Student Achievement Summary 2011 Throughout the 2011 year, staff have kept the Board of Trustees regularly

informed of student achievement progress. Student reporting information presented confirmed strong achievement performance in school-wide English and Mathematics teaching. It is pleasing to note that the school continues to demonstrate high standards of student performance across all levels. Teachers completed mid-year Reports and interviews to parents on The National Standards and end-of-year reports were sent out last week. Feedback received throughout the year from parents has been positive and encouraging and we feel that parent satisfaction levels have tended to relate to the professionalism and confidence of the reporting offered. As always parents are welcome and any time to receive more in-depth information on their childs performance. Our focus is on reporting progress through whole curriculum learning experiences. This has been about broadening the curriculum focus further than Reading, Writing and Mathematics so that learning areas including Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Physical Education/Health and Technology are not marginalised. Teachers have been encouraged to use evidence of how a student meets a standard collected across a range of contexts and/or learning areas. How the students use Reading, Writing, and Mathematics in other learning areas helps form our evidence when making an Overall Teacher Judgement. Observation of student learning, learning conversations and the use of a range of formal and informal assessment tools also assist teachers to arrive at their assessment decisions. Progress data for 2011 has been collected to identify the numbers of children at Muritai who have achieved At, Above, Below or Well below the expected standards for Writing, Reading and Mathematics and this progress data will again be reported in the Annual Report to the Community and Ministry of Education. Parents will shortly be able to view the Annual Report section of the 2012 Charter on the schools website. This will incorporate the 2011 Achievement data. Reading Survey Overall, the school achieved another pleasing result. Ninety-four per cent of our children were reading at or above their chronological age. Areas of interest arising out of the 2011 Student Achievement results are:1.

The Board, in its Charter, aims to increase the number of children achieving above the national standard. The school returned figures 65% reading, 46% in writing and 47% in math of children consistently performing above the national standard. National Standards is still in its infancy and an area which continues to be a challenge is the placement of children who fall between the standards at time of data collection. The width of the nationally set criteria means that many children may be in some areas at the standard but can also be below or even above the standard, depending on their grasp of specific concepts.

2.

3. Many children who have learning disabilities, particularly those working with Sarah Richardsons learning support group, have strived to do their very best to improve their learning, and their efforts and improvements should not to be discounted for placing below or at the standard. They should be praised for their application.
