Teachers use of L1

Our teacher name is Betl NVER. She is a young teacher. She has worked as a teacher for 17 years. She graduated from Atatrk University in ERZURUM. She studied English literature in university. And then she started to work as a teacher. We observed her when she was teacher 6th grade. This year she takes this class. And she says that the class level is very poor. Students dont have any background. So she compelled to teach English. What she says in English , they cannot understand what she wants to mean. She is very attractive teacher. She wants to be a good teacher. But in my opinion she gets rid of something. Sometimes lesson is very boring. There is not any materials. She never uses real object or colorful , attractive materials. There is not a projector in the class. So she cannot use any video or etc. On the other hand in my opinion teacher and students can prepare some colorful material according to object with together. She only use-worksheet. So l think students can not motivated lesson. English lesson is not attractive for them. As a teacher , my students should see English lesson different from other lesson. Because learning a language is different from learning math , for example. Class is poor and teacher knows it. But she doesnt show any afford to solve this problem. She only complains us students level. She comes class, teaches object and then give worksheet. The school name is Abdurrahman Meryem Gizerler lkretim . it is in the city center. t is location is very good. And school is new. It has enough students. Classroom condition is good but not enough. Desks are new; but they still use blackboard. There isnt computer and projector in the class. This situation has a negative effect especially for English lesson. And l wants to indicate schools teachers. They seen very tired. They behave to get rid of everything. Sometimes they dont have any knowledge about each other. For example manager can go out without giving information about others. You can not find any authorized in the school. One day I waited in the garden l saw very bad thing. A teacher kicked his students and shouted him in front of a lot of people. There were also parents. Also l heard that the student didnt say anything. He only asked a question.

Why teacher use l1 ;


Teacher use nearly l1 in all lesson. Students level is very poor. They cannot make sentences and cannot understand anything if you say in English. Teacher teaches object using of L1. they only use L2 reading in the blackboard or the book. For example ; explaining grammar 45 Giving example Solving any problem Taking attendance Making grading Giving homework Explaining structure Talking her students about any situations Giving permissions

If we put the order number of reasons for teachers use of L1 ; 45 times for explaining grammar 35 times for explaining activities 33 times for discipline 30times for giving permission 25times for finding solutions for classroom problems 20times for giving homework and controlling old homework 15 times for classroom daily activities. Why the teacher use of L1; The students level is very poor. They dont have enough background to understand in English. So the teacher have to use L1 in the lesson. She has to use L1 for explaining grammar rules. She need to teach subjects in using of L1. Firstly, she says in Turkish than write in English at the end she reads what she write in English. If a student has a problem , s/he uses L1. so the teacher has to answer in L1. sometimes she try to explain in English , but then she realizes that the students doesnt understand anything. And then she translates what she says. Students can give English samples about the subject. They can write also make write in the blackboard. The classroom situation is not adequately. The teacher can not use video or type. So the can not make listening activities. Sometimes in the class there are some discipline problems. The teacher say in English .students can understand or guess what she says so as to her voice tone and mimic. But they want to express their problem they use l1. so the teacher listen them than answer l1. because they can not understand l2. the teacher use L2 mostly classroom daily activities. Because she always use same sentences. So students get used to these sentences. They can understand what she wants to say. Also they can answer in L2. teacher used to ask old homework in the L2. she try to use English as much as possible. But the level of students dont let her to use much. She can not use teach something new or complicated situations. She can use simple sentences. And also she can use simple structure in L2.

If l would the teacher of that class of students, a little things have been different. Students level is very poor. They dont know nearly anything. Their old teacher didnt give them enough information. So my task wouldnt be so difficult. Firstly maybe l try to make my lesson more enjoyable. If students seen my lesson is more attractive, different, and enjoyable; they can easily be motivated. I give task my students. l prepare colorful materials. And l make different activities. Also l give importance speaking and writing. My opinion you cant separate a language. If you want to teach it, your students also should know reading, writing, and speaking. Only knowing grammar is not enough. Now l start to work as a teacher. My students are young. Their level is also poor. l dont have projector. so I can not use video. Furthermore we can not make listening activities. Because students dont responsibility listening activities. They only want to solve questions. And my manager says me is students

can give right answer this is enough. I want to teach a lot of thing but I cant. My students and manager see my this afford needless. So I can only teach grammar. I try to teach more effectively. we solve a lot of questions. I make exams and quiz. I have limited time. I try to give information as much as possible.
