4. To develop concern for the less fortunate members of society. The College experienced great demand for admission in all streams. Admission was conducted according to the rules of the government and merit was given top priority. However, the college did not reject admission on the basis of social and economic status of the student. Various scholarships promoted by the government for economically and socially weak students were meticulously used by the college to encourage education among them. In addition to these scholarships there were many private organizations that encouraged education by providing financial support to deserving students. The Alumni association and many members of the 20
faculty supported deserving poor students. The Annual Health Checkups held in the year helped the economically backward students to avail of facilities that are not easily available to them elsewhere. 5. To develop good leaders. NCC (Navy): Training is imparted to the cadets on every Saturday. As per the guidance of the NCC Directorate Cadets are sent to various training camps. During the academic year 2010-11 our cadets took part in CATC training camp and participated in Firing, Volleyball, Football and other competitions and won prizes. Our cadets won the prize in Drill. Special NSS camp was organized from 18-01-2011 to 24-01-2011 at The Pyramid Valley International Bandemarasandra. We are proud that the college is adjudged as the Best NSS Unit by the Department of Youth Services and Sports. Dr. C.B. Annapurnamma is adjudged the Best Programme Co-ordinator.
NSS SPECIAL CAMP Report of NSS Special Camp (2010-2011): Pyramid Valley, Bandemarasandra Village, Harohalli Hobali, Kanakapura Taluk, Ramanagara District. (18-01-2011 to 24-01-2011) The special NSS camp was organised by The NSS unit of National Degree college, Basavanagudi. The Place that was selected for the camp was Pyramid Valley International and since the rules clearly state the attachment of a village for the NSS camp, a nearby village named Bandemarasandra was selected for shramadhana. The First day of the camp was at the Pyramid valley it took us about 1:00 pm to reach that place. Later at 3:30 pm after lunch we had the inaugural function, which was presided over by Dr.M.Leelavathi, Principal, NDC, Basavanagudi and the Chief Guest of the function was Prof. N.V. Narasimhaiah, former Prof. of History, APS College and Member of Backward class Commission of Karnataka. He inaugurated the function and while speaking to the students he spoke of the importance of such camps, he stressed upon how such camps motivate students to develop the feeling of national integrity in them and help them build themselves. Next day, on 19-01-2011, the day started by the hoisting of NSS flag by the chief guest, Prof. P.Sundaramma, Dept of Mathematics, NDC, Basavanagudi. Later all the students went to the pyramid and were taught how to meditate. After meditation all the volunteers were divided into 4 teams which took different tasks such as hoisting and bringing down of the flag, conducting lecture programmes, cultural programmes and maintainng the implements used for shramadhana.
22
There was clear time table laid out that after the breakfast from 9:30 to 12:30 would be for shramadana and after lunch at 3:30 a lecture would be conducted. According to the timetable lectures took place two consecutive days, wherein on 19th Mr.B.G.Rudrappa, Ex-chairman, KEB, spoke effectively about harnessing energy and its future. The next day it was by Prof.K.N.Nagaraj, Prof.Madhusudhana, and Dr.H.S.Madhavarao, senior professors of Kannada, MA, NDC, Basavanagudi. Who gave a talk about how the society was depleting day by day and how we as individuals must save it. According to the laid out programme the NSS flag would be brought down by the chief guest sharply at 6:00 pm. Then every night after dinner, the time from 9pm to 10pm was meant for cultural programmes which were enjoyed by all the volunteers, Professors and staff of Pyramid Valley also actively participated in it with full energy. The shramadana that took place in the pyramid valley were the works such as cleaning the whole campus, planting of saplings, making the whole area a "Plastic Free Zone", cleaning the pyramid and helping the people in making food arrangements. On 21-1-2011 trekking was planned where in a hillock nearby was selected, which was well over 15-20 Km, though tiresome it was worth doing, As the students got an exposure of it and also learnt about so many medically important herbs and plants that were bountifully available there. NSS usually allocates only one trekking in a camp of a week but we were fortunate that we trekked for two more days as we were supposed to climb the hills to go to the selected village for shramadana. Bandemarasandra is a small village of 150 odd houses. Our NSS volunteers cleaned the water of a pond, which was polluted. They also restructured the boundary of the pond, cleaned the streets, the school and planted plants near it . They also put up a fence around those saplings for their secure growth. But the most satisfying act done to the village people was the arrangement of a free medical camp wherein top notch doctors of Bangalore had come and treated almost 100 patients. This free help checkup camp was mainly organized by an ex-student of National college named Dr.Damodar rao and along with him Dr.Kiran (Orthopedics), Dr.Jamuna (Gynecologist), Dr.Venkatesh (Ophthalmologist), Dr.Girish (Physiotherapist) and some assistant doctors were present and all the effort of these people was responsible for the success of the camp. The bonus to this camp came in the form of an attachment of "Pulse Polio Abhiyan" to this free camp by the local hospital. So, the villagers were benefitted with an array of facilities under one roof.
23
For the entertainment of villagers a cultural programme of environmental awarness in the form of splendid vernacular songs was given by "Bhomi tayiya makkalu"-Samvada Society, Bangalore, a socially responsible and caring organization. On the 23rd, the closing ritual of NSS took place at night 11:00 pm where in "Shibira Jyothi" was conducted.wherein all the volunteers gathered and sung a departure song, which was quite emotional to one and all. On the 24-1-2011 the Valedictory ceremony took place at the Pyramid valley which was conducted by Dr. C.B.Annapoornamma, camp-officer and NSS Programme Officer NDC, Basavanagudi. It was presided over by Dr.M.Leelavati, Principal, NDC, Basavanagudi. The Chief guest for the function was Dr.Sudha Kodur, Pshyciatrist(USA) who coincidently happens to be the sister of the founder of Pyramid valley, Brahmarishi Patriji.A large number of the staff of Pyramid valley and few senior Professors of National Degree College, Basavanagudi were present there. All the people wished us good fortune and prayed that the unity and brotherhood we had developed and showed them would remain with us forever. Then at 4:00pm after the ceremony and lunch we all bid farewell to the people of Pyramid valley and promised ourselves that we will follow the discipline, brotherhood and equality which we had learnt there, and carry it to our lives in our homes also. The following is a list of the special lectures held during the camp: 1.Gandhi and Vinoba- Dr. C.V. Venkatachalan, visiting professor, National College. 2.Global Warming- Professor Y. Sarvamangala, Government Degree College, Yelahankha. 3.Human Rights- Sri Malleshaiah, Advocate, Bangalore. 4.The role of women in rural development- Dr. Samatha Deshamane, Department of Sociology, Bangalore University. 5.Rural Attitudes- Dr. Siddagangamma, Kannada University, Hampi. 6.Folk lore- Sri Gollahalli, member Janapada Academy. Cultural programmes were conducted every evening after the lectures. The people of the village also presented folk programmes. The NSS wing also arranged a free dental camp by the doctors of the Government Dental College, Bangalore. The NSS students brought all the members of the village for a dental check-up. The medicines were provided by our alumni, Sri Damodar. A one- day trek was also arranged. On 24
behalf of the college, free books and toys were distributed to the primary school students. Thus, the camp helped in exposing our students to the hardships of rural life.
6. To encourage admission from all sections of society including the rural. a) Even though we are an autonomous college and enjoy sufficient freedom in the matter of admission, the college thought best to follow all the rules of the government regarding admission. These rules were strictly followed. The college had a bulk of students coming from lower middle class uneducated families and also from the mofussil areas of Bangalore. Great care was taken to see that they integrate well into our system. Special coaching classes were held for them in the local language to help them to understand their subjects better.Their grievances were attended to by the Grievance Cell and by the class teacher.
b) Accommodation is made available to students who come from far off places. Admission to the hostel is need-based giving sufficient importance to merit. This satisfies our goal of also catering to the needs of rural students. The hostel provides good quality boarding and lodging at subsidized rates. Their academic performance is monitored by the Chief Warden and two assistant resident wardens. Readmission to the hostel is denied to those who fail the examination. The exclusive library facilities help the students to keep the books in their rooms throughout the academic year.
Report of the National College Students Hostel: 2010 - 11 The National College Students Hostel started as a poor boys home nearly five decades ago. Dr.H.Narasimhaiah who was then a student of National High School was an inmate of the hostel. Some of the past inmates of the hostel are now occupying high positions in society. Silver jubilee and Golden jubilee of the hostel were celebrated in 1977 and 2003 respectively. This years Annual Day celebrations were held on 14th March 2011. c. To improve the communication skills of students. The College admits students from both urban and rural backgrounds. In order to help them, a course in communication is put into effect in the Vth and VIth Semesters. This year, we had a number of programmes in presentation, group discussion etc to improve communication. Stress was laid on expressing their own ideas about current events. Students were shown a number of pictures from magazines and journals dealing with the happenings throughout the world and were asked to respond. These programmes helped them to use the language and increase their vocabulary to meet the demands of their ideas. The Examination conducted at the end of the Semester tested the students on their ability to communicate for 80 Marks. This is a compulsory requirement of all the graduate courses.
4. To develop scientific attitude among the students. The Bangalore Science Forum and the Bangalore Social Sciences Forum operate under the aegis of our college. This is a great advantage to our staff and students who get the benefit of listening to lectures given by eminent National and International scientists. These lectures were held four times a month. They also conducted the month long Annual Science and Social Science Festivals in July and December 2010, where students participated in lectures, demonstrations and film shows. They also conducted inter- collegiate competitions in debate, essay and lecture on various science and social science topics. Students were encouraged to become members of the two forums where membership. The Bangalore Science Forum is the longest serving forum for dissemination of scientific knowledge in India. It won the National Award for the popularization of science from the Prime Minister of India. It was established in 1962. The college was a premiere science institution in Bangalore at that time.
27
During the summer of 2010, two summer science camps were held for 7 thad 10th Standard students of our National High School. Training is given to these young inquisitive minds to develop a scientific temperament. The Bangalore Science Forum also held Inter-Collegiate Science Competitions in Kannada in order to encourage learning of Science in the vernacular. This helps in an inclusive development where students coming from rural areas are not marginalized. This forum has been striving very hard in removing superstitious beliefs among the students and the general public. In order to make it convenient for the office staff, it was held between 4 and 6 pm on 24th and 25th and between 3 and 5 pm on 26th February. It was well attended with 27 members of both colleges using the opportunity. The staff from the offices was eager to learn and improve their skills in the speaking of English. 42. Healthy practices of the institution: 1. The management of the NES has always encouraged the participation of teachers in the administration of the institution. Many of our faculty members have become members of the governing body and have played a crucial role in the administration. At present three of our Staff are on the Governing Council of the National Education Society of Karnataka, Bangalore, namely Dr. A Srinivasan Prof. S .Arunachalam Dr. Y.C.Kamala 63
2. One of the healthy practices followed by the institution is to felicitate members of the faculty who retire in that year. a) Each class is under the personal care of a class teacher. She/he acts as a local
guardian and maintains a record of all the students in his/her class. They contact the parents on regular bases and discuss the progress and problems of their wards. Solutions to such problems are worked out by the class teacher in consultation with the respective parent. This information is provided to the principal regularly. b) The Warden of the hostel is responsible for the academic progress of the hostel
inmates. The performance of these students along with the marks is provided to him after each examination conducted in the college. Generally the hostel does not provide accommodation to those students who fail in their final examinations. The warden also is in close contact with the parents of the inmates of the hostel. There is a section in the library exclusively meant for the hostel inmates where they can keep books in their rooms for the entire academic year. In addition to the Chief Warden, there are two Residential wardens who are also members of our teaching faculty. c) Students who come to our college travel a long distance, sometimes from mofussil
areas. A canteen operates from 7 a.m in the morning till 6p.m. providing the students nutritious food at subsidized rates. The quality of the food is maintained as the teaching faculty uses the same facility. d) The college makes it a point to see that equal importance is given to curricular,
extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. Hence the college has an active Drama Club, Literary Club, Science Club, Humanities Club, Sports Club, Gymnasium and Photography club e) The Library is easily accessible to both students and teachers. They are encouraged
to use the library throughout the day from 10a.m to 6p.m. f) There is a homely atmosphere in the college where students can approach teachers,
administrators and the Principal at any time during the working hours. g) The Old Students Association provides information to the present students about
opportunities available for higher education and employment. They have employed a number of students in the organizations run by the former students.

h)
announced at the end of every month. Parents of students having a shortage of attendance are informed by the class teachers. Students who do not have a minimum of 75% of attendance are not permitted to take the final examination. i) The girl students who make up 40% of the student strength have an exclusive place
called the Ladies Room for reading, resting, eating etc. There is an Indoor Games section adjoining the Ladies Room for their use. There is a care- taker for the ladies room who attends to the maintenance of the room and also attends to the special problems of the lady students. Some senior lady teachers are selected to supervise the upkeep of the ladies room. j) At the beginning of the Academic year, the Principal appointed senior members of
the staff to hold charge of various activities for the students. This was done so that no activity was neglected. The staff-in-charge reported to the Principal regarding the successful completion of the activities under their supervision. Some of the important portfolios held were in the areas of Music, Drama, Gandhian Studies. Literature, Science, Student Counseling. NCC, NSS, Examination-in-Charge, Moral and Health etc. k) The Management of the National Education Society under which the college is run
consists of eminent educationists, industrialists and important men and women in public life. It is democratic, transparent and allows free access to all the members of the Institution. By convention the President of the National College Teachers Association is a member on the Managing Committee of the National Education Society. This Managing Committee deliberates on both academic and financial matters of the college. Since the teachers are represented on this committee, there was an opportunity for the teachers to convey their grievances to the Management. These meetings are held regularly by the Management. The Management also forms a Working Committee consisting of the Principal, the Vice-Principal and some members of the governing body of the NES to discuss academic issues. In this year the Working Committee approved of the many proposals sent by the Principal. l) The College Prayer, the State and National Anthem are sung by all the students
and staff in an assembly held at 10.30a.m on every working day. Attendance to this prayer meeting is compulsory. Four members of the faculty are in charge of this activity. This daily ritual has been a tradition of this college from its inception in 1945. This helps students to begin their day on a spiritual and patriotic note creating a peaceful environment in the college. 65
m)
Ragging is a menace in most colleges of higher education. The HRD Ministry and
the UGC has given strict instructions to the Principals of all colleges to eradicate ragging in their campuses and hostels. In line with this the college has an active Discipline and anti-Ragging committee consisting of all the Heads of all Departments and the Chief Warden. All junior students can air their grievances to any member of the committee. The Committee views any ragging as a serious offence which can lead to the expulsion of the student who indulges in ragging. Because of the strict stance taken by the college in this matter, there has been no instance of ragging in the college. n) There is an active grievance cell consisting of the Principal, the Warden and some Heads
of Departments. Students having any kind of grievance either academic or non-academic can approach the cell for redressal of their problems. Utmost secrecy is maintained in these matters. o) The Principal has appointed certain members of the staff to function as liaison officers to
co-ordinate with the Directorate of Collegiate Education, Joint Directorate of Collegiate Education and the Bangalore University to ensure speedy completion of the administrative work of the college. The College has any number of grievances with regard to the announcement of results, admissions and other administrative issues. Similarly a Staff member is appointed to take care of the UGC grants and ensure that it is received on time. He also keeps abreast with the various UGC programmes that our institution can avail of.

Communicative Skills. We are also planning to extend the same to other students. The Lab also envisages a training programme for the faculty of the college. The students are provided with modules in listening, presentation and interview skills. The Lab also exposes the students to functional English and Pronunciation in the Lab. The language Laboratory is also used to screen films. Apart from serving the purpose of audiovisual aid in teaching, the films are also used to direct and provide an insight to students on various themes and issues. The response from the students has also been promising. We saw the visual media as an effective medium which can further encourage the students into literature and arouse their interest as an art form in itself. All the screenings were followed by discussion, wherein we encouraged the students to actively participate and respond to the ideas and the art. Students of I Semester and III Semester Optional English are taught Language, Phonetics, and Discourse. Power Point Programmes are used to make the teaching more effective and beneficial for our students with special impetus on the students of Optional English. Projects and Seminars: Projects and seminars are an integral part of the B.A/B.Com/ B.Sc course. These are conducted after the students enter the final year of their course. Students should opt to do 2 seminars and1project. The seminar topics are of current interest. The seminar topics are selected by the department in consultation with the students. The topics are a mix of both theory and real life issues. The seminars are conducted twice a week for one hour each. The students are allotted marks in the following manner, Script-20 marks, presentation-20 marks, question and answer session-10 marks (50 marks). This has given an opportunity to the students to learn the art of speaking. Students opting for project work are put into groups of four students/group. The project topics are selected after a series of discussions. 45. Any other relevant information the institution wishes to add: The College, feeling the need to increase the number of courses, introduced two new courses. The first was an extension of our under-graduate courses in the area of Commerce (B.Com). The second was its first post-graduate course in Kannada Language & Literature. This provided an opportunity to several of our own students to pursue higher education. 71
The M.Sc, Computer Science course which commenced from the academic year 2010 was very well received as envisaged by the number of applicants. The college had to screen the applicants and select thirty four students, though the strength permitted by the University was 35. Guest faculties drawn from reputed institutions are the faculty. The proposal to start post graduate courses in Sociology, English and Economics will open more research opportunities in the arts faculty and help maintain growth of all branches of academics viz; Arts, Science and Commerce.
