Jesus' Crucifixion and Atonement

Historical and Scientific Facts About Jesus' Crucifixion. Scriptural Facts About Jesus' Atonement. Please take this opportunity to Appreciate Jesus. At the age of 33-years and a few months, Jesus was falsely accused and unjustly condemned to death. Before they crucified Jesus on His Cross, they ripped His beard out, they whipped Him mercilessly with a cat-of-nine-tails, they beat Him severely with fists, feet and sticks, they stoned Him with rocks. At that time in history, crucifixion was the "worst" death, only the worst criminals were condemned to be crucified. Even though Jesus was not guilty of any crime, He was falsely accused and unjustly condemned to be crucified. The crucifixion of Jesus was even more painful than the crucifixion of the worst criminals. This was partially due to the fact that, unlike criminals condemned to death by crucifixion, who were tied to a cross, Jesus was brutally and painfully nailed to His Cross. In common portrayals, most of which are Not Scripturally accurate, we see small wounds to Jesus' hands and feet, a small spear wound to His side and a nearly unmarred, completely recognizable, face and body, with little Blood Shed from any part of His face or body. Each nail was 6 to 8 inches long, with rough edges, and quite large in diameter. Each nail tore through flesh, tendons and Blood vessels, which caused intense pain and much bleeding. The nails were driven through His wrists. Not into the palms of His hands, as is commonly portrayed. There is a tendon in the wrist that extends to the shoulder. Roman soldiers knew that when they hammered the nails through His wrists the nails would sever these tendons, which would force Him to use His back muscles to support Himself on His Cross so He could breath and not suffocate. The nails were driven through His ankles. Not into the meaty parts of His feet, as is commonly portrayed. His feet were overlapped and nailed to His Cross with a single nail hammered through both of His ankles at the same time. This forced Him to support Himself on the single nail that was hammered through both of His ankles. Due to the intense pain the nail produced in His ankles, Jesus could not support Himself with His leg muscles for extended periods of time, so 1

He was forced to alternate between arching His back then extending His legs, just to continue to breath and not suffocating. Imagine the struggle, the pain, the suffering, then appreciate His courage. Jesus endured this harsh reality for over 3 hours. Yes, over 3 hours. Can you imagine the suffering He endured? Shortly before He died, due to extensive loss of Blood, Jesus stopped bleeding and water poured from his wounds. Two quite large nails were hammered through His wrists. His feet were overlapped and a quite large nail was hammered through His ankles. Later, a Roman soldier thrust a spear into His side. Before they hammered nails through Jesus' body, before they thrust a spear into His side, they ripped His beard out, they mercilessly whipped Him with a cat-of-nine-tails, they severely beat Him with fists, feet and sticks, they stoned Him with rocks. When they ripped His beard out, flesh was torn from His face, His face was mangled and He bled. When they severely whipped Him with a cat-of-nine-tails, flesh was torn from His body, His body was mangled and He bled. When they beat Him with fists, feet, sticks, flesh was torn from His body, His body was mangled and He bled. When they stoned Him with rocks, flesh was torn from His body, His body was mangled and He bled. The crown of thorns they placed on His head was woven of thorns that had sharp spines, some three inches long, on them. After they placed the crown of thorns on His head, they drove it down into His scalp with a rod (a staff), Not a flimsy reed as is commonly portrayed. When they drove the crown of thorns down into His scalp with a rod (a staff), this drove the sharp spines, some three inches long, through His skin, all the way down to His skull bones, cutting deeply into His scalp, ripping through His flesh, His head was mangled and He bled. Most men would not have survived this torture. Shortly before His death, Jesus had no more Blood to bleed out, only water poured from His wounds. The human adult body contains about 3.5 liters (just less than a gallon) of Blood. Jesus poured out All of His Blood for you and for me. They ripped Jesus' beard out, they whipped Him with a cat-of-nine-tails, they beaten Him with fists, feet, sticks, they stoned Him with rocks, they hammered two nails through His wrists, they hammered a nail through His ankles, they placed a crown of thorns on His head and 2

drove it down into His scalp with a rod (a staff), they thrust a spear into His side. All of this torture, in addition to the humiliation He suffered by being falsely accused and unjustly condemned to death, then being forced to carry His own cross for almost 2 kilometers (more than a mile, about 1.25 mile, which was mostly up-hill), while the crowd spat in his face and threw rocks at Him. (the cross was almost 30 kg of weight, only for its higher part, where His hands were nailed) (given archeological data suggests that Jesus would have carried only the cross-member of His cross and not the upright portion of His cross. The type of wood and the size of the cross-member matters greatly in determining its weight. If it was oak, 6 inches X 6 inches X 6 feet, it could weigh almost 100 pounds. If it was oak, 8 inches X 8 inches X 6 feet, it could weigh almost 200 pounds.) (given archeological data suggests that Jesus did not carry the upright portion of His cross, which was about 11 feet tall and could have weighed somewhere between 200 and 400 pounds, in addition to the 100 or 200 pound crossmember.) Jesus willingly endured this experience: To open the Gates of Heaven, so you and I can have free access to God (Salvation, Eternal Life In Heaven). So your sins and my sins can be Forgiven, "washed away. All of them, with no exception! JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOU and FOR Me: TO SAVE us AND TO HEAL us! As you ponder this Scripturally Accurate word-picture of Jesus Being Crucified On The Cross, After they ripped His beard out, After they Mercilessly Whipped Him with a cat-of-nine-tails, After they Severely Beat Him with fists, feet and sticks, After they Stoned Him with Rocks, Please Pray For Understanding and Study, Hebrews chapters 1 through 13; Isaiah 50:6; 52:13-15; 53:1-12; Luke 4:1-21; Matthew 8:1417; 9:35-38; 10:1-8; 11:1-4; 1 Peter 2:21-25; James 5:12-20. Jesus said: Mark 8:38 (Amplified Bible) 38 For whoever is ashamed [here and now] of Me and My words in this adulterous (unfaithful) and [preeminently] sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory (splendor and majesty) of His Father with the holy angels. Luke 9:26 (Amplified Bible) 26 Because whoever is ashamed of Me and of My teachings, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when He comes in the [threefold] glory (the splendor and majesty) of Himself and of the Father and of the holy angels. Matthew 10:32-33 (Amplified Bible) 32 Therefore, everyone who acknowledges Me before men and confesses Me [out of a state of oneness with Me], I will also acknowledge him before My Father Who is in heaven and confess [that I am abiding in] him. 33 But whoever denies and disowns Me before men, I also will deny and disown him before My Father Who is in heaven.
