OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE ANALYSIS OF THERMAL POWER PLANT CASE STUDY OF JABANA II 1.1.

BACKGROUND Thermal power is the more costly alternative and is produced by means of fuel, heavy fuel and methane gas. Rwanda thermal power plants are currently JABANA I power plant (7.8 MW), JABANA II power plant (using heavy fuel to produce 20 MW) and Methane gas extracted from Lake Kivu (4 MW) [1]. Aggreko rental power generators, which were installed during the energy crisis of 2004, have been reduced from 15 MW to the current 7 MW. And those thermal power plants provide about 40.3 MW [1]. Hydropower is basically produced by means of water dams turning turbines, which in turn produce electricity. Those are NTARUKA, MUKUNGWA, GISENYI, GIHIRA hydropower plants s producing a total capacity of 26.5 MW and are located in the northern and southern parts of the country [1]. Additional 16.3 MW are injected from foreign supply. RUSIZI I (substation located on Rwanda territory in CYANGUGU) and RUSIZI II (substation located in BUKAVU, DRC and supplying energy from SINELAC - SOCIT INTERNATIONAL DES GRANDS LACS). The current electrification rate for Rwanda stands at 9% with 142 697 connections. It is planned that by 2012, this will have reached 16% with at least 350,000 connections nationwide [1]. RUSIZI III is an additional power plant of SINELAC, a third of its production will be supplied to Rwanda [1].

1.2. PROBLEM STATEMENT In our project we can find some problems where we will focus for finding our main objective and specific objectives, in case of problem statement we can talk about some problems of energy in our country of RWANDA where we can enumerate the following problem: Availability of qualified technical and professional personal Specifically made instruments/tools for professional maintenance. Professional and equipment safety How availability of special communication gagged in a noisy environment 1.3. OBJECTIVES OF STUDY 1.3.1. GENERAL OBJECTIVES The purpose of study is show how the operation, maintenance can increased. The purpose of reducing the problem of energy in our country, and the environment will be kept in good health.

1.3.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of this study are: To identify the operational and maintenance difficulties of thermal power plant JABANA II. 1.4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY In this research study, we shall talk about method used to generate the power from thermal power plant, the use of some devices, its advantages and electric power plant stability, and the importance of our research study will help EWSA to produce power continuously because of our operations and maintenances of thermal power plant. 1.5. THE SCOPE OF STUDY Our project which is focused on operations and maintenances analysis of thermal power plant case study JABANA II (20MW) will help us to determine how thermal power plant can be operated and maintained.

1.6. LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study is limited to the operations and maintenance analysis of thermal power plant where it is applied, especially in our project, this is limited to JABANA II (20MW), which is thermal power plant in RWANDA and is controlled by EWSA.
