ABSTRACT TITTLE: Extent of Utilization of Different Health Teaching Method and Its Perceived Effect on Patients Education in Obstetric

One of the vital roles of a nurse is being an educator by rendering health teachings. Health teaching is a learning relationship entered into by the nurse and client, in which the content and other activities are directed at providing knowledge or skills needed to meet specific health care need. In conducting health teachings, educators used different health teaching methods. The study focused on the extent of utilization of different health teaching methods and its perceived effect on patients education in Obstetric ward of Quezon Medical Center in Lucena City. First, the researchers took the patients demographic profile and educational attainment. These data were tabulated. Also, the researchers categorized the teaching methods being utilized and asked the respondents which among those methods are most often used. The teaching methods and the patients demographic profile and educational attainment were analyzed to see whether there is a significant difference between the teaching methods and the patients age and

educational attainment. The researchers sought to find out whether changes in teaching methods are taken into consideration depending on the patients age. The researchers looked into the patients perception of the health teaching given to them by the staff nurses and student nurses. The researchers wished to find out whether the staff nurses and student nurses were able to meet what was expected from them, not just as a nurse, but as a teacher imparting health teaching at the Obstetric Ward of Quezon Medical Center. The study was conducted to seventy five respondents composed of the total bed capacity of the Obstetric ward of Quezon Medical Center. They were purposively chosen to participate in the study. The researchers utilized the descriptive method of research and used survey method. Sampling technique that has been chosen was accidental non probability among obstetrical patients. The researchers got the result of demographic data which includes age and educational attainment. Majority of the respondents are within 21-27 years old bracket which constitute 36% of the total population. This means majority of the respondents belongs to young adulthood stage. While, the respondents who reached high school level constitute the highest percentage of 60% for the educational background. In terms of utilization of different health teaching methods, there are 62. 67% who used the inforamation, education and communication (IEC) materials which includes the following: print outs constitute the highest frequency of 23, f=19 in demostration, f=4 in posters, f=1 in visual aids and no student used the video films, slides and tapes. While 36.00% used lecture discussion and 1.33% used role playing. There is no significant difference on the extent of the utilization of different health teaching methods when they are group according to demographic profile which includes the age and the highest educational attainments of the respondents. According to the respondents the conducted health teaching contributed in the improvement of their health status and it was ranked as first

regarding to the effects of health teachings. Second is that the health teaching conducted has improved their literacy and they achieved independency in self-care as the third effect of the health teaching rendered to the patients. The data gathered gave out highly satisfactory results. The researchers found out that the health teaching methods utilized by the nurses and student nurse in the said ward are highly effective. The health teaching methods utilized are highly effective and reached its goal of imparting knowledge and understanding to the patients and their family members. Those knowledge, according to the gathered data, encouraged family involvement in health care and boosts ones confidence and awareness in dealing with the situation. At the end of the research, it was concluded that the teaching methods utilized are effective and it was recommended that these methods are pursued. Although there is always room for improvement, it is evident that the current system of health teaching practiced by nurses and student nurses are highly effective since the patients at the Obstetric Ward of Quezon Medical Center learns and gains what they should from the health teaching. The study recommends the following: to the student nurses, that they should enhance the application of different health teaching methods, they should also follow the guidelines and use the appropriate health teaching methods in conducting healh teaching. It is important to assess the level of literacy of the listeners to findout the appropriate ways for them to learn easily. For clinical instructors, that they should introduce different health teaching methods that can be utilized and oversee their students in planning health teachings.

For Future researchers, that they should conduct a study on the other wards about health teaching so that their methods could be evaluated as to how effective they are as perceived by patients and broaden the scope of this study and make a more comprehensive evaluation.
