Surprise!
y husband turns fifty this year, and his family traditionally expects a giant surprise party when each of the eleven siblings hits the big 5-0. However, Ive already informed my in-laws that 1) my husband doesnt want a party and 2) I exhausted my party-planning abilities on our wedding reception; Ill be incapable of throwing any more parties until 2075. After all, while the moment everyone jumps out and yells Surprise! is terrific, it takes a heck of a lot of coordination, work and carefuloften sneaky planning to get there. I sometimes wonder if the angel Gabriel was accompanied by a heavenly chorus of angels shouting Surprise! to Mary. How shocked she must have been at this unexpected announcement. The Gospel tells us she was greatly troubledshe must have been confused and very afraid, not only at being chosen for such a profound mission, but also at the prospect of being an unmarried pregnant woman in a society that stoned such women to death. Yet behind this Surprise! was Gods magnificent plan. The surprise was on Mary and on usthat God would dare to become human to bring salvation to all people. Despite her initial shock and fear, Mary was open enough to trust Gods plan and speak the yes that transformed the world. Our preparations for this Great Surprise (better known as Christmas) are ending soon, yet we know the divine plan continues to unfold. God no doubt has plans to surprise uswith comfort in our pain, with a challenge for our growth, with a mission for us to undertake. Will we be open enough to say yes like Mary? And how might our yes transform ourselves, others, or even the world. JANEL ESKER sundaybulletins@ligouri.org

FAITH FORMATION CLASSES

We will be not have PSR classes on December 25th/26th and January 1st/2nd for the Christmas Holidays.
Do you have a child in 4th-8th grade? If so, give your child a chance to get involved with other Catholic youth in our parish! RSVP to any event your child plans to attend at cbarrett@standrewcatholic.com. If you would like to be added to my email list and notified of upcoming events (or last minute changes regarding event details), contact Christen Barrett at the email listed above. Many of the events need volunteers for transportation. All volunteers must have a completed volunteer packet and drivers form on file with the Archdiocese.

David wanted to do something nice for God. He lived in kingly splendor while the Ark, the sign of Gods presence among the people, was in a tent. The prophet Nathan gave him a green light, but God turned it red. God might seem downright ungrateful, but his message is clear: I am God and you are not. Humility and gratitude are humanitys proper stance before the Lord. David gets a good reminder of what God has done for him and what God will do for him. All you have came from me, God tells him, and all you will have will also come from me. Its that simple: Gods in charge, the author of our destiny. God doesnt need anything from us, not even a great temple. If and when that time comes, God will make it happen. Although God needs nothing from us, God does want something from us: obedience. Today, the virtue of obedience is rarely discussed and may be out of style, or even sound demeaning. But its God, not some human lord, asking our obedience. The almighty, eternal God who is love itself expects, and indeed demands obedience from us. Mary sets the example. She is no beaten down victim, no insecure or frightened robot blindly doing what shes told. Mary dares to ask, How can this be? But when shes told, theres nothing more to say than, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). SHARING FAITH In the face of the unknown, would you be able to say, Let it be done to me as Mary does? Is Marys assent remarkable, or just what people in the Bible do? Have you faced a situation where you had to trust God would make things come out right? If you were David, how would you feel about Gods response? Have you ever offered to do something nice for someone and been turned down? God makes it clear to David that his kingdom endures, not in a place, but in a people. Where do you see the presence, the goodness, and the love of God in your family, your parish, and your community?

WORD OF LIFE
In the eyes of the world those who are in the last stages of life are somehow diminished in their humanity and should be eliminated. We must see them through Gods eyes and recognize that each and every person is created in his image and likeness and that we are all connected to God and to each other. We are our brothers keeper and our sisters helper. Cain who forgot he was his brothers keeper ended up becoming his executioner. Thou shall not kill is Gods law and it is written our hearts by our Creator.
Cardinal OMalley, Archbishop of Boston, Homily, Red Mass, Sept. 19, 2011

POST ABORTION TREATMENT AND HEALING COLUMBARIUM PROJECT POSTPONED

We sent out a survey request seeking the parish's interest in developing a Columbarium Internment Garden in two possible areas here on our parish property. While the results so far have been evenly split, the actual number of responses have been very low. The Parish Finance Committee has endorsed this project 100%, and view this project as a potentially very attractive addition to our parish facilities. Many parishes are looking at this type of memorial garden as a reasonable alternative to other options you or your family may be considering. The prospect of having the ashes of our loved ones being perpetually interred here on the parish sacred property is indeed of interest to many of our long term parishioners. Given the many issues we all face during end of year and seasonal events, we have decided to delay this project until early 2012. We will send out a new survey the first of next year, and perhaps set up a parish hall meeting to discuss the opinions and questions you may have regarding this project. Feel free to submit any questions to the parish office, or we will have a Columbarium Committee in place by the first of the year to answer any of your questions. The architectural plan will be in the parish office for your review. PATH (Post Abortion Treatment and Healing) will be offering a Rachels Vineyard Retreat January 20th-January 22th that could lead to wholeness and healing. Please register by January 11th for the retreat. PATH also offers ongoing Bible Studies, new ones starting in January 2012. Compassionate, confidential care is available to women, men, siblings, grandparents, and friends. Contact PATH for details at 404-717-5557 (voice mail), pathmcneil@gmail.com, or visit our website at www.healingafterabortion.org.
