%e Future Professional Me
AIter I earn my Bachelor`s Degree in Health Sciences Irom Arizona State University I
want to attend PA school and become a physician assistant. I have always dreamed oI becoming
some sort oI proIessional in the medical Iield. Since I was a young girl my parents have always
encouraged me to dream big and to Iollow my dreams. My goal is to prove to women oI all ages
and ethnicities that they can achieve anything they set their mind to. As a young Hispanic
woman, I want to become educated and respected in my community and be a role model Ior
young women.
There are several job qualiIications that an applicant must have in order to apply Ior a
position as a physician assistant. In one oI the job postings I Iound Ior Scottsdale Healthcare, an
applicant must have national certiIication as a physician assistant. It is mandatory Ior an
applicant to have Arizona State licensure in order to be considered Ior this position. Scottsdale
Healthcare requires its applicants to have graduated Irom an AMA accredited school. It is also
required Ior an applicant to have at least one year oI eperience as a physician assistant. These
qualiIications are the basic education and eperience qualiIications. The job description Ior this
position requires the physician assistant to provide patient services, perIorm physical
eaminations, prescribe drugs, give treatments, counsel patients on health problems, and perIorm
procedures. The second job posting I Iound in Oakland, CaliIornia had more speciIic
qualiIications that they were looking Ior in applicants. Some oI the basic qualiIications include
one year oI eperience, graduated Irom a NCCPA approved school, licensed by the Medical
Board oI CaliIornia, and BLS certiIication. This company preIers applicants to be able to
perIorm as a surgical Iirst assistant, complete accurate patient assessments, possess good
organization skills, work under pressure, possess strong communication skills, and have strong

leadership skills. The third job posting I Iound requires at least a Master`s Degree or certiIication
Irom an accredited PA program, two years oI eperience, and Colorado State license to practice.
This position requires the physician assistant to be responsible Ior physical eaminations, be able
to work with others, independent, and possess good communication skills.
Linkedin has helped me determine what skills I need to possess in order to become a
physician assistant. Debbie Jennings is a physician assistant at Pocono Medical Center in New
York City, New York. Debbie has nine years oI eperience as a physician assistant working at
Pocono Medical Center Ior most oI her career. Debbie completed her education at King`s
College. Tara Ford is currently a physician assistant in orthopaedic surgery at Metropolitan
Hospital in New York City, New York. She is also currently working at The Medical Center Ior
Female Seuality (Sole Proprietorship). Tara also has eperience working in addiction medicine
at MonteIire Medical Center. She has also previously worked at The Floating Hospital where she
specialized in adolescent medicine and Albert instein College oI Medicine where she
perIormed research in inIectious diseases. BeIore completing her physician assistant education
she worked as a selI-employed personal trainer, high risk educator at Long Island Association Ior
AIDS Care, and an assistant language teacher in Japan. Tara attended State University oI New
York at Albany and SuIIolk County Community College and received her physician assistant
certiIicate at Touro College. Carlo Gwardschaladse is the chieI physician assistant oI the
Department oI Surgery at Westchester Medical Center in New York City. He has previously
worked in the Trauma, Burn, and Surgical Critical Care Section. BeIore working at Westchester
Medical Center, he was the staII supervisor at Mary Immaculate Hospital and at St. John`s
Queens Hospital. BeIore becoming a physician assistant he worked as a neurology technologist
at the Hospital Ior Special Surgery. Carlo attended New York Medical College, Long Island

University, and City University oI New York-Hunter College. Carlo is involved in various
groups and associations such as the American College oI Healthcare ecutives (ACH) and the
American Academy oI Physician Assistants (AAPA).
Based on the job postings and the Linkedin proIiles, I Iound certain requirements and
skills that are needed in order to become a physician assistant. In order to become a physician
assistant one needs to have the appropriate education. The job postings that I Iound each required
certiIication Irom an accredited school and oIIicial state licensure. Also required is at least one
year oI previous eperience. The second criterion is well-rounded. The public proIiles I viewed
were each diverse in their own way. Being a 4.0 student is not enough. Physician assistant
schools want students that know about things other than just science. A student that is involved
in organizations and societies is also ideal because it shows that they are comIortable working
with others. cellent communication skills is also an essential skill to possess. This proIession
requires you to meet with patients and to work with other medical proIessionals. All oI the job
postings I Iound listed this skill as a preIerred qualiIication. Another important skill needed is
strong leadership skills. As a physician assistant you will need to be able to administer surgeries
or treatments. As a chieI physician assistant you will need to be able to give orders to staII. The
last skill or criterion is cultural awareness. Physician assistants meet with people oI all ethnicities
and races. It is important that they are able to provide health care Ior people oI all ethnicities and
cultures.

%e Current Me
AIter researching my name online I was surprised to see how much oI an online identity I
actually have. I used Google, Yahoo, and Bing to Iind my online identity. AIter searching my
name using each oI these search engines, I Iound that my identity was pretty impressive. I used
'Damaris Bravo to Iind my identity as well as keywords such as 'Facebook and
'Mindmeister. I was surprised to Iind that neither my Facebook, Twitter, or Wordpress accounts
showed up in my research. When searching my name by itselI on Google, Yahoo, and Bing I was
surprised to Iind that the Iirst link that showed up was my Zinch account that I created in high
school. I also Iound my Diigo account, my ASU Directory proIile, my Linkedin proIile, and my
aIIiliation with my scholarship Kids` Chance. When I searched my name in combination with
keywords I Iound my Facebook account, my Mindmeister, my Animoto videos, my Diigo
proIile, a West Valley View online article about me, a newsletter with my picture, and the
student organization I was a part oI on Orgsync.
ducation
When I Googled 'Damaris Bravo the Iirst thing I Iound about myselI was my Zinch
account that I created in high school. I think that my Zinch account shows that I am determined
because oI the Iact that I am interested in applying Ior scholarships in order to Iurther my
education. The net identity I Iound was on the ASU Directory. This inIormation shows that I
am educated and hardworking because oI the Iact that it lists my on-campus work inIormation.
Although this inIormation does not necessarily IulIill the needed certiIication to become a
physician assistant, my ASU Directory proIile lists my major inIormation which shows that my
goal is to work in the medical Iield. The net identity I Iound was Linkedin proIile. This

inIormation shows that I am proIessional and serious about my education simply because oI the
Iact that I have one.
Well-Rounded
The net link I Iound on Google was my Diigo activity on the TWC 301 Diigo group site.
When I searched 'Damaris Bravo Mindmeister I Iound my Mindmeister account as well as two
oI my Animoto videos! I think that my Mindmeister and Diigo accounts show that I am
interested in digital media and the Animoto videos show that I am creative. Overall, my activity
on these multimedia websites show that I have an interest in things other than just science. When
I searched my name on Yahoo, I Iound a link pertaining to my scholarship. The link displays my
running time Ior the
th
Annual Kids` Chance K Run/Walk that I participated in earlier this
year. This inIormation shows that I am involved in my community and that I care about my
personal health. All oI these online identities show that I am a very well-rounded person. When I
searched 'Kids` Chance Damaris Bravo on Google the Iirst link that I Iound was a newsletter in
a PDF Iormat. This newsletter Ieatured the Kids` Chance Gala that I attended in August 2011
and the award that I received in recognition Ior my hard work in giving back to the organization
that has awarded me with scholarship money. This identity shows that I am artistic and that I am
involved in my community.
Communication Skills
None oI the identities I Iound show that I have good communication skills. This skill is
something I plan to make more evident in my online identities. My Linkedin proIile portrays my
communication skills to a certain etent because oI my customer service eperience, but not
completely. My customer service eperience displays my ability to work with others more than

my communication skills. I deIinitely need to IulIill this criterion a lot more in my online
identity.
Leadership Skills
When I searched 'Damaris Bravo West Valley View on Google, I Iound an article that
was written in April 2010 about my role in the Fashion Club at my school. The article talks about
my interview and mentions that I am the Secretary and that I assisted in creating this club. This
article shows that I have very strong leadership skills. The Iact that I was not only an oIIicer in
this student club but that I helped create this club deIinitely portrays strong leadership skills.
Although this article is Irom my high school education, it shows that I am a natural born leader.
When I searched 'Damaris Bravo ASU on Google, I Iound a link on Orgsync. My aIIiliation
with the student organization Pre-Health Central and my position as the Secretary in this
organization shows that I am consistent leader. It shows that I have applied and carried my
leadership skills into the university level. Both oI these online identities show that I am a
courageous leader.
Cultural Awareness
My work inIormation on my ASU Directory proIile shows my eperience with culture
and diversity. My ASU Directory proIile displays that I am working at the Center Ior Global
ducation Services. This shows that I have been eposed to other cultures and that I am
comIortable working with others no matter what their ethnicity or gender is. However, this
identity does not completely IulIill this criterion. I plan to improve on this skill within the
upcoming year. Net summer I will be studying abroad in Italy and hope to gain an epanded
perspective on global health and culture. I plan to add this inIormation on my Linkedin proIile.

Conclusion: Bridging te Gap
AIter analyzing the skills I need in order to become a physician assistant and researching
my current online identity, I Iound my strengths and my weaknesses that I need to improve. My
strength is deIinitely my consistent leadership skills. My online identity displays my involvement
in Fashion Club in high school and my involvement at the university level in the Pre-Health
Central student organization. I Ieel that the Iact that I was Ieatured in a publication is very
impressive just because oI the Iact that not many people my age are. Also the Iact that I hold a
position in a university student organization shows that I am courageous and consistent. My
second strength would be the Iact that I am well-rounded. All oI my online identities pertain to a
diIIerent aspect oI my liIe. My online identity covers etracurricular, education, honors and
awards, and my hobbies and interests. In each oI my identities, you learn something new about
me. I was really impressed with the online identity that I have. BeIore I began researching myselI
I thought that my online identity was noneistent. I thought that the only links I would be able to
Iind would be my Facebook, Twitter, or Wordpress blog. I was surprised to Iind that these
identities were no where to be Iound in any oI the search engines I Iound within the Iirst three
search result pages. My Iirst weakness would deIinitely be my communication skills. My online
identities did not show that I had good communication skills. I plan to improve this in my liIe by
maybe taking a public speaking course or a communication course and adding it on my Linkedin
proIile under the relevant courses section. My second weakness is my Linkedin proIile. It does
not really portray that I am a good candidate to become a physician assistant or a good Iuture
applicant Ior a physician assistant school. I think this is due to the Iact that I do not have any
relation to health or medicine other than in the education section oI my proIile. I plan to change
11

this by my volunteer eperience and work eperience. It is my goal to volunteer at a hospital or a
clinic and to get a job shadowing eperience.
