We start this academic year with the welcome news that the University of Westminster has moved up 17 places in the Sunday Times league table, published in September 2010. We are the most improved university in the country and can be rightly proud of what we can offer our students. Our scholarship programme continues to go from strength to strength and we continue to be known across the world for the successes of our scholarship scheme and for the students we support. As our aim is to build capacity in developing countries our scholarship students must return home after the completion of their courses. I recently met with scholars in Istanbul who had returned to Turkey and who told me about their lives since leaving our university. All of them recognised how their degree had given them real opportunities to change and develop their lives and how important it was to them to give back to their own communities. I was able to announce a further 250,000 of scholarships so that we could continue to support and develop more students from Turkey.
As a scholarship student, you would be expected to give up some time to support University projects. We use these hours to support projects in our local communities, in central London and in Harrow. Scholarship students are now working with the Commonwealth Association for Scientific, mathematics and Technology Educators, International Students House, the Safer Neighbourhoods Panel amongst many others. We are working hard with our alumni to find employment opportunities and workplace experience for our students. I am deeply grateful to the many companies and individuals, partners and donors who support our Scholarships scheme. Their unfailing support helps us to provide scholarships for outstanding students from across the world, helping us to create a truly international university that makes a difference.

THe leADING UNIVeRsITy scHOlARsHIPs scHeMe IN THe UK

Today, about 760 students at our University benefit from scholarships every year. Around a quarter of this support comes from external sources. However, every year we also have to turn down at least a further 3,000 good scholarship applicants. We want to address this by providing an additional 100 scholarships annually, and we need philanthropic support to achieve that goal.

A scrupulous award process based on clear criteria is followed by continual pastoral care for beneficiary students. GROWING yOUR GIFT

Gifts made to the University of Westminster qualify for the same tax benefits as registered charities. Please contact us for further details. If you give us your consent to claim Gift Aid, at no extra cost to you we would increase the value of your gift to the University by claiming the tax you have already paid on the donation from the tax authorities. Should you be able to support us before July 2011, we will be able to augment your gift by 33 per cent applying to the Governments matched Giving scheme.

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is a voluntary society, founded in 1913. It is a registered charity, controlled by its member institutions through an elected council. The aim of the ACU is to strengthen the universities in membership through international co-operation and understanding (acu.ac.uk).

Cosmur is a construction company offering services to public and private sector clients. With over 35 years experience of both new build and refurbishment, it has delivered projects ranging from hospitals to residential tower blocks, churches to leisure centres. Cosmur has provided support for one UK/EU full-time student in Architecture BA Honours/BSc Honours.

cHARTWells
Chartwells are the educational sector of Compass Group and have been running the catering contract at the University of Westminster for over 10 years. Around 100 members of staff are employed on every site to provide student catering, together with both internal and external hospitality. The University is grateful for their service and the food scholarships they provide for our students.

THe FRANK lONGFORD cHARITAble TRUsT

The Frank Longford Charitable Trust was established in 2002 by friends, family and admirers of Lord Longford (1905-2001), the Labour cabinet minister and lifelong penal reformer, to celebrate his achievements and to further the goals he pursued in the fields of social and prison reform. As well as organising an annual Longford Lecture and awarding the Longford Prize, it funds Longford Scholarships to support ex-prisoners who wish to continue their rehabilitation and reintegration back into society through higher education. There are currently 25 ex-prisoners on its scheme (longfordtrust.org).

Investment Property Databank (IPD), established in the UK in 1985, is a global information business. It is the market leader in supply of objective measurement and analysis of property. The IPD has generously donated to the Geoff marsh memorial Scholarship, and intend to provide one years work experience for the new Geoff marsh scholar (ipdglobal.com).

The mBI Al Jaber Foundation is a British registered charity that emerged from founder and sole patron Sheikh mohamed Bin Issa Al Jabers desire to promote better understanding between the peoples of the middle East and the wider world, especially in Europe but also with the USA and elsewhere. The mBI Al Jaber Foundation enables young people from all parts of the Arab world to fulfil their potential through the opportunity to undertake a masters degree at elite institutions of higher education, including the University of Westminster and other prominent universities in the UK. The scholarship programme is open to all Arab residents of the middle East and North Africa who intend to return to their country of residence and contribute to its future development (mbifoundation.com).
INTeRNATIONAl sTUDeNTs HOUse

International Students House (ISH) is open 365 days a year and located in leafy Regents Park. ISH offers free accommodation for many of our scholars. The house was founded for the betterment of international understanding and provides a unique social, cultural and recreational centre for international and British students alike. A variety of events take place including social and cultural experiences and there are also counselling and advice services onsite. ISH ultimately offers students from the developing world opportunities to study at many universities in London and make wide and long lasting friends with people from all over the world (ish.org.uk).
The relationship that Santander has had with the university sector since 1996 has established itself as one of its hallmarks. Already more than 880 academic institutions receive support from the bank for the implementation of study programmes, teaching projects, research, and activities to promote the use of new technologies on campus, or promote the relationship between universities and businesses, among others. Santander supports the university community more than any other bank in the world, with initiatives such as the granting of more than 17,000 scholarships and travel bursaries each year to promote study, research, social inclusion and the inflow of students in the labour market. The bank assists in the development of over 2,500 university projects. In the UK, Santander collaborates with 42 academic institutions. The Scholarships Office has moved to a new location, 101 New Cavendish Street. This is a brand new building with many advantages over our previous accommodation in Wells Street. However, it is totally open plan and students are advised to book an appointment to see us rather than just arrive. This is so we can arrange a room in which to talk to you in some degree of privacy.

We are pleased to welcome our first students from mekong 1000. The mekong Delta Scholarships Programme aimed at building capacity within the delta area. The University provides a comprehensive service to these students and a fee reduction.
NEW SCHOLARSHIPS
As part of our continuous review of our scholarships provision we have made a number of changes to our scholarship offering and a number of new scholarships have been established. These include scholarships for students from moldova, Uganda, mauritius (through CASTmE mauritius), Small Island Nations and the Philippines. We have also established new scholarships to celebrate the Latin American countries bicentennial anniversary of independence. These were for 2010 entry only. We have new capacity building scholarships with Shobhit University, India and Covenant University, Nigeria. Our Alumni Scholarships have been extended to include former study abroad students and students who studied their Bachelors degree at the Westminster International University in Tashkent. Fee waivers scholarships ie anything other than full scholarships have been opened to all international students, previously they were only open to students from developing countries.
PROGRESSION AWARDS
From 2010, progression awards will be given automatically to the top student(s) on each course. The winners of these awards will be invited to participate in the careers awards group which gives students additional support in their career aspirations. Details of this will be sent to the winners of the progression awards in September 2011.
GREEN GOWN AWARDS

The scholarships programme was shortlisted for the Green Gown Awards in the corporate social responsibility category. These prestigious awards are given by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges, EAUC.
GAA
Guildford Academic Associates have once again made a handsome donation to the scholarships fund to support a female undergraduate studying the Biosciences, we are extremely grateful to them for this. We are very sorry to report that Dr Eric Reid the founder of GAA has recently died. The University will be naming a scholarship in his and his wifes memory to recognise their contribution to the scholarships scheme. This will be known as the Eric and Joan Reid Scholarship.
RAJBIR SINGH
The University has established a scholarship in memory of Rajbir Singh a former student in the fashion department who was tragically killed in a road accident. Details of this scholarship are in the postgraduate section of the brochure.

vikram mathur (below right), is the head of the Universitys alumni in India. He and his family have generously given a substantial sum to the Scholarship Fund for which we are very grateful. As yet the details of this award have not been finalised but it is likely to benefit a young Indian female student who wishes to study a subject in short supply in India.
EAST TImOR
The University is currently talking to the government of East Timor, Timor Leste, with a view to co-funding scholarships for young Timorese students to study priority subjects for the development of their country.
SANTANDER
The University of Westminster is pleased to announce that we are now part of the Santander Universities group. Santander Bank is generously providing funds to assist students from Iberamerica and the UK. The University matches these funds creating full fee waivers for outstanding students.
KAREN HILL TRIBES TRUST

Is a charity dedicated to working with the Karen people of Northern Thailand to help them to build a better future. They have three key aims: Improve health by installing clean water systems and latrines Improve education by providing school buses, dormitories and teaching Improve opportunities for generating income by building irrigation systems and regenerating land. The Trusts long term vision is to see the Karen people empowered to help them in a sustainable way. To assist with their work the University of Westminster is offering to full scholarships to suitably qualified Karen to study masters degrees in subjects useful for the future of the Karen as a whole. karenhilltribes.org.uk
SLOvAK Tv SHOW
The University has agreed to cooperate with Slovak Television (STv) on a television programme about studying at undergraduate level overseas. Each month, a different country is featured and four programmes are shown during the month. The first three are 26 minute programmes which focus in turn on the country, a specific university in that country, and a prominent figure with some connection to that university. The final programme each month is an hour long academic competition where students answer questions in a series of rounds. The winner is awarded a scholarship to study at that university. According to the producers, this project is designed to demonstrate to Slovak students that education is their best investment. It is our intention to arouse the interest and provide new incentives that would allow them to explore the world around them, to get to know different cultures and languages, and eventually apply the gained knowledge in their home country. The viewing audience for the programme is primarily students and parents; the most recent broadcast had an audience of 56,000. Countries that have agreed to cooperate so far include France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
WORLD TOUR mBA

The University will be providing a full fee waiver scholarship for any masters course within the mBA tours programme in January 2011 and September 2011. Details will be available at the fairs.
SADIE SHINKINS
In memory of a much loved lecturer in the Westminster Business School, the University has created the Sadie Shinkins memorial Scholarship. The scholarship reflects Sadies interests in assisting children in care and children who are seeking asylum in the UK. The first scholar will join the University for the 2011/12 academic year.

my name is Flavio maria de Fatima Simoes, and I am from Timor-Leste (sometimes East-Timor, one of the newly independent countries in the 21st Century, located in South-East Asia). I am currently turning 25. I studied Politics and International Relations at Westminster in 2006-2009. I was awarded an unconditional scholarship. I am very thankful that the offer from the University of Westminster has changed my life in a very significant way. I am working as a Research and media Advisor for my government, at the Secretary of State for Security of Timor-Leste. I believe that I would not be able to understand what I am doing and contribute considerably to the peace-building and nation-building process in my country, without the genuine and profound tutelage of the bright lecturers at Westminster. my name is Adrian and I was born 28 years ago in the worlds highest capital (La Paz, Bolivia). In 2006, I was blessed with the mA in Tourism management scholarship to pursue my postgraduate studies at the University of Westminsters Centre for Tourism Research. This one year course gave me the opportunity to explore issues related to urban cultural tourism in one of the worlds most stimulating cities. I would have never had the chance to scrutinise these fascinating topics without the generosity of the University of Westminster, to which I am forever grateful for setting an unprecedented example of extraordinary support for international students who would not otherwise be able to fulfil their full potential in terms of career and personal development. scHOlARsHIPs FOR UK/eU sTUDeNTs

The University has a generous scholarship scheme for UK/EU students. Our gold level scholarships are worth 12,000 over three years and our silver scholarships are worth 6,000 over three years. All scholarships will be paid as tuition fee costs, except in cases where the award exceeds the cost of the fees, where the excess will be paid as a cheque. All cheques will be made available in January 2012. The scholarship is guaranteed for the first year, but subject to satisfactory academic progress for subsequent years. For Gold level scholarships, the student must maintain at least a 60 per cent average to receive the scholarship the following year. For Silver level scholarships, the student must maintain at least a 55 per cent average to receive the scholarship the following year. The average is calculated at the end of year one by discounting the students highest and lowest mark, and averaging the six remaining marks. At the end of year two, the average is calculated by averaging all eight marks. The scholarships are for any undergraduate course in the University. These are open to all applicants. For half of the available scholarships, priority will be given to you if you are from our associate and partner colleges and schools. Typically, a Gold level scholarship is set at three As at A Level, or equivalent qualification, and Silver level is set at three Bs at A Level, or equivalent qualification. Please note this academic criterion is not absolute, and other factors such as financial need, difficulties overcome, being the first in your family to attend university and your supporting statement will be taken into consideration. The average entry qualifications for particular courses will also be a consideration.

Helena Kennedy Foundation The University is pleased to be associated with the Helena Kennedy Foundation, and will make a number of awards to those of you coming through this route. The Helena Kennedy Foundation exists to tackle injustice and social exclusion through education, by supporting you if you are disadvantaged and come from further and adult education sectors to complete your studies and move on successfully into employment. Care Leavers Scholarship Care leavers have a less than one per cent participating ratio in higher education. The university has developed new scholarships specifically for care leavers to encourage them to take up the opportunity of a University education. Up to ten scholarships of 4,000 or 2,000, depending on academic achievements will be available for care leavers for London boroughs. Care leavers from outside London will also be considered sympathetically for our Gold and Silver scholarships.
Scholarships for Students with Disabilities In line with its commitment to providing education for all, the University has a number of scholarships available for you if you have achieved academic excellence in spite of severe disabilities. These will be at Gold or Silver level, and you must have an offer of a place on a full-time undergraduate course at the University. These scholarships will not take into account any other funding you may have from other sources.
Each year the Writing London Competition will invite schools to explore a different theme. The theme for 2011/12 is drama. Reid Scholarship for Biosciences Following a generous donation from Guildford Academic Associates a 1,000 cash award is available for women who wish to study biosciences. you must be a UK citizen, the first in your family to attend university and be academically excellent.

Maud Tyler Scholarship Dr maud Tyler, who retired as Deputy vice-Chancellor in December 2006 after 35 years at the University, has made a generous donation. Writing London Creative Writing Competition The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages and the Department of English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Westminster are pleased to announce the Writing London Competition. This writing competition is open to all UK and EU sixth-form secondary school / FE college students who are applying through UCAS to study Creative Writing at the University of Westminster. The winner will receive:
ELIGIBILITy: you must be holding the offer of a place on an undergraduate course at the University and must have recently been in the care of their local authorities. Priority will be given to you if you are from a London borough but we encourage all care leavers to apply for these scholarships. Organ Scholarship The University has two historic cinema organs. We are looking for students who can play the organ to use these on a regular basis to keep them in good order. The successful applicant will be expected to play each instrument at least weekly. A cash award of 2,000 per annum is available to the successful candidate. you should apply details of your ability and achievements as a musician. you may apply at anytime for this scholarship but priority will be given to early applicants.

The Sadie Shinkins Memorial Scholarship
A conditional offer to study Creative Writing at the University, subject to the candidates meeting entry requirements and qualifications A scholarship worth 4,000 (comprising a first-year fee waiver scholarship and cash prize) Publication of winning piece in PaleFire. All entries will be in English and not exceed 1,500 words (one entry per person). Entries may include short fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction. The competition invites students to explore the wide range of material that London offers to the creative writer. All entries should be related to the City of London.
DEADLINE: 31 August 2011.
AmOUNT: Full tuition fee waiver. ELIGIBILITy: you must hold an offer for a full-time Bachelors degree at the University of Westminster and be a student who is either an unaccompanied asylum seeker or who has recently been in care. CRITERIA: Academic excellence and financial need.

Diplomatic Scholarships
AmOUNT: 65 per cent fee waivers. ELIGIBILITy: These scholarships are available to you if you are a child of diplomats from developing countries, whose countries are unable to contribute to the fees. your parent in the diplomatic post must be based in the UK, and you must hold an offer for a full-time undergraduate degree at the University. The scholarship is for the length of the course (three or four years) and is subject to satisfactory academic progress. These scholarships are limited in number and are competitive. CRITERIA: Academic excellence. DEADLINE: 31 may 2011.

CASTME Scholarship The CASTmE Scholarship is an annual award to study a masters degree at the University of Westminster. There is one general scholarship, ie students from any Commonwealth country may apply and another for students from mauritius.

ImPORTANT NOTE: Scholarships are HIGHLy COmPETITIvE. We receive thousands of applications each year, so do NOT assume that application means acceptance. you should also seek other sources of funding. Academic excellence means that we are unlikely to consider (for postgraduate scholarships) anything below a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent.
What should I write in my statement of support? For those applying for a postgraduate scholarship, Section B of the application form is for you to write a statement (this should be no more than 400 words unless the scholarship for which you are applying states otherwise). This is where you explain why you should be considered for a particular scholarship. you must demonstrate:
Who should write my reference letter? The reference letter should be written by someone of stature, preferably someone aware of your financial situation (where appropriate). The letter should address:
How you meet the criteria What you expect to gain from the opportunity How you intend to use your experience and knowledge in the future What your long-term goals/plans are. The Scholarships Committee is particularly interested in how you envisage using the knowledge you gain from your course in the development of your community/region/nation (where appropriate). For those UK/EU students applying for an undergraduate scholarship, Section B of the application form is for you to write a statement of not more than 250 words, making a case for what you can bring to the University over and above your academic qualifications and what makes you a suitable scholarship candidate. Please note that we are looking to the future, so simply listing past achievements is not sufficient.
How the referee knows you Why it is felt you deserve a scholarship, including comments on your financial situation Why it is felt you will be an asset to the chosen course of study This must be a different reference to the one you provided for your course admission The reference must be on headed paper and in a sealed envelope attached with your scholarship application form.
Where can I find my reference number? This can be found on your admissions offer letter and will usually be an eight digit number. If you are applying for an undergraduate degree, you can also use your UCAS application number found on all UCAS correspondence. Applicants for PhD scholarships need not fill in this space but should attach proof of acceptance of your proposal. This number must be included on your scholarship application. We will not consider applications that do not include this number. What happens after I have submitted my scholarship application? Once we have received your application, we will acknowledge receipt by email. This email will also advise you of the date you should expect to hear the result of your application. In cases where an application is received very close to the deadline, students will not get an email of acknowledgement.
As an international scholarship applicant, do I have to pay the 2,000 deposit before I know if I have been awarded a scholarship? The Universitys deposits scheme for overseas students means that if you hold an unconditional offer you will be required to make a payment of 2,000 before you are given a student visa support letter, which may be used to apply for your visa for entry to the United Kingdom. As a scholarship applicant, you can wait until you know the outcome of your scholarship application before paying this deposit. It is recommended that you check with the British Embassy how long it takes to process visas during the July/August period. If you are awarded a scholarship that includes a full fee waiver, you will not be required to pay this deposit and the admissions offices will be notified of this. If you are awarded a part fee waiver scholarship (eg, 2,000 fee waiver or 50 per cent fee waiver) you will still be required to pay this deposit. If you feel that you will come to study at the University regardless of whether or not you are awarded a scholarship, we would encourage you to pay the deposit as soon as possible. If you are later awarded a scholarship that includes a full fee waiver, you will be entitled to a refund of this deposit.

Who decides and how will I find out the result? The Scholarships Committee makes decisions on all scholarship applications. The Committee is made up of academic members of staff from across the Universitys four sites, staff within the International Office, Academic Services, Counselling and Advice Service and external members. All are very experienced and make the awarding decision based on the criteria for the scholarship and the case you make. Once decisions have been made, the administrator will write to you if you are successful informing you of the outcome. If you are unsuccessful you will be contacted as far as is possible. Please note that the Committee will not undertake or participate in any individual correspondence with you, either before or after the decision has been made. The decision of the Committee is final, and is not open to appeal. Lobbying a committee member will only make you ineligible for a scholarship.
What do I do if I am awarded a scholarship? If you are awarded a scholarship you will be informed by email initially. On confirmation of receipt of the email, you will be sent an official letter from the Scholarships Office giving you the details of your award. All official arrangements will be made with you directly. you will be required to formally accept the scholarship and its conditions by signing the contract that is sent with your awarding letter. During and after your period of study you may be asked to participate in promotional activities for the University. This may include receptions and social events, testimonial or publicity articles or even assisting with activities in your home country. During each year as a scholarship student, you will also be expected to do a maximum of 40 hours of voluntary work, if and when needed. Students awarded joint scholarships with International Students House are expected to do ten hours per month voluntary work there. What do I do if I decide to defer my admission or change my course after I have been awarded the scholarship? The scholarship must be used for the academic course and year for which it was applied. In the event of awardees changing course or deferring the year of entry the scholarship is considered cancelled.

What is satisfactory academic performance? For undergraduate students, we require all modules to be passed and an average of 60 per cent overall to be achieved for Gold level or full scholarships or full tuition fee waiver scholarships, or 55 per cent for Silver level or scholarships less than a full fee waiver. For first year students, the average is taken from six modules, the best and worst module being discounted. PhD or masters students, at the request of the Scholarships Office, may be required to submit a report from your tutor or supervisor after each year. This report may be requested after each year in the case of a PhD student, or after semester one in the case of a masters student.

Apply for scholarships only after you have been offered a place (conditional or unconditional) on a course at the University of Westminster. Please do not apply if you have already enrolled or begun a course of study at the University of Westminster. Read the information on individual scholarships carefully and ensure that you only apply for ones that you are eligible for and meet the criteria of. For example, do not apply for the vietnam Scholarship unless you are from vietnam. Photocopy the application form at the back of our scholarships brochure or print the form from our website. Use the same application form when applying for more than one scholarship. Attach the relevant papers only and keep your supporting documents to a minimum. The quantity of documents sent does not give any advantage. Attach translations where supporting documents are in any other language but English. Word process the application as far as possible. If handwriting the application, please ensure it is written clearly and in block letters. Illegible applications will be considered ineligible. Keep your application concise. If we ask for 400 words we mean it, as it is a test of how you can marshal your argument concisely. Exceeding the limit will greatly reduce your chances of an award. Unless you are applying for a specific scholarship, just tell us what level of support you require (e.g. fees only, fees and accommodation, etc) and we will match the scholarship to your needs where possible.
Provide us with a valid email address. The University and its Scholarships Committee is not responsible for opportunities missed because of an invalid or illegible email address. Only send copies of your academic transcript as we will not be able to return any original documentation sent. It is acceptable for your university to send transcripts to us directly, but we will not be able to return them to you at any stage.

WhAt MAkes A Good sChoLArshIP APPLICAtIon?
Application Spend sufficient time on your application; rushed entries will not present you at your best. you are in competition with some of the strongest students in the world so spend as much time as necessary to present yourself at your best. Apply only for those scholarships for which you are eligible. Unless you are applying for a particular scholarship, simply and honestly tell us what level of financial aid you need and we will fit the scholarship to you. make copies of the application form so that you can create a working draft. Use that draft to complete the final application form. The scholarship application form introduces you to the judges. you need to make that introduction as crisp and businesslike as possible. The application form must be word processed. Dont use fancy fonts; stick with standard business fonts like Times New Roman or Arial. Legibility and neatness are extremely important. your application will be eliminated if it cannot be easily read.
Check, check and re-check for typos. Enlist help in this review. It is very hard to proof read your own material. Inevitably, your minds eye reads what you thought you wrote, not what actually made it onto the page. A fresh reader will catch the words that you missed and find the spelling problems. Place the requested documents in the package in the order that they are requested. This consistency makes it easier for evaluators to locate information. Its also simpler for you to check the documents against the list of requirements. Do not add documents that have not been requested. make a complete copy of the application before you send it. It is always important to have a complete record of everything you send in exactly the form it was received. Use an envelope that will hold your application without folding it. As a matter of presentation, the application will look better without creases. Send the application return receipt requested or use a delivery service like FedEx that allows you to track the packages path and verify who signed for it. In this way you will have proof that the application was received by the University. The scholarship application is a paper model of you. make sure your application is professional and compelling.
Reference letter This letter is extremely important. Choose your referee carefully. Think of the letter as an integral part of a package that will present an accurate and complete picture of you, your background and why it is felt that you are eligible for a scholarship. Discuss your plans with your referee now, before you apply. Let them know what you would like to study and why you want to apply for the scholarship. These discussions can help you clarify your goals and plans as well. your reference letter should emphasis two things, it must be different to the one sent for admissions and should be mainly about your financial position. It should also be on headed paper and in a sealed envelope. Statement of Support This presents an opportunity for you to speak about yourself. It should show that you have ideas and opinions, are able to think logically, and can express yourself clearly, with economy and elegance. Clear writing is the result of clear thinking. The first and most important task is to decide what you want to say. Consider carefully what you wish to impress upon the reader. make sure that you have answered the question set, many write what they want to say, not what the Scholarship Committee wants to hear. Do not write in a cute, coy, or gimmicky style. Do show that you have thought deeply and broadly about what you have learned in your academic career, what you hope to learn next and how this will help the development of your country upon your return.
When you have written a first draft, start the work of refining, simplifying, and polishing. Do you say exactly what you mean? Is any section, sentence, or word superfluous, ambiguous, or awkward? Are your verbs strong and active? Are you sure that each accomplishment and interest you mention supports one of your main ideas? Do not apologise. Do not misrepresent yourself. Correctness and style are vital. Neatness counts. Check and check again your spelling and grammar. Ask several individuals whose judgment you respect to read and criticize a draft of your essay. Do not exceed the word count. We ask you to present yourself briefly for a reason. A final note Remember, in any application (for a job, grant, graduate school, etc.) the powers that be want to know three things: why is it important to you, why it is right for you and why you are right for it. your application should be built around this message.

The scholarships described within this brochure are to be held at the University of Westminster only and are normally for one year only (renewable subject to academic performance in case of undergraduate and mPhil/PhD scholarships). Scholarships awarded are for the student only and not families. Students may not bring family members. Scholarships are awarded by a sub group of the Universitys Scholarships Committee and their decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into as to the reasons for their decision. No appeal is allowed, as once scholarships are awarded, all funds have been committed. No monies are paid to students except where a living allowance is payable. Living allowances may be a mixture of cash and food scholarship. Fees will be waived or paid for by the committee on behalf of the student. Accommodation costs will also either be waived or paid by the committee directly. Where accommodation is provided, it will normally be at the Universitys halls of residences or International Students House. Where you will be accommodated is at the Universitys discretion and this may include sharing with an assigned roommate. The University and its partners reserve the right to withdraw, terminate or suspend any scholarship on disciplinary grounds or in case of academic failure. Scholars will be required to assist the University with its marketing and publicity activities as appropriate.
Acceptance of a scholarship implies consent under the Data Protection Act for the University to keep in contact with the student and for the scholars name to be published in relevant publicity materials. Lobbying of any members of the scholarships committee will disqualify applicants from receiving any scholarship. The University reserves the right to withdraw or amend a scholarship without prior notification. Scholarships are offered subject to funding and availability. All scholarships are subject to satisfactory academic progress and verification of academic qualifications. Scholarships are awarded for a specific course and start date. Students may not change courses or defer the scholarship. Funds for scholarships are for scholars use only and may not be repatriated under any circumstances. Students attempting to do so will have their scholarship revoked and required to return to their home country.
