1.Introduction- WVI
Founded in 1950, as Christian relief and development
organization
In 2003, WVI:
served 100 million people
Worked 99 countries
Largest child sponsorship organization =Over 2.2 million
sponsor children
Raised $1.25 Billion for its work
Employed 20,000 staff members
The low level of social and economic development is also reflected in the
structure of the economy, in which agriculture constitutes about 50 per cent of
GDP and around 85 per cent of employment.

Agriculture: 52.3% (17%)
Industry: 12% (31%)
Services: 35.7% (53%)
Social service coverage: very low i.e.
Health services =51%
Safe water =32%
Sanitary facilities =19%
Primarily enrollment ratio=50% for boys and 45% for girls (2002)
To meet some of the felt needs of the people (mainly to severe famines & poverty) =Local & International
NGOS began 1960s
The number of NGOs increased=Currently 458 NGOs are registered with the Ministry of Justice (242 local
and 216 international) .The sector focus= a shift from relief to development especial emphasis on food
Security
Currently 1200 projects =agriculture, health and other rural development sectors =Budget (1996-2000)
=$ one billion=B/n 1/5 to ¼ international aid resource mobilized by NGOs
