2011) 3. 5. Teaching vocabulary Vocabulary has to be a very crucial thing when the student wants to express their ideas or feeling in communication. The process of reaching vocabulary need good materials and well preparation from the teacher 6.
