FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL. 12 NO. 12 December 2011 Welcome to this edition of FIU.

How often have you said Murphys Law if something can go wrong, it will? Seems it is no longer the out for messing up it once was thanks to work by Canadian researchers who have shown how better checking and safety standards can take the Murph out of the equation. The Smithsonian might have another angle with its researchers having studied how humans separate sarcasm from sincerity. Has anybody studied the oft posed question: What can go wrong? Maybe the groups and officials meeting in Durban, South Africa, had this in mind when forming a cautious outcome to the recent COP17 Climate Change meeting. See links for these and other studies in our Articles section. All the best for the festive season and many thanks for our contributors and readers throughout the year. Thanks to our sponsors, who have helped keep FIU a free enewsletter. Kind regards Mike Smith, Editor and Director info@southem.com INTRODUCTION Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free monthly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventory and monitoring of natural resources and reaches about 22,000 natural resource specialists and other recipients worldwide. The research focus will be on addressing the challenges resulting from the competition of different demands for multiple (forest) ecosystem goods and services under changing environmental, economic and social conditions. This research is part of the EU-funded FP7 collaborative project "Future-oriented integrated management of European forest landscapes" (the INTEGRAL project). Please send your CV and a cover letter (in which you explain why you are interested in the position and why you should be selected for the position) to: Prof. Maarten Nieuwenhuis, E-Mail: maarten.nieuwenhuis@ucd.ie Post-Doc Position -Land use impact on arthropod functional biodiversity Azorean Biodiversity Group (University of Azores, Portugal) is opening a Postdoctoral position to study the dynamics of soil and canopy arthropod communities under land-use changes. The research should also enhance understanding how land use change have affected arthropod functional diversity and body-size frequency distribution and make projections about possible future trajectories. It is also expected to quantify the ecosystem services of arthropods in the different Land-Uses. Go to: http://ecologie.over-blog.org/article-land-use-impact-on-functional-biodiversity51415705.html

The information provided by MERMAID is now available in three places: the NBN Gateway for species data; the MESH webGIS for habitat data and other MNCR survey details; and the JNCC website for the latest version of the Marine Habitat Classification. http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/mermaid/ COPYRIGHT NOTICE Items headlined in Forest Information Update are drawn from a number of sources.
