Refuse Collection FAQs

Why have I received a black wheeled bin? Your new wheeled bin replaces your old style refuse bin and is for waste that cannot be recycled at the present time. Black sacks will no longer be supplied. Why is the Council changing the way refuse is collected? Challenging targets have been set by the Welsh Assembly Government to reduce the amount of waste being tipped at landfill sites. Councils and residents need to work together to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost as much waste as possible to preserve our environment and avoid financial penalties. Are the new arrangements a reduction in service? No. This is part of a new integrated collection service that collects different types of materials on different weeks. Your brown bin (garden waste) will continue to be collected fortnightly alternating with the fortnightly refuse collection (black wheeled bin). Food waste will be collected weekly (green caddy) which is an additional service. Materials for recycling will be collected weekly (blue box, blue bag & white sacks) which changes the emphasis towards recycling rather than waste. Do I have to place the black wheeled bin at the kerbside? Yes. It will be your responsibility to place your bin at the kerbside by 7.00am on your collection day as with all other waste collections.
2

Does the wheeled bin lid need to be closed? Yes. To guarantee collection the lid of your black wheeled bin must be closed; bins with their lids open will not be collected. Please note additional waste will not be collected. How often will my black wheeled bin be emptied? Your bin will be collected once a fortnight. What day and time does my collection take place? Please see the front of this booklet and your calendar for collection day. For some residents the refuse collection day may need to change; we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Will all my rubbish fit in the new black wheeled bin? This should not be a problem if you are using all of the recycling services we provide. These include: Weekly food waste collection (green caddy) Weekly collection of glass bottles & jars /plastic bottles/cans & tins collection (blue box & white sacks) Weekly paper & cardboard collection (blue bag) Fortnightly garden waste collection (brown bin). If all of these services are used the remaining waste you cant recycle will fit into your black wheeled bin. Where can I get help with recycling? If you would like to be included in the recycling schemes mentioned above, or need advice about recycling please call our helpline on 01352 703350. Remember, there are 8 Recycling Parks which are open every day except Christmas day along with 23 bring sites across the County. Can I have another wheeled bin? No. Only one wheeled bin is supplied to each property. Families of six or larger can apply for a slightly bigger bin if necessary.

What if I dont want to use the black wheeled bin? All residents will be expected to use the wheeled bin provided for the disposal of waste that cant be recycled at the present time; this waste will not be collected in any other containers. Additional waste will also not be collected. Should I put my house name/ number on the black wheeled bin? Yes, we would encourage residents to do this as the black wheeled bin is the responsibility of the householder. My wheeled bin is damaged, can I have a replacement? Please contact our helpline on 01352 703350 for assistance. What will I do with my old refuse bin? If you cannot make use of your old plastic or metal refuse bin they can be taken to a Recycling Park. Alternatively we can arrange to collect them for recycling. Please contact the helpline on 01352 703350. Where can I get more information? If you require further information about any of our waste collection services or require this leaflet in any other format please call our helpline on 01352 703350.

Remember, you must put your wheeled bin at the kerbside by 7:00am to ensure collection.

Weekly Food Waste Collection FAQs

What can I put in my green food waste caddy?
Windfalls Pasta, rice & cereal Food past its use-by date Mouldy food & leftovers Fish / meat bones and skin Tea bags & coffee grounds Eggs (& shells), cheese & yoghurt Fruit & vegetable peelings Stale bread, cakes & confectionary Pet food

YES

No packaging whatsoever for example: Plastic containers Foil & foil trays Clingfilm & plastic wrap Cardboard No liquids or oils

NO

My carrier bags are biodegradable / compostable / degradable why cant I use them? Our collection crews are not able to tell if your bag is fully biodegradable to our required composting standard. They will not have time on the round to lift out bags from bins and read the side. It is far easier for them to identify the bags provided by us. If your bin contains any plastic or biodegradable bag of any other kind it will be rejected and not be emptied. How many biobags should I use per week? A maximum of 3 should be sufficient for most families. Biobags need to be used until they are full before tying up and placing in your green caddy. As Biobags are expensive, please use them wisely. If you run out of biobags, newspaper can be used to line the caddies. I dont think I will have room for the kitchen caddy. The caddy is only 7 litres. It is designed to sit on the kitchen worktop, or under the sink for ease of access and takes up very little room. I already compost all my food waste using a compost bin This is a really environmentally friendly way of dealing with your raw fruit and vegetables. However, food items that are not suitable for home composting, such as cooked food and meat, can now be collected and composted at a purpose built facility. If you currently make your own compost please continue to do so and use your kitchen caddy for the

food you cannot put on your compost heap. How do I obtain a new supply of biodegradable bags? A label has been inserted into the roll of biodegradable bags which will appear when your bags are getting low. Tying this label to the handle of your green container will prompt the crews to leave replacement bags. My green caddy is missing / broken, can I have a new one? For lost or broken caddies please contact the helpline on 01352 703350 What happens to the food collected? All food waste collected will be composted at a purpose built facility using an enclosed system. Will we have to pay for this through our Council tax? No. The Welsh Assembly Government is issuing grants to County Councils across Wales to support the collection of food waste. I have further questions who do I contact? If you have any queries about the service or have any difficulties, please contact the Recycling team on 01352 703350 or email kerbsiderecycling@flintshire.gov.uk

When will my food waste be collected? Food waste will be collected every week on the day featured on the front of this booklet. Please remember to put your green caddy out at the kerbside by 7:00am to ensure collection and remember to lock the lid! Why collect food waste? In Wales 350,000 tonnes of edible food waste is thrown away each year! The Welsh Assembly Government has tasked all Councils in Wales to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill. Organic waste, which includes food waste, garden waste, paper & card and some textiles, creates Methane gas when buried at a landfill site. This gas is harmful to the environment. What do I do with packaged food items e.g. yoghurt in a pot? Yoghurt and other food, would have to be removed from the packaging and put into the caddy and the container placed in with your non-recyclable waste. 4

Can I put packaging in the caddies? No. If packaging is included your caddy will not be emptied. Can I put oil/fats/liquids in the caddy? No. The biodegradable bags will not withstand quantities of cooking oils and liquids and may burst when you remove them from the caddy, (solid fat is acceptable). Oils can be taken in a secure container to your local Recycling Park and emptied into the oil bank. Please ask an attendant if you are unsure. Please do not pour fat down the drains. Can I line my kitchen caddy with a carrier bag? No. The bags we provide are biodegradable and made from corn starch. This means the material will break down by natural processes into harmless substances, unlike plastic and many other packaging materials. No other type of bag can be used for this purpose as it will contaminate the load.

Weekly Recycling Collection

Your blue box, white sacks and blue bag will now be collected on a WEEKLY basis, on the same day as all other waste collections. Please refer to the front page of the booklet for your collection day. Remember your containers must be rinsed out and be put kerbside by 7:00am to ensure collection.
