RA IN CATCHMENT

TREASURE FROM THE SKY

Nobody can dispute the fact that in contemporary times water is a real treasure. On our entire planet, sources of this life-giving liquid are constantly contaminated by modern industry and agriculture.

Contemplating this situation we realize how important it is to conserve, to lter and to reuse water. In the Temple we are working with various projects to save and purify the water that we use: we have constructed our rst gray water system and we are using different techniques to hold water in the soil in our gardens (swells, mulching, terraces). Considering that we are situated in the Amazon Rain Forest we cant forget about one of the most important components and sources of water for this ecosystem- THE RAIN. Rainwater can be collected in a very simple way. The only things that are necessary are rooftops and drainpipes connected with big water container.

Iquitos rainfall statistics (inch/month)

Iquitos has one of the highest rates of rainfall of all Peruvian cities. In the rainy season (between october and may) the average rainfall is between 9 and 12 inches per month. Even during dry season, this level doesnt drop bellow 6 inches per month.

.
To ll these buckets one worker has to carry water from the pond for 4,5 hours daily... we could save this work by running our rain catchment system...

Why do we need rain catchment at the temple?
Running water in the showers
We have three shower rooms near the Maloca. Our workers have to ll buckets with water from the pond at least three times a day. For one worker it is 4,5 hours of work daily. This water could be easily replace by water collected from the rooftops on the top of the hill near the dining room. From there we could transport it by pipes into the shovers using only the force of gravity.

Environmental education of local people

The other aim of this project is to educate local people about how using simple techniques can make their lives better. The rst step to achieve this goal is to involve local workers in the process of constructing the rain catchment system in the Temple property. After this we will invite people from local villages for a short presentation and group discussion about this topic. Finally, we would like to help them run their own systems in the village.
These rooftops cover almost 3300 square feet of our land...
...using this area even in the dry season (june, august) we can collect more than 12000 gallons of water per monththats almost 400 gallons per day which is enough for our showers, eventually even for washing dishes in the kitchen...

P LA N

The whole rain catchment system that we want to create is a very simple construction. There is a 12 meter difference between the level of the Tambos, and the shower room. This means that we can use the natural force of gravity to drive the water from the hilltop down to the shower rooms.
