Task 9 Target Audience Research.

. For this task, I asked 3 males and 3 females with an interest in the Indie/Folk genre what they would expect from a magazine focused on Indie/Folk artists. All members of the group were aged between 15 & 20, as this is the age I will be targeting my magazine on. I asked the group 12 questions, the results of which are summarised below. FRONT COVER: 1. What type of image would attract you to a music magazine? The image on the cover of a music magazine should be related to the genre of music that the magazine is reporting on, in this case, Indie/Folk. The image should be of a solo artist, with simplistic styling & background, as it shows that the magazine is focused on the music, rather than the image of the artist. 2. What additional features would you like to see on a magazine, e.g., sell lines? The cover should contain some sell lines, but not too many, as it may make the magazine look cheap. As well as this, the cover should contain a header & footer, showing additional things that are included in the magazine, such as interviews with popular artists of the genre, or posters. 3. What colours would be appropriate for a music magazine of this genre? A magazine based on Indie/Folk music should contain a mix of both bright & neutral colours, as this the bright colours reflect the style of music performed by Indie artists, whereas the more neutral shades reflect the Folk genre. 4. What type of language would you expect to be used on the cover? The cover should use language that comes across as friendly, so not too formal. However, the language shouldnt be too laid back, as it needs to suggest to the audience that the magazine takes music seriously. CONTENTS PAGE: 1. What images would you expect to see on a contents page? For a contents page, there should be one dominant image, accompanied by some smaller images of artists that relate to the genres.

2. How much of the page would you expect to be made up of image & text? The contents page should be an equal mix of both images and text, as it keeps the page interesting for the reader, and shows them what is in the magazine. 3. What content and features would you want from a magazine for the Indie/Folk genres? The magazine should feature interviews with artists that are big in the genres chosen. As well as this, it should offer reviews of new releases, TV shows and films, gig guides and the latest gossip, all of which should be clearly labelled with a page number, so it is easy for the reader to find. 4. What style of language should be used? The language on the contents page should be the same as the cover, friendly, but not too laid back or formal. The language used should reflect the genre, and should include terms that fans of the genres will recognise. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD: 1. What would you expect the article to be about? An up and coming artist, which the magazine thinks will be successful in the music industry. The article could include information on the artist was signed, and what influences & inspires their music. 2. What style of language should be used in the article? The language in the article should be informal, as it is an interview between the writer & artist. The language should be direct, and should address the reader. 3. Would you prefer the article to be image or text based? A mix. The double page spread should have one page containing the headline and the article, with the second page containing an image of the artist, with a pull quote from the article. The page containing the article could include some images of the artist as it keeps the readers attention. 4. What images would you like to see on the spread? An image of the artist, which reflects their style & their music. The page containing the main image should be either a medium close up, or a long shot. The page containing the article should contain some images of the artist performing.
