Praise, criticism as HRC heads into new era

Some laud Solmonese for state focus, others say marriage crowding out other priorities

The Human Rights Campaigns search for a new president began in full force on Nov. 22 when an executive recruiting rm retained by the HRC board issued an eight-page job announcement describing the qualications and experience sought for the next leader of the nations largest LGBT advocacy group. The release of the job announcement, which is posted on the HRC website, followed an Oct. 3 announcement by HRC that its board had retained Russell Reynolds Associates, a nationally known executive recruitment rm, to assist the board in its search for the replacement of Joe Solmonese. Solmonese has held the post of president and CEO of HRC and the HRC Foundation since 2005. He announced in August that he would step down from his position when his current contract expires on March 30, 2012. The entire HRC board understands the importance of this search to our community, to our continued progress as a movement and to our organization, said HRC Board Co-Chair Rebecca Tillet. Thats why we will run a process that is inclusive and respects the importance of diversity in the candidate pool, said Andy Linsky, co-chair of the board of the HRC Foundation, HRCs research and educational arm. Since Solmonese announced he was stepping down, LGBT activists have been debating HRCs role in the movement its effectiveness during Solmoneses tenure. In an informal survey of LGBT activists in Washington and across the country over the past week, the Blade has found that most believe HRC has done a good job of advocating for LGBT equality on the federal and state level. Leaders of at least seven state and local LGBT organizations said HRC worked cooperatively with their

Aponte accused of promoting the gay lifestyle

Senate Republicans successfully libustered on Monday the conrmation of an ambassadorial nominee, citing a pro-LGBT editorial she wrote as one reason to vote against her. The cloture vote to advance the nomination of Mari Carmen Aponte for the position of U.S. ambassador to El Salvador failed by 49-37 on a mostly party-line basis. Aponte has already been serving as U.S. ambassador to El Salvador through recess appointment. But to remain in effect, the nomination must be approved by Jan. 3. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a Tea Party favorite, said on the Senate oor that an editorial in favor of LGBT rights that Aponte wrote was a reason to withhold support for her. In her recess-appointed capacity as ambassador to El Salvador, Ms. Aponte has inamed tensions in the very country where she should be improving

Gay Republicans running as delegates for D.C. primary

Log Cabins Cooper pledged to Huntsman
The campaigns for Republican presidential contenders Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman and Ron Paul have each selected gay Republicans to run with them as candidates for delegate to the Republican National Convention next year in D.C.s April 3 presidential primary. Among the gay delegate candidates selected by Huntsmans D.C. campaign is R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans. Cooper said hes backing Huntsman as an individual, not as Log Cabins executive director. He said the national Log Cabin group wont decide whether to endorse a candidate for president until the Republican convention convenes Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla. Huntsman is a conservative hero who can unite the broader conservative movement and secure the votes necessary to beat Obama in 2012, Cooper said. Further, Huntsman believes in the equality of people born under the same constitution and is a strong Republican voice for the LGBT community. Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, says he supports civil unions for gays and lesbians, the only GOP presidential contender to back any form of legal recognition for same-sex couples. He is considered the most LGBT-supportive of the Republicans running for president. But he trails far behind the other candidates in national polls, leading most

political observers to conclude he has little chance of capturing the Republican nomination for president. The Gingrich campaign selected as D.C. delegate candidates gay Republican activists Marc Morgan and Timothy Day. Both ran unsuccessfully in 2010 for seats on the D.C. City Council and both are members of Log Cabin Republicans of Washington. The Romney campaign, meanwhile, recruited as a delegate candidate Rachel Hoff, who ran as an out lesbian last year for
the presidency of the Young Republican Federation, a national GOP youth group. Hoff nished in second place in that contest but made a positive impression on party leaders, leading to her selection as a member of the D.C. Republican Committee, according to the DCRCs gay chair, Robert Kabel. Trans womans beating at Baltimore McDonalds made national news
A 23-year-old transgender woman who became the subject of international news in April when she was attacked and beaten in a hate crime at a McDonalds restaurant outside Baltimore was arrested at her nearby apartment on Dec. 3 in an unrelated incident on a charge of disorderly conduct. According to a report by the Baltimore Sun, police said Chrissy Lee Polis became disorderly and shouted obscenities at a police ofcer who arrived at her apartment after she called police to report she had been robbed of her cell phone, purse and $800 in cash by an unidentied male suspect. She told police the man hit her in the head with an unknown object and stole her purse, the Sun reported in a Dec. 7 story. But the ofcer taking the report said Polis gave several different variations of what happened and became very agitated. Mark Scurti, an attorney representing Polis for a possible lawsuit against McDonalds related to the April beating incident, said he would be meeting with Polis next week and his law rm would likely represent her in the disorderly conduct case, which is scheduled to go to trial in February. Ive reviewed the facts of what happened and the state doesnt have much of a case, Scurti said. But were expected to meet with her and at that time well be retained to represent her in the matter Theyre ridiculous charges. Scurti declined to provide further details other than to say Polis feels the ofcer who responded to the scene after she was robbed treated her very disrespectfully. He conrmed an account by the Sun that Polis was released on $7,500 bail but said he didnt know who posted the $750 bond that secured her release. The Sun reports that the arresting ofcer refers to Polis in his police report as he and uses Poliss legal name, Christopher Lee Polis. The ofcer wrote in charging documents that Polis screamed profanities and disrupted the neighborhood, the Sun reported. The ofcer said Polis let him into her apartment, which he described as having a mattress but no furniture. According to the Sun, the arresting ofcer said in a police charging document that Polis became highly agitated and was causing a major disturbance in the neighborhood and would not lower his voice even though I was continually advising him to do so. Polis continued to scream, You dont know who I am. I will have you red, the Sun quoted the ofcer as saying in his report. Scurti told the Blade in September that Polis had been hospitalized twice after seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder that she suffered as a result of the beating at the McDonalds. Two teenage women were charged in the McDonalds incident. Nineteen-yearold Teonna Brown pled guilty in August to rst-degree assault and a hate crime in connection with the case. She was later sentenced to ve years in prison. A 14-year-old girl, whom authorities havent identied, was found delinquent in the case and committed to a secure juvenile facility, according to the Baltimore County States Attorneys ofce. A video of the beating made by a McDonalds employee with his cell phone created a national sensation when it went viral on the Internet. It showed the two young women punching and kicking Polis while she lay on the oor screaming for help. One of the girls was shown in the video dragging Polis across the oor by her hair. Transgender activists in Maryland said the widespread reports of the incident and the graphic showing of the beating in the video led to a greater commitment by members of the Maryland Legislature and Maryland Governor Martin OMalley to push for passage of a transgender nondiscrimination bill in 2012.

Prop 8 arguments could set stage for early ruling

SAN FRANCISCO Last weeks hearings over two pivotal issues in the Prop 8 federal appeal may be the last hearings before the 9th Circuit rules on whether or not to throw out Judge Vaughn Walkers decision, according to National Center for Lesbian Rights Shannon Minter The 9th Circuit panel, according to Minter, seemed poised to uphold a lower court decision denying the Prop 8 proponents claim that Judge Walker should have recused himself from the trial because he was in a same-sex relationship. Minter, however, was less condent predicting the panels ruling on the second issue of releasing the original Perry v. Schwarzenegger videotapes from the trial that struck down the California law barring same-sex marriage. Todays arguments should be the last court hearing before the Ninth Circuit panel issues its written decision on the two matters it considered today, NCLRs Minter wrote after the hearing, adding it will likely be the last hearing before the court decides to uphold Judge Walkers decision. While there is no set time for the court to rule, it is likely to issue its decisions on all of these matters relatively soon, possibly as early as January.

NBA joins NFL, MLB in banning LGBT bias

NEW YORK With the lockout ending just before the holidays, National Basketball Association players will return to work with a new contract that now includes protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation, according to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The new contract adds the language to the players contracts only. The protections already exist for other employees of the league. Earlier this year the National Football League and Major League Baseball also barred sexual orientation discrimination in new contracts.

Daniels expelled twice under Dont Ask, Dont Tell
A gay sailor who holds the distinction of being discharged twice under Dont Ask, Dont Tell was readmitted to the armed forces and may be the rst gay person to re-enlist as an active duty service member since repeal of the militarys gay ban. Petty Ofcer 2nd Class Jase Daniels discharged in 2005 and again in 2007 was sworn in Monday in the Navy to serve on active duty as a linguist. Today, I took an oath and afrmed to defend the Constitution of the United States of America, Daniels said in statement. I am humbled as I am reinstated to the job I love and by the enormous support I have received on this momentous day. I look forward to returning to the Defense Language Institute and ultimately, my career in the military. Formerly known as Jason Knight, Daniels was readmitted to the armed forces as a result of a lawsuit that Servicemembers Legal Defense Network and the law rm of Morrison & Foerster led on behalf of service members discharged under Dont Ask, Dont Tell seeking to re-enlist in the armed forces, according to SLDN. Daniels, 29, is one of three plaintiffs in the case, Almy v. United States, which was led in 2010. The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the discharges under Dont Ask, Dont Tell which was lifted Sept. 20 and seeks their reinstatement to active duty. Resolutions for the other plaintiffs Mike Almy, a gay former Air Force communications ofcer, and former Air Force Staff Sergeant Anthony Loverde are expected soon. Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, said Daniels reinstatement reects the changes of the post-Dont Ask, Dont Tell military. The reinstatement of Petty Ofcer Daniels into the United States Navy underscores that all qualied and needed service members are now ofcially welcomed back into the ranks, Sarvis said. The new policy and regulations in this post-repeal era make this historic occasion possible. Daniels isnt the rst service member discharged under Dont Ask, Dont Tell to be readmitted in the armed forces. That distinction went to Lee Reinhart, who reentered the armed forces by joining the Navy Reserves in October. Reinhart served as a Navy sailor from 1995 to 1999 and joined the Coast Guard after Sept. 11, 2001. After joining the Coast Guard, he was discharged four months later under Dont Ask, Dont Tell. But unlike Reinhart, Daniels is being reinstated to his former status and may be the rst person discharged under Dont Ask, Dont Tell to return to the armed forces on active duty. Because of the lawsuit in which he participated, Daniels didnt have to go to the back of the line to re-enlist, as others seeking to re-enter the armed forces have done. Eileen Lainez, a Pentagon spokesperson, said she cant conrm who was the rst person discharged under Dont Ask, Dont Tell to be readmitted to the military because the Defense Department doesnt keep track of such information. Daniels entered the military in 2001. His rst tour of duty was with the Ceremonial Guard in Washington, D.C., where he served at White House ceremonies and during state and military funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. Daniels later completed Hebrew linguist training and was stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga. After coming to terms with his sexual orientation, Daniels outed himself to his commander and was discharged from the Navy in 2005. However, in 2006, Daniels received a letter recalling him to the Navy. Even with Dont Ask, Dont Tell in effect, Daniels served in Kuwait for a year with the U.S. Navy Customs Battalion Romeo before he was discharged a second time under the law.
Mich. mayor deant after anti-gay Facebook posts

TROY, Mich. Though she refuses to give up her position as mayor of a bustling Detroit suburb, Troy mayor Janice Daniels has cut ties with her employer, Century 21, according to the Daily Tribune newspaper. Managers of the ofce where Daniels worked part time denied she had been red from her job, despite a controversial web posting last week, but did conrm that she was no longer employed at the ofce. She has not been let go, Dan Kersten was quoted as saying. She voluntarily put her license in escrow, so shes not able to practice real estate. Though she has apologized, Daniels has resisted increasing calls for her resignation since a June 25 post to her Facebook resurfaced, reading, I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there.
Anchorage to see equal rights initiative in 2012

ANCHORAGE, Alaska A group seeking a ballot initiative to approve adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the municipal code barring discrimination in employment, housing and other areas has gathered twice the number of signatures needed. One Anchorage, which formed in September to push the initiative, collected 13,515 signatures for the April 2012 ballot, according to blog bentalaska.com. The number needed is 5,871. Also on the ballot will be Mayor Dan Sullivan, up for re-election, who vetoed city councils attempt to add the language to the municipal code. Equality is a core value of our Christian faith, said Rev. Michael Burke, pastor of St. Marys Episcopal Church and convener of Christians for Equality. Thats why we rmly support the One Anchorage initiative, because it calls for equal treatment of one another and protects those in our community who have no legal rights against discrimination today.

GOP groups spar over outing of Perry pollster

Fabrizio accused of helping Texas guv develop anti-gay strategy
Robert Turner, president of Log Cabin Republicans of D.C., criticized the cofounder and executive director of GOProud, a gay conservative Republican group, for disclosing on Twitter this week that a pollster and consultant for GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry is gay. Jimmy LaSalvia, the GOProud executive director, created a stir last week when he denounced Tony Fabrizio, a nationally known pollster and GOP campaign consultant, for playing a key role in Perrys decision to attack gay rights in campaign statements and ads. Ive just about had it with faggots who line their pockets with checks from antigay homophobes while throwing the rest of us under the bus, LaSalvia tweeted. LaSalvia tweeted about Fabrizio less than a week after Perry attacked President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for their pledge of U.S. support for efforts to curtail anti-LGBT persecution in foreign countries that have imprisoned and in some cases executed gays solely because of their sexual orientation. Last week, Perry launched a TV ad in Iowa in which he questions why gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the military while children cant openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school. LaSalvia told the Blade that he did not think he was outing Fabrizio because the Republican pollsters sexual orientation is well-known in political circles. Turner told the Blade Fabrizio is not widely known as gay outside of a circle of political insiders. He said no ones sexual ad and the broader strategy then the honorable and decent thing to do would be to resign from the campaign, LaSalvia and Barron said. Tony Fabrizio is no junior staffer he is one of the top campaign pollsters and strategists in the country. The two added, It is obvious that the campaign of Rick Perry is desperate, and in a desperate last ditch effort to become relevant in the GOP presidential race he and his campaign have decided to employ a strategy that plays to the cheap seats and appeals to the worst in people. Rick Perry should be embarrassed and the people around him who are the architects of this strategy, particularly people like Tony Fabrizio, should be ashamed. Fabrizio, considered one of the nations leading pollsters and survey research experts, has worked as a consultant for a wide range of corporations and organizations, including the national Log Cabin Republicans group. He served as pollster and chief strategist to the former Senator Robert Doles 1996 presidential campaign and has served as a consultant to the Republican National Committee, according to a biography on his rms website. Tony Frabrizio does not deserve the vicious assault on his character, said R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of the national group Log Cabin Republicans. By all accounts, Tony rightly objected to the Strong ad as being counterproductive, ineffective, and offensive in a word, nuts. As a skilled pollster and strategist, he knew Americans today have no desire to see their gay neighbors used as a campaign wedge issue. Cooper added, The Perry campaign would have been well served to heed Fabrizios advice, and it is a shame that certain individuals within our community are trying to punish Tony for doing what he could to prevent this ad from airing. Thankfully, Perrys mistake has sent a clear message: the days of scoring political points through antigay rhetoric are over.

Log Cabin Republicans also disagreed with the Perry ad, but the national ofce had the backbone to issue an honest press release and list what they disagreed with, he said. GOProud, by contrast, dribbled out a persons private life through tweets. Worse, given that we dont know the internal workings of the Perry campaign, we dont know what connection, if any, Mr. Fabrizio had with the noxious ad. LaSalvia and GOProud co-founder and President Christopher Barron issued their own statement on Friday saying their group has a longstanding policy against outing and they would never intentionally out someone. However, in the case of Tony Fabrizio, top pollster and chief strategist for the presidential campaign of Texas Governor Rick Perry, we did not believe there was
any question about his sexual orientation nor did the reporters who called us to ask about his involvement in Perrys antigay campaign strategy, the two said. Let us be crystal clear, however, Tony Fabrizio is not the victim here. Tony Fabrizio has lined his pockets for years with money from gay groups and is now one of the chief architects of a campaign strategy not just an isolated television ad - intended to demonize gay people in order to score political points, LaSalvia and Barron said in their statement. Fabrizio could not be immediately reached for comment. The Hufngton Post reported on Thursday that a staff member of the Perry campaign took credit for initiating and producing the Perry TV ad in Iowa linking Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal with Christians not being allowed to pray openly in public places. The campaign staffer, Nelson Wareld, told Hufngton Post that Fabrizio was opposed to the campaign ad and described it as nuts. If Fabrizio really does oppose the

Carney says Obama is a man of faith and proud of his LGBT work
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Friday that President Obama likely isnt even aware of attacks from Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry accusing him of being at war with religion for undertaking pro-LGBT efforts. Under questioning from the Washington Blade, Carney said Obama is both a man of faith and proud of his LGBT advocacy in response to recent attacks Perry has leveled against the president that include an anti-gay TV ad that has been widely circulated online. Im fairly certain the presidents not even aware of those accusations, and I think that Ill limit my comments on the struggling state of some presidential campaigns, Carney said. I will say that the president is a man of faith, as you all know, and I will also say that our record on LGBT issues is one that were very proud of. On Wednesday, Perry debuted an Iowa TV ad in which he says hell end the war on religion that Obama has perpetuated over the course of his rst term for taking action on such issues as repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. Theres something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military, but our kids cant openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school, Perry says in the ad. Perry has since said in an interview on CNN that hed absolutely reinstate Dont Ask, Dont Tell if he were elected president. Earlier this week on Tuesday, after President Obama unveiled a six-point strategy to combat anti-LGBT human rights abuses overseas, Perry issued a statement condemning the move and saying the president has undertaken a war with people of faith. Promoting special rights for gays in foreign countries is not in Americas interests and not worth a dime of taxpayers money, Perry said.

Conferees omit anti-gay provisions from defense bill

Repeal of militarys sodomy ban also dropped from legislation
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill unveiled this week an agreement on major defense budget legislation that omits anti-gay provisions found in the House version of the legislation including language that would have prohibited military chaplains and facilities from being involved in samesex marriage ceremonies. The conference report on the scal year 2012 defense authorization bill hammers out the differences in the House and Senate versions of the legislation while allocating $662 billion in funds for military programs and troop compensation. Absent from the nal bill is language found in the House version that prohibits both military chaplains and bases from being involved in same-sex wedding ceremonies. Rep. W. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) inserted the language during the markup of the bill. Additionally, conferees dropped language in the House bill that was added by Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) reiterating the Defense Department must comply with the Defense of Marriage Act. LGBT advocates had railed against the Akin amendment as an extension of DOMA beyond the restrictions that are already imposed by the anti-gay law. Its adoption would have rolled back Pentagon guidance issued on Sept. 30 saying military chaplains could ofciate at same-sex weddings if they so chose and military facilities could be involved in such events. The Hartzler amendment was seen as simply redundant to existing restrictions under DOMA. Instead of these provisions, conferees settled on a provision found in the Senate version of the bill that Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) added by amendment on the oor. The language allows chaplains who dont wish to perform same-sex weddings to opt out of doing so. A military chaplain, who, as a matter of conscience or moral principle, does not wish to perform a marriage may not be required to do so, the language reads. The Senate language was seen as simply reiterating the principles of the Pentagon guidance but with different wording because its passage would impose no restrictions on a military chaplains ability to marry a same-sex couple. Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, commended conferees for omitting the anti-gay language in the House bill in favor of the Senate provision. We congratulate the House and Senate conference committee for having struck the correct balance on the chaplains provisions, Sarvis said. Clearly, there was no place for the restrictive Akin language as the Defense Department continues to move forward on effective implementation of open service in our military. However, the conference report also leaves out language from the Senate bill that would have repealed Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the long-standing military law classifying consensual sodomy for both gay and straight service members as a crime. The Pentagon had asked for repeal of the sodomy ban as part of the Comprehensive Review Working Group report on Dont Ask, Dont Tell that was issued late last year. The Commission on the 50th Anniversary of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, informally known as the Cox Commission, had also called for an end to the sodomy ban. LGBT advocates had also been calling for a repeal of the provision. Sarvis expressed disappointment that conferees didnt include the Senate language in the conference bill. Dropping Article 125 has been recommended for more than a decade by SLDN and several groups, including the Cox Commission that includes distinguished legal scholars from the military and academia, as well as the Comprehensive Review Working Group, Sarvis said. The Senate was right to take this action, and it is unfortunate that their attempt to end Article 125 did not prevail. The nal bill also omits language found in the House bill added by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) that would have expanded the certication requirement for Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal to include the four military service chiefs. Certication happened over the summer, so the language was moot. But these provisions were small portions of massive defense legislation on which House and Senate lawmakers had to come to an agreement. The major question was whether lawmakers could come to an agreement on the issue of military detainees that would be acceptable to the White House. The White House had issued a veto threat over the Senate version of the defense bill that would have required military custody of terrorist suspects and allowed indenite detention of some without trial. In a statement, Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said the bill includes the Senate provision, but also provides a number of additional assurances that there will be no interference with civilian interrogations or other law enforcement activities. A White House spokesperson didnt respond to a request for comment on whether President Obama would sign the bill with this modied language. It wasnt clear whether the language would be acceptable. According to the Associated Press, oor votes in both the House and Senate are expected on Wednesday, after which the bill would head to Obamas desk.

HOUSTON The only openly gay member of the Iowa State Senate believes marriage equality in the state could absolutely be in danger, despite a recent win solidifying a Democratic majority in the chamber for the remainder of the year. State Sen. Matt McCoy, whos served in the legislature since 1993 rst as a House member and then as a senator said marriage rights for gay couples could be in jeopardy in the 2012 election if Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal loses his seat or Democrats lose their majority in the chamber. Weve got to make sure that we win some of those key seats that have allowed us to hold on to a majority, McCoy told the Blade during an interview in Houston. So we need to have a very strong Democratic year across the board, so that The amendment would need to pass in two consecutive sessions of the legislature before it would be sent to voters, so the soonest it could appear before voters is 2014 even with Republican control of both the House and Senate next year. Concern over the future makeup of the Iowa Legislature persists despite a recent Democratic win in a special election assuring that Democrats would continue to maintain control of the legislature through next year. On the upcoming Iowa caucuses, McCoy said some of the lower-tier candidates, such as Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), are doing well and theres an anybody-but-Romney attitude in the state. But he added that Obama is in a strong position to defeat any challenger. I think Obama can beat any of them, McCoy said. I believe that, for obvious reasons, I think that Gingrich makes a better nominee for Democrats to beat, although Romneys been all over the board on his issues. issues on the presidential campaign trail. President Barack Obamas campaign led papers last month for Obama to run in the D.C. primary. Under rules established by the D.C. Democratic Party, delegate and alternate delegate candidates pledged to Obama will be selected at a March 3 Democratic caucus on the campus of the University of the District of Columbia. All registered Democrats in D.C. are eligible to vote in the caucus. As they have in past D.C. presidential election years, many LGBT Democrats are expected to enter their names as delegate candidates at the caucus. In past years, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the citys largest LGBT political group, has backed a slate of delegate candidates competing in the Democratic caucus. Similar to the Republicans, Democratic Party rules require that all delegate candidates be approved by the Democratic presidential campaigns in this case, the Obama campaign, before they can be eligible to run as a delegate candidate in the D.C. caucus. The national Republican Party has allocated 16 delegates and 16 alternate delegates for D.C. to represent a presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention. The D.C. Republican Party this year chose to put in place a winner-take-all primary, allowing the candidate winning the most votes in the April 3 primary to take all 16 delegates and 16 alternates. Under rules established for the primary by the D.C. Republican Committee, the names of the delegate and alternate delegate candidates will not appear on the ballot beside the name of the presidential candidate to whom they are pledged to support. However, according to Paul Craney, a spokesperson for the D.C. Republican Party, a list of the Republican delegate and alternate delegate candidates names will be available at the polls for Republican voters to inspect before they cast their ballot. In addition to Cooper, who is running as an alternate delegate candidate pledged to Huntsman, gay Republican David Black is running as a delegate candidate for Huntsman. In addition to Hoff, who is running as a delegate candidate pledged to Romney, gay GOP activists Jose Cunningham and David Trebing are running as alternate delegate candidates pledged to Romney. Gay Republican Terry Tahir is the only known gay person running on the delegate or alternate slate for the campaign of Ron Paul. Tahir is running as a delegate candidate. Gay Republican sources said several other gays were running as delegate or alternate candidates for Huntsman and Gingrich, but the Blade could not reach them by press time to conrm whether they were out.

HRC search for new leader brings praise, criticism

respective groups on joint projects. Others, including two nationally recognized transgender rights advocates, expressed concern that HRC as well as other national LGBT organizations have devoted too much of their time and resources to same-sex marriage efforts at the expense of pushing for non-discrimination laws on the federal, state and local levels. Those expressing this position say non-discrimination laws would have a benecial impact on far more LGBT people than laws seeking to legalize same-sex marriage. While they dont object to spending resources on marriage equality, those expressing this view say HRC and other national LGBT groups are devoting far too little attention to non-discrimination measures, including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act or ENDA, a bill pending in Congress that would ban employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. I hope the HRC board of directors thinks about this, said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. They do some very great things. But they are moving in the direction of marriage being their primary focus, she said. Keislings view was echoed by Maryland transgender advocate Dana Beyer, a former HRC board member, who said HRC appears to be evolving into a marriage all the time organization. HRC ofcials have said it is devoting its resources to a wide range of programs and projects in addition to marriage equality. They say many of the projects are aimed at changing the minds of voters and lawmakers in an effort to line up the small number of additional votes in the U.S. House and Senate needed to pass ENDA. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), the gay lawmaker and lead sponsor of ENDA in the House, has said the bill has no chance of passing until Democrats regain control of the House. Frank says Republican House leaders wont allow the bill to come up for a vote, even though a sizable number of House Republicans are expected to vote for ENDA. HRC supporters acknowledge that many in the LGBT community have questioned HRCs capabilities and effectiveness, often fueled by HRC critics who say the group hasnt been able to secure passage of ENDA. Some critics say HRC should have done more 2009 and 2010, when Democrats controlled the House and Senate with a Democratic president in the White House. Arlington, Va., gay activist Bob Mialovich, an HRC member and contributor who retired recently as a federal government ofcial, called such criticism unfair. I can understand peoples frustration,
but the reality is we dont have a majority of support in Congress to pass the bills we need to pass, he said. If you are not directly involved, you may not be aware of what HRC is doing. What I know is they are doing a lot. HRC spokesperson Fred Sainz has said HRC played a key role, along with other gay advocacy groups, in lobbying for passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which authorizes the federal government to prosecute hate crimes targeting LGBT people. Sainz also points to the success HRC and its partner groups have had in lobbying for repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. He said HRC worked closely with other groups to facilitate the Obama administrations issuance of a large number of regulatory changes and federal agency rules that ban discrimination against LGBT people in healthcare, housing and other areas. In addition to lobbying Congress, the White House and state and local governments on LGBT supportive bills and policies, and its election-related work on behalf of LGBT supportive candidates, HRC supporters point to a wide range of projects carried out by the HRC Foundation. Among them is the HRC Corporate Equality Index, which rates the nations Fortune 500 companies on whether their internal personnel policies ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In its latest criteria for companies to obtain HRCs highest rating in the Corporate Equality Index, the group raised the bar by calling for companies to include gender reassignment surgery for transgender employees in the companies health insurance plans. A large number of them have agreed to do so. Other projects include a Healthcare Equality Index, which rates hospitals and other healthcare facilities on their treatment of LGBT people; a Welcoming Schools Program, that pushes for anti-bullying and other LGBT-supportive school policies; an All Children-All Families project that trains and sensitizes adoption agencies on LGBT families; and a Religion and Faith Program, which encourages LGBT-supportive clergy to speak out on LGBT issues, including same-sex marriage efforts. Another program trains LGBT students enrolled in the nations historically black colleges to become student leaders in an effort to advance LGBT equality on their campuses. HRC supporters also point to the groups aggressive press and communications operation, which responds quickly and on a 24-hour basis to breaking developments by providing the media with statements and information on a wide range of issues, including responses to anti-LGBT groups
or public ofcials. The groups 990 IRS nance report for 2010, the most recent one led, shows that HRC and the HRC Foundation had a combined income of $39.8 million for the scal year running from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011. With a staff of 150 full-time employees, the groups revenue of close to $40 million makes HRC the largest national LGBT advocacy group. The group also owns its own ofce building in downtown Washington, an investment HRC ofcials and supporters have said helps the group advance its mission. The building, among other things, houses a community event space that HRC calls the Equality Center, which often is used by local D.C. area LGBT organizations. The building includes a multimedia production facility. HRC says the building also generates income through the renting of surplus ofce space to outside groups and rms. The D.C. Ofce of Tax and Revenue has assessed the value of the building for 2012 at $16.6 million, an increase from its 2011 assessed value of $14.4 million.
Surplus of ill will
Despite its income and broad range of programs, some critics say HRC has worked at cross purposes with other national and state LGBT organizations. In a development that created a stir among some activists, veteran gay rights advocate Matt Foreman, the former executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and former head of New Yorks statewide LGBT group Empire State Pride Agenda, wrote a strongly worded critique of HRC that was published last month in two widely read LGBT blogs. The reality is that we are two separate movements: the Human Rights Campaign and everyone else, Foreman wrote. He said that while HRC and its leaders and staff have accomplished many important things, the cause of LGBT equality has suffered because of a decit of trust and a surplus of ill will between HRC and the rest of the movement. Foreman did not respond to a call from the Blade seeking to discuss further his criticism of HRC. Leaders of statewide LGBT advocacy groups contacted by the Blade in California, Illinois, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania and D.C. each said they have an amicable working relationship with HRC. Although they declined to comment directly on Foremans views about HRC, the ofcials said it was not uncommon for LGBT advocates to disagree over strategy and tactics but that the groups they work with including HRC have always worked through the disagreements. Rebecca Isaacs, the recently named
executive director of the Equality Federation, a national group that represents LGBT advocacy organizations in the states, has been involved in LGBT movement groups on the national level since the 1980s, including her role as political director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. HRC is part of the world of people with expertise on a lot of things, Isaacs said, adding that Equality Federation is working with HRC on a number important issues occurring in the states. We are dealing with 50 states, each with different people doing different things. My question is who wants to help? Im not in any camp. Bil Browning, publisher of the Bilerico Project, an LGBT blog that published Foremans commentary criticizing HRC, said he was among HRCs strongest critics in past years. But he said he has seen what he considers a major change for the better by HRC under Solmoneses leadership. Among other things, Browning said Solmonese greatly improved HRCs relations with state LGBT organizations and significantly boosted HRC support for state and local initiatives. He said he saw this first hand as one of the leaders of the state LGBT group in Indiana, where Browning lived before moving to D.C. According to Browning, HRC provided him with important support when he coordinated a successful effort to pass a non-discrimination ordinance in Indianapolis that includes protections for LGBT people. And as Indiana was ghting its marriage amendment battle, who was one of the rst groups to stand up and say do you need cash, do you need polling, what do you need? It was HRC, Browning said. I have to admit that for all my quibbles with HRC and some of the various stuff that theyve done over the years, LGBT rights wouldnt be as far as it is in Indiana without them, he said. Rick Rosendall, vice president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, D.C., said he is troubled over what he called internecine sniping over HRC in the LGBT movement. The reality is that all LGBT activists and donors do not share the same goals, priorities and approaches. He said GLAA and HRC havent always seen eye to eye, but we have had a mutually respectful and productive relationship for many years. He added, HRC does a lot of useful things, but if someone doesnt like them, there are plenty of other groups to support. HRC has a large and loyal donor base, and its headquarters is not going to crumble because of one more harsh oped. Any movement as diverse as ours is inherently messy. Deal with it, folks.

GOP senators target ambassador over pro-gay views

diplomatic relations, DeMint said. Her decision to publish an opinion piece hostile to the culture of El Salvadorans presents even more doubts about her tness for the job. This op-ed upset a large number of community and pro-life groups in El Salvador who were insulted by Ms. Apontes rhetoric. The op-ed, titled For the Elimination of Prejudices Wherever They Exist, was published on June 28 in La Prensa Graca, a Spanish-language newspaper in El Salvador. The piece followed a call from the State Department to Foreign Services ofcers urging them to recognize June as the month of Pride overseas. According to the Associated Press, Aponte wrote, No one should be subjected to aggression because of who he is or who he loves. Homophobia and brutal hostility are often based on lack of understanding about what it truly means to be gay or transgender. To avoid negative perceptions, we must work together with education and support for those facing those who promote hatred. DeMint never specically described the piece on the oor Monday as a pro-LGBT editorial. However, DeMint criticized Apontes remarks in a November article in the publication Human Events as lecturing El Salvador on the need to accept and support the gay lifestyle. According to DeMint, a coalition of more than three dozen groups in El Salvador wrote to the Senate asking members to oppose Apontes conrmation following publication of the op-ed. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) defended Aponte on the Senate oor as a qualied, talented Latina and said Republican attacks on her op-ed were unwarranted because it was consistent with her countrys policy. The true irony of this trumped-up allegation is that the editorial, which Republicans assert stirred controversy and was rebuked throughout Latin America, mirrored a May 2010 decree by Salvadoran President Funes prohibiting discrimination by the Government of El Salvador based on sexual orientation, Menendez said. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Scott Brown (R-Mass.) were the only the Republicans who joined Democrats in support of Aponte. Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) sided with Republicans in voting no. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also cast a no vote, but doing so allows him to bring up the nomination again. In a statement, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney slammed Republicans for libustering the nomination as an example of Republicans choosing to play politics with Americas national interests. said. Now is not the time for playing politics, its time for Congress to do the right thing for the American people. But the op-ed was only one issue that Republicans raised about Aponte. The GOP also took issue with a relationship she had with an insurance salesman named Roberto Tamayo that ended in 1994. In 1993, a Cuban intelligence defector accused Tamayo of being a Cuban spy and trying to recruit supporters. However, Tamayo was later reportedly said to have been an informant for the FBI. On the Senate oor, DeMint accused the Obama administration of not providing enough information on this issue and Senate Foreign Affairs Chair John Kerry (D-Mass.) of not allowing enough discussion on these reports. For nearly a year and a half, Republicans have been continually denied access to Ms. Apontes full FBI record and other information, as the Obama administration has rebuffed our requests related to Ms. Apontes past, DeMint said. On the Senate oor, Menendez disputed the notion that anything in Apontes FBI le should detract from her ability to continue to serve as ambassador. Pursuant to precedent, one Democrat and one Republican reviewed that le, Menendez said. I was the Democrat. There was nothing in the le to substantiate the concerns raised by my colleagues. The issue of Apontes relationship came up before in 1994 when former President Clinton nominated her to become U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic. She asked that her nomination be withdrawn after her relationship became public. A Senate aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said any justication the Republicans used to vote against Aponte was just bullshit. It was just this toss around, the aide
said. They just oated those two things over and over again. I did not expect it to get traction, and it got traction. In fact, I think, at the end, they had problems with Democrats, I know they had only one [vote no], but I think they had more and they had to twist some arms. Its unclear whether Reid will bring the
nomination to the oor before Apontes recess appointment ends. For the cloture vote to be successful, Reid would need support from 11 more senators. Asked whether the conrmation vote could still succeed, the anonymous aide expressed skepticism and said, I dont see where this is going anywhere.
Veteran gay journalist Varnell dead at 70

A long-time gay journalist, Paul Varnell whose column appeared in the Washington Blade for years died from complications of stroke and pneumonia, according to the Windy City Times. Varnell became an LGBT activist and writer in Chicago in the early 1980s. He was a prominent HIV/AIDS activist during the pandemics early days which led Dr. Bernard Turnock, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, to appoint Varnell to the AIDS Interdisciplinary Advisory Committee in 1985, pushing for widespread testing, along with advocating for condentiality. According to the Windy City Times, Varnell argued that knowing their status could help gay men make better decisions about their health and sexual activity. Varnells activism led to his publishing of a regular column for the Windy City Times which later became syndicated, running in many major LGBT papers, including the Washington Blade. In 1989, Varnell teamed up with Rex Wockner of the Outlines newspaper to attempt to get a marriage license at the Cook County marriage bureau, which they were denied. The two journalists made news when they led a human rights complaint through the Illinois Human Rights Department alleging discrimination. Varnell continued to publish intellectual, nononsense essays until very recently when his health declined. His columns were popular and controversial, often eliciting strong responses for the newspapers that carried the articles. We published Paul Varnells columns for years in the Blade and he was always professional and kind, said Washington Blade editor Kevin Naff. I enjoyed our conversations and debates of the issues of the day and always found Paul fair and smart and our readers appreciated and responded to his informed libertarian views. The LGBT movement will miss him.

As Maryland prepares for another shot at marriage equality when the legislature reconvenes next month, one national marriage advocacy group has bowed out of the ght. Evan Wolfson of Freedom to Marry told the Blade last week that because of concerns about a marriage bill being sent to a voter referendum in 2012, that his organization declined to join a high-prole and diverse coalition of groups supporting the marriage bill. In Maryland, because of the likelihood that marriage legislation can be forced onto the ballot, the key question is not just passing a bill in the legislature, but defending it against an attack campaign via ballot measure, Wolfson said. Freedom to Marry has made it clear to members of the coalition and to lawmakers that our goal is to win, not simply to pass a bill, if there is not sufcient groundwork and investment in a campaign to win at the ballot. He added, We have continued to press for clarity and progress on benchmarks for success, and have urged elected ofcials, national organizations, and advocates on the ground to show the plan, investment, and activities needed now to build public support and succeed at the ballot, not just the legislature, he told the Blade Wolfsons remarks understandably rattled supporters of the bill and members of the Marylanders for Marriage Equality coalition, who were no doubt stunned that a fellow marriage advocate would speak publicly about his doubts. It didnt take long for the ironically named National Organization for Marriage to pounce on Wolfsons comments. NOM has sent at least two emails to supporters touting Wolfsons concerns. Evan Wolfson, one of the chief architects of the gay marriage movement, recently
land, NOM wrote. His reason? Wolfson knows that unlike in New York, any gay marriage bill in Maryland will have to be defended at the ballot box. The people will have a chance to vote, and right now he sees no reasonable chance of victory. That Wolfson nds himself a tool of NOMs anti-gay propaganda is an unexpected twist, but he should have known that any skepticism from arguably the countrys leading expert on marriage equality would be exploited like this. Whats more troubling than the public nature of the remarks is that if you dont think you can win marriage equality in Maryland, then you should probably close up shop. Maryland is the nations wealthiest state with the most millionaires per capita, so a fundraiser worth his or her salt should be able to scare up the money needed to fund a referendum ght. In addition, Maryland is a solidly blue state with a supportive governor who will introduce the bill. The Senate has already passed the bill. And recent polls show momentum in favor of marriage equality for the states gay and lesbian couples. The most recent poll shows 51 percent of state voters support same-sex marriage. Granted, thats before NOMs inevitable homophobic ad campaign gets going, but its still a good place to start and better than in other states where Freedom to Marry has been engaged. What is Wolfsons benchmark for joining the ght? Sixty percent support? You wont nd that number anywhere in the country, so, again, if not Maryland, then where? And if Freedom to Marry is so skeptical about Marylands ability to win this ght, then why does it continue to raise money from state residents? Ive heard from several Marylanders in the past week outraged after receiving email solicitations for donations to Freedom to Marry just hours after announcing that it wont join the coalition advocating for the state bill. prepare for a referendum, including the ACLU, which employs a full-time staff member dedicated to this effort. Its perfectly reasonable for Wolfson and, more importantly, nancial donors to a referendum ght, to demand benchmarks and metrics before committing resources. But the only changes from earlier this year, when Freedom to Marry was engaged in the Maryland effort, have been favorable to the cause: Gov. OMalleys visibility and support; poll numbers moving in the right direction. So why the sudden change? And is Freedom to Marry applying its benchmarks consistently? All this attention to the referendum ignores the fact that the legislature still needs to pass a bill. The composition of the legislature hasnt changed since it failed to pass the measure earlier this year, so passage is not assured. Winning this ght will require all hands on deck. Its disappointing that Freedom to Marry wont be on board, but momentum is on the side of justice and equality, so the coalition must carry on and prove Wolfson wrong.

D.C. citizens groups push Post; Zipcar zapped for gay cars
with the group of self-proclaimed citizen representatives was any reection on the standing such groups actually command in their so-called jurisdictions on issues of importance to local residents. The legitimacy of their public positions is highly questionable when viewed a little closer to the ground than the altitude of a respected national newspaper with a long history of being criticized for a dearth of in-depth or robust reporting on local issues. The Posts ombudsman illustrated only how seemingly distant the publication is from understanding the growing irrelevance of these groups in their respective communities especially in the context of neighborhood economic development and the availability of local commercial community amenities. The resulting one-sided and dismaying portrayal of the representative authenticity of these small groups harkens back to a former Washington Post subscription sales advertising tag line: If you dont get it, you dont get it. The same, of course, could be said of the groups clamoring for help in promoting their signature antibusiness and anti-development agendas. Local community blogs and news publications examining community issues in greater detail and enjoying robust reader dialogue on such matters often demonstrate that these groups do not represent much more than the opinions of a tiny participating membership. These organized antagonists are well known to readers of the Washington Blade due to extensive coverage of their mischiefmaking over the years battling local community businesses, including gay-owned and gay-patronized enterprises. In neighborhoods throughout the city, tumultuous and lengthy ghts engendered by these groups over licensing, zoning and operational issues have become a part of common lore. Notorious neighborhood obstructionists such as the Kalorama Citizens Association (KCA), Citizens Association of Georgetown (CAG), Cleveland Park Citizens Association (CPCA), Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Alliance (MPNA) and the Dupont Circle Citizens Association (DCCA) have interjected themselves into nearly every conceivable business regulatory application and economic development proposal in their respective highprole commercial and residential areas. While acknowledging that The Post cant cover every neighborhood dispute as extensively as hyper-local sources, enhancing coverage of community issues is a laudable goal. However, failing to recognize that self-anointed guardians of efdoms mostly produce a deluge of spit-sputtering amazement and anger from the vast majority of local residents is to miss the real story. report last Friday on his widely read and well-regarded local news blog. The Channel 9 News report was reportedly prompted by a neighborhood resident complaining about a Zipcar banner displayed at one of the companys car retrieval and return parking lots at 14th and Corcoran streets, serving the Logan Circle area. The signage, prominently hung at the center of the lot and facing heavily trafcked 14th Street, features a yellow MINI Cooper with a rainbow license plate and is emblazoned with the slogan Some of our best cars are gay. The reporter lmed reactions to the banner from several passersby. Although no one identied their sexual orientation on-camera, most considered it a benign commercial pitch. There was, however, a notable generational divide, with an older resident nding the message very offensive and predicting it would prove counterproductive within the LGBT community. Although unreported by WUSA-TV News, the banner was a Zipcar afnity marketing effort in support of the rst annual 14th Street Homo Holiday Shop Hop held the previous weekend on Dec. 3, sponsored by the Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CAGLCC) and involving numerous participating retailers on the commercial corridor. Zipcars specialized slogan is apparently not one that everyone gets although it remains proudly on display.

Activists: Help Us, Post in which he detailed complaints by the Federation of Citizens Associations of the District of Columbia regarding coverage of local neighborhood and citywide issues. The criticism by member groups centered on a self-perceived inability to hold their city government accountable without The Post behind them. These controversial and increasingly insular groups now appear to come hat-in-hand seeking assistance in advancing the objectives they are unable to achieve as a result of developing popular support among residents. Fight the urge to caricature your opponents

Gays arent all liberal and ighty; Republicans arent all straight and rich

In Hans Christian Andersens The Snow Queen, a hobgoblin creates a mirror that shows the worst of everyone: moles overwhelm otherwise normal faces and items of beauty resemble boiled spinach. The mirror shatters and shards of it enter peoples eyes, which leaves them unable to see good in anyone. This mirror and its shards might be real, for their existence would explain much of our politics. If there is bipartisan agreement on anything, it is that our side is on the side of angels and the other guys are on Satans payroll. The Democrats are out to swindle the public for government bureaucrats, while Republicans are puppets of Wall Street and big business. Gay people are out to destroy the family, while straight people are hypocrites who love marriages benets more than their freshly divorced spouses. When we view politics through the hobgoblins mirror, we see only caricatures, sort of like the ugly litany in the previous paragraph (for the record, the authors would like to state that some of their best friends happen to be straight). Caricatures exist because theyre a tempting shortcut: instead of doing the difcult work of trying to understand people who think differently, we make it easy on ourselves and set up a straw man whose evil justies knocking him down if not burning him at the stake. When TV becomes a screaming match, remember that the people arent yelling at each other. Theyre yelling at a caricature. The screaming heads on TV are putting on a show; the other guy didnt take an oath saying, evil, be thou my good, but he looked at facts and drew a different conclusion. His conclusion might be wrong, but it was probably arrived at honestly, and screaming at him is unlikely to change his mind and likely to harden his heart. Worse, anger grows when we feed it, so screaming leads to more screaming. It would be lovely, yet naive, to say that all we need to do to stop the screaming is to stop screaming. This simple solution doesnt work because an underlying cause of anger is the reliance on the caricature. We do not rid ourselves of caricatures by holding hands and singing Kumbaya. Caricatures are created in part because we look at others through the hobgoblins mirror; ironically enough, we can rid ourselves of them when we use that mirror on ourselves. Looking at ourselves thus is unpleasant. Do our most bitter critics have valid points? If they do, we must overcome them. Selfcriticism is painful, and less fun than criticizing others, but if we do the latter without the former, we too become the caricatures. We hate it when others make uninformed, unthinking judgments of us, but we easily do it to others just because its easy. When we assume the worst about people with whom we disagree, we caricature ourselves. With our friends and people we love, we are quick to attempt to try to see how they might see the world when they do things we dont understand. We are usually less understanding with political adversaries. As soon as we begin to hurl accusations of bad faith around, we stop ourselves from understanding others and make it harder for them to care enough to understand us. People with different opinions from us are not caricatures, and should not be treated as such. In a strange sense, we become invisible when were caricatured. Someone looks at a person and based on a caricature makes a series of assumptions: if gay, then promiscuous and liberal and ighty; if conservative, then stodgy and rich and straight; and so on. The rst step to stopping the politics of caricature is not to become horrible caricatures ourselves. Its hard work and less rewarding than a gig as a screaming head but whoever said that being gay or political was going to be a lucrative cinch? Others will treat us badly, but when we overcome the temptation to caricature others, we make it harder to be ourselves caricatured. And when others stop seeing caricatures and start seeing us at our best, we might even change minds and hearts.

Theyre both gay, theyre both giving holiday show tours, theyre both playing D.C., theyre both also playing Baltimore, theyre both known for irreverent and raunchy humor and love lampooning societal norms and without even knowing the Blade has paired them together for a roundup, one even mentions the other out of the blue during a phone interview this week. Ben Schatz, who plays Rachel in the Kinsey Sicks (theyre at the Patterson tonight in Baltimore), makes a pun when describing their act.
Were not watered down at all, Schatz says. We might be John Water-ed down, but thats it. Schatz admits Waters, wholl be at the Birchmere Sunday then Baltimores Lyric on the 21st, is a comedic hero. Because hes so unapologetic, Schatz says. He does what he thinks is funny and it attacks who it attacks. So many performers, theyre demographically based, they cater to a particular crowd. We just do the material we nd interesting, funny, provocative and challenging and theres almost nobody who isnt bothered by some of it. Theres no ostensible connection to the two shows and interviewing Waters on a media blitz in mid-November and Schatz, who wearily phones from Puerto Vallarta Monday night where he just landed and called at his publicists behest despite being totally wiped out, is a study in contrasts. Both are happy to roll with whatever comes up. Sure, we get in several questions about their respective shows, but its also fun to dart around especially with Waters and try to excavate some topical gems that havent been covered ad nauseum. The mans been interviewed so much, he has his own volume just out in the Conversations with

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST PERSON TO TELL? I came out in 93. I told most everybody close to me in the span of a week. Once the door was open, I just wanted to y. It was such a high and a relief, I wanted to share my joy with everybody. My life took a sudden U-turn, and I just felt so great and happy and free. Hardest to tell were my parents. I told them while driving them home from National Airport. My mothers famous rst words from the backseat were: Are ya, honey? WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO? Pedro Zamora. He was such an inspiration on Real World. I was (and still am) a big fan of the show and his persona had such a big impact on me a representation of a gay man that I could relate to and be inspired by. So much of what I thought it meant to be gay at the time was negative and scary. He was the exact opposite of that. Condent and sexy and proud. That had a big inuence on me and how I could imagine myself living. That is how I wanted to be if I ever was courageous enough to come out myself. WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT? I dont go out much anymore, but I always LOVED Tracks most especially the Madonnarama nights. I remember in high school Tracks had such this mystique. It was the place to go if you wanted to be rebellious. You would shop at Commander Salamander and dance at Tracks. Of course I never had the courage to go until I was in college. DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING. Small and casual. Close friends and lots of laughter. WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? Freedom of any and every kind.

WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS YOU MOST? Gays arent capable of long-lasting, loving relationships. WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT MOVIE? Jossi & Jeager a movie with small moments and an amazing ending. It will inspire me forever. WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED SOCIAL CUSTOM? Lifeguards wearing suits. They are usually so sexy, they should work naked. WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU MOST COVET? Meeting and working with photographer Bruce Weber. I think I would die of excitement. I discovered his work when I was 14 and its had an enormous inuence on me ever since. To meet him and work with him would be my ultimate dream. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN AT 18? That coming out would be great. That it would all work out well and that life is really exciting and fun as a gay man. WHY WASHINGTON? I grew up close by in Bethesda so it was only natural that I would move into the city as an adult. I love living in a gay neighborhood. The whole vibe is just perfect.

Artist Dave Peterson was ready to branch out on his own. After 15 years working for Be As You Are in Georgetown, he started his own design company in September 2007. I really wanted to be on my own and have control over my work, the 43-year-old Rockville, Md., native says. Now he sells his T-shirts and screen prints in local shops such as Caramel on U Street and Trohv in Takoma Park and Baltimore. An exhibit of his work just opened this week at Buzz Bakery & Lounge in Alexandria, Va. (901 Slaters Lane). It will be up through the end of January. Or look for his whimsical, pun-heavy drawings and quips at branddave.com. Peterson says his simple, crudely drawn gures are intentional. Theyre supposed to just be simple and funny, he says. But that doesnt mean theyre slapped together quality control is important, he says. Its the reason hes gradually getting into other formats like key chains or mugs. He launched a line of greeting cards in September. The screen prints, especially, take care to execute. Roughly 36 by 24 inches in size, Peterson scans his drawings many of the same ones he uses on his T-shirts and prints them out on wood at the Corcoran in Georgetown. He says the results, which form a sort of stencil on the wood, work well for his brand of art. Peterson also dabbles in photography and does some freelance design work on the side. Hes lived in the Dupont/Logan area since 93 and still has family in Rockville. He and boyfriend Hex Talastas have been together four years and live at Logan and 14th with their dog, Remi, a Lab. Peterson enjoys movies, hiking, baking and going for walks with Remi at Rock Creek Park in his free time.

Greene joins Chorus for weekend shows

The Gay Mens Chorus of Washington has its annual holiday show opening tonight at Lisner Auditorium (730 21st St., N.W.) and continuing through Sunday. Ancient music specialists in recital this weekend

Signatures Hairspray adept and entertaining but distanced from source material

production is relatively intimate and incessantly entertaining. Per usual, Schaeffer has brought together an able creative team. Karma Camp and Brianne Camps vigorous choreography reads like a slice from a great 60s dance party. John Kalbeisch is the musical director and pianist Jenny Cartney conducts a top-notch nine-piece orchestra. The witty, colorful costumes are by Kathleen Geldard and set designer Daniel Conway provides a gritty, midnight blue Baltimore streetscape dominated by a faded advert for Ultra Clutch Hairspray so much better than the New York productions Day-Glo explosion. A talented mix of familiar and new faces comprises the 25-person cast including bigvoiced Carolyn Cole as the indomitable, bubbly Tracy. Sherri L. Edelen is wonderfully corrupt as villainess Velma Von Tussle, the TV shows racist producer. Lynn Audrey Neal plays both the butch gym teacher and the butch but tap dance-loving jail matron. Nova Y. Paytons Motormouth Maybelle brings down the house with a powerful rendition of the heartfelt spiritual I Know Where Ive Been. Lauren Williams is terric as goony Penny, Tracys loyal best friend who, despite the hysterical prejudices of her tyrannical mother (Neal again), nds love with African-American teen Seaweed (the excellent James Hayden Rodriquez) and blossoms into a happy and fashionable checkerboard chick.

Hairsprays chubby heroine Tracy Turnblad never set out to be an activist. She just wanted to dance on TV. Like a lot of teens, Tracy is into pop music, cute boys and the latest fashion trends which, in 1962 Baltimore, means big hair. But more than anything shed like to be a regular dancing on The Corny Collins Show (think American Bandstand). Despite being overweight, Tracy realizes her dream and emerges as a breakout star. Not content to make inroads exclusively in size inclusiveness, she pushes for the show to integrate Tracy wants her new black friends (from whom she learns the latest moves) to be on air every afternoon and not just once a month on Negro Day. Risking her newfound fame, she leads a protest against the TV stations racist policies and nds teen romance in the process. Based on gay auteur John Waters same-titled 1988 lm (see our Waters interview on page 33), the multiple Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray is an anti-segregation story with a good beat you can dance to. Marc Shaiman, the shows composer and its co-lyricist with his musical and life partner Scott Wittman, have drawn inspiration from early 60s pop and R&B, but the high energy and heartwarming score is still distinctly Broadway. Highlights include Good Morning Baltimore, Welcome to the 60s and You Cant Stop the Beat. Admirably staged by Signatures gay artistic director Eric Schaeffer, the

Its practically impossible not to gain weight over the holidays. But if you want to get back into your tight jeans, the local LGBT sports groups have plenty of opportunities to help you get moving. The Adventuring Outdoors Group, whose focus is hiking and recreational biking, is hosting its 14th annual Sugarloaf Solstice/ Poetry Hike on Sunday. Its a moderate circuit hike of about 7 miles with a 1,700-feet elevation gain to a series of peaks on top of Sugarloaf Mountain near Frederick, Md. Members will stop at the scenic White Rocks overlook to enjoy the view, have lunch and share favorite poems in honor of the passing of another year. They will meet at 10 a.m. at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station for carpooling or you can drive directly there. On Jan. 1, the Adventuring Outdoors Group is hosting the Great Falls Hike. The starting point will be at the historic Great Falls Tavern where they will head downstream to the Falls Overlook and stop for lunch. They will meet at 11 a.m. at the Tenleytown Metro Station on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue for carpooling or you can drive directly there. Lambda DanceSport is offering classes every Wednesday and Sunday at the Church of the Pilgrims Fellowship Hall near Dupont Circle. Another plus: the third-row seat is large enough for adults, not just children (as with most midsize crossovers). Holidays can be an extremely stressful time of year. If youve been cheated on during the holiday season, you know that it is extra hurtful to experience this when so many other emotions are present. The holidays are meant to be a joyous time and many are lucky to have a safe, healthy, happy holiday. For others, everything negative that could happen does happen. Why does cheating occur more frequently during the holidays? The short answer is there are lots of reasons. The holiday season is a time many people reect on their life and feel a void or insecure about certain areas of their life and relationship. Being depressed about the current state of your life can drive many to act impulsively to feed the anxiety within, leading to cheating. Facing those voids in your life is challenging for anyone, regardless of your relationship status. A quick x (e.g. sex or alcohol/drug abuse) makes you feel better for the moment but unfortunately, quick xes rarely x anything and are usually negative or detrimental to your already fragile psyche. A quick x often involves indelity and during the holidays, for some, releasing stress means drinking or drug use, leading to bad decisions. New Years Eve often involves goal setting and resolution making, which is stressful to many. Releasing this stress is easy to do when it involves impulsive shopping,
eating, drinking, using drugs or nding sex. Another common reason cheating happens frequently during the holidays is because sometimes your partner accidentally ignores you. (S)he may be invited to more holiday parties than you, so in turn you feel neglected and might turn to others for affection. Feeling less popular than your partner can lead to jealousy and animosity between you. Then the revenge attitude appears, potentially leading to someone being unfaithful. John Waters Interviews, edited by James Egan covers the years 1965 to 2011 and, ironically, arrives at the Blade ofce the day the Waters interview is scheduled. We start with that. Im very proud [of the book], Waters says. I havent read them. Its like listening to your own voice when you do voiceovers on a lm. I dont do that either. But yes, Im very proud to be part of that series. I have a lot of the other books theyve done. Im doing an event at USC. I dont sign it because its not really my book to sign, but I am helping to promote it. And is its arrival today coincidental? I dont believe in divine providence, he says. I believe in Divine, but I dont believe in divine providence. I dont really believe in karma either. I know so many wonderful people who have died unfairly and I know other people who are the biggest assholes you can imagine and theyre still doing great, so I dont know. I do believe in fate. I believe in genes. I believe in mental health. But I dont think life is fair at all. I mean basically its conspiring to get us from the moment were born. Waters, whos said in other interviews that economic woes and lack of backing have kept him from lmmaking in recent years, is well into the holiday spirit even though, at the time of our conversation, it wasnt yet Thanksgiving. Its all part of his Christmas obsession, which hes used as fodder for his annual John Waters Christmas tour the last near decade. Christmas cards? Oh God, yes, Waters says. Ive been making my own for the last 25 or 30 years. And if I ever see anybody selling it on eBay, they get cut off. I send out a ton. About 2,000. Im about halfway through signing them now. And I dont believe in e-mail Christmas cards. I mean come on, you cant mail your own cards at the post ofce? Whats up with that? And now theyre thinking of not even having mail on Saturdays? Whats that about? Waters says he gets a lot in return because people want to stay on his celebrated list. He keeps about 20 of the best each year, the rest are recycled. Theres no tree in his house. He always puts lights up on the Divine statue and the electric chair his trademark decorative
accents but not until about the week before Christmas. Hes busy touring his show until then. And what does this self-professed Christmas fanatic think of others who take the holiday to extremes? He says its OK to leave Christmas decorations up all year as long as one uses a real tree. Because then its sure to look hideous, he says. Ive never seen anybody do that with a live one, but I think it would be quite funny to have the needles everywhere on the oor in the dead of summer. And is it tacky to decorate before Thanksgiving? Is Waters offended by Christmas creep? He says he nds good taste far more obnoxious than creep or excess. Its not so much when, its the how, he says. If you decorate with no fun or make it too Hallmark-y, then I think yeah, you can do it too early. But if its done with humor or irony, I think you can do it anytime. I hate those tacky decorations, those big inatable ones although theyre kind of funny when you see them, like in Baltimore, people will go around and puncture them so you have the three wise men lying in a puddle on the lawn. I think thats really great.

FHA loan limit increase benefits sellers and buyers

Hopeful purchasers now have more options; more players in the game will ensure good sale prices

Just in time for the holidays, the FHA (Federal Housing Administration) loan limit increase back to $729,750 from the $625,500 limit that existed prior to the mortgage crisis and for about half of 2011. The limit means a lot in our area, where the median housing price is near the top in the nation. Since a greater percentage of our homes are sold in the $500,000700,000 price range than in most of the rest of the country, the limits will be of particular benefit to our region. Sellers will have a greater support to maintain their homes value since more buyers will be qualified to buy their home and therefore demand will be greater. And buyers will be able to qualify for more properties since the limit will increase. Since FHA only requires a down payment of 3.5 percent and has rates that are often better than those of conventional loans, it has become an increasingly important part of the home buying and selling process. While there is a 1 percent funding fee and mandatory PMI (private mortgage insurance) requirements for five years for buyers who take advantage of the program, it has become a way for homebuyers to enter the market with less capital than is required by conventional made with $70,150, or 8.8 percent down at full price. Simple supply and demand dictates that with more buyers (who are not just willing, but also able), prices will stay steady or increase. Our market continues to be strong and reliable, and investing in real estate in our area has become a favored way to build long-term financial security. The reversion to our recently high limits will only continue to benefit our local economy specifically home buyers and sellers as long as it is in place.

Purchasing a home with less personal investment was a key factor in the mortgage and housing crisis that FHA loans are meant to help combat, but lending requirements and oversight have increased dramatically since the days preceding the 2008 meltdown. Gone are the so-called no-docor stated income loan programs that simply relied on a credit score (and often a poor one) and while the minimal down payment requirements of FHA loans do not ensure buyers have much of their own skin in the game, buyers may only hold one FHA loan at a time, which helps prevent the extreme overleveraging of amateur investors that contributed
to the nations foreclosure rolls. The practical impact of an FHA loan limit increase is easily felt by todays buyers and sellers. A listing of our own at $799,900 got limited interest while the loan program was reset to its pre-2009 levels, since it effectively ruled out FHA as an option (a buyer would need, $174,400 or 21.8 percent on top of the $625,500 loan to purchase the home at full price; this would make a conventional loan more attractive since it would not come with the 1 percent funding fee nor the more restrictive PMI requirement). When the limit was increased again, we instantly got two offers; one due specifically to that increase because the purchase could be
