Essay: English has become an international language and there are more and more countries it as the mother tongue. In Vietnam, English is a foreign language and the Ministry of Education and Training decides that it must be used to teach a number of subjects in all the gifted high schools by 2020. Obviously there will be some difficulties for students to absorb in specialist knowledge and for teachers to convey them to students in English, not including the financial problems that schools will face. Preparations for facilities and knowledge are what the schools should make to solve these difficulties. First to be mentioned, English is still a hard subject to learn. Students in developing cities and poor towns are not equipped with enough modern facilities in academic study. Poor towns can not provide them with learning tools and lack modern teaching methods. Students are still not taught practical skills such as speaking. The learning of English is improved gradually. But somehow they still have problems reaching the advanced degree. On the other hand, using English to teach other subjects means that they have to learn much more hard to fulfill their tasks. Just take an example of it, when a student who is majored in Physics will have to learn terminologies in English, which is a big problem to them. Apart from that, they also have to express their ideas in English although this is what an English-majored student does. Therefore, in addition to learn Physics they must spend much time transferring them into English, which is very challenging, especially for students who are not good enough in Physics. In short, students in gifted high schools will face many difficulties learning their specialist subjects. Secondly, teachers also have many problems. They devote all their life to teaching a subject, to inspiring their students with their enthusiasm so if they are not English teachers, teaching their subject in English is a big problem. Furthermore, as we know, studying a language when you are still a child is most efficient. The ability to absorb in new languages is worsening through ages. Like students, they will also have to research bilingually and speak English during their lectures. Obviously, teachers get caught up in many difficulties in teaching. On the other hand, gifted high schools can face financial problems. They have to provide students and teachers with the most convenient facilities. Everything must be translated into English; therefore (,) even librarians and clerks must learn some English. Equipment must be modernized; textbooks must be republished, and so on. Hence, schools also have difficulties adapting to this new method of teaching and learning. However, any problems have their solutions. It is undeniable that along with the development of the Information Technology and international economic integration, each individual must learn English for his future. In 10 years time, we must be well-prepared for this. Students should be bilingual in learning their major and they could find many interesting points such as the notations of quantity in mathematics, physics or chemistry, etc. Getting used to using English in everyday life will enable them to easily keep pace with their colleagues if they want to study abroad. Schools should recruit foreign teachers as well as foreigners to supervise students. Moreover, they should invest more and more in quality training for young teachers who are more likely to learn English efficiently with their youth and enthusiasm. Briefly, students, teachers and schools must prepare themselves for the future of using English as the international language. To sum up, it is difficult for students and teachers to use English to teach and learn and it causes financial problems. However, learning English is primarily vital for students to be successful in future life as well as the development of our country. Therefore, we should try to learn bilingually, adapting knowledge to everyday life and invest in quality training for teachers.
