A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Our trip to Gracie Mansion was a resounding success! Nearly 30 seniors toured the Mayors official residence. Though the tour was Moriahs Chanukah gift to our seniors, we would like to thank Mr. Henry Rieser and Mrs. Fanny Lowenthal for their donations to help defray the cost. I am pleased to report that through a generous grant from the Manhattan Borough Presidents Borough Needs Program, we have officially opened our Enhanced Computer Lab and Technology Playground. This program is a work in progress, and as the months go on, we will use your feedback to acquire more devices for you to become acquainted with in a relaxed and pressure-free environment. We have already added along with our laptops - a Kindle e-reader (which provides our clients with a subscription to Readers Digest Magazine, along with several e-books) and an iPad. I am also happy to announce that Moriah has applied to be part of New Yorks CityBench program. The CityBench program is an initiative to increase the amount of public seating on New York Citys streets. The Department of Transportation is installing attractive and durable benches around the city, particularly at bus stops and in areas with high concentrations of senior citizens. These benches will make streets more comfortable, especially for those who are older and disabled. It will certainly be nice for those of you who like to wait outside for the transportation van each day! Many clients have asked me to pass on their gratitude to those who donate printed books and magazines for their reading pleasure. Mr. & Mrs. Sam Dorfman, Mrs. Myrta Malave and Mrs. Shirley Auslander are some of our more regular suppliers. We are also grateful to the Dorfmans for their donation of the Chanukah candles which were used at the Center. Looking forward to personally greeting you at the Center,

Shuli Gutmann

Houdini not only escaped from physical constraints and potentially deadly situations but was himself an exemplar of the American dream, escaping the past and succeeding in the new world. Born Ehrich Weiss, Houdini made an immigrants getaway from Budapest to Appleton, Wisconsin to New York. Attracted to the bright lure of the big stage, he joined the circus, ultimately arriving on the national and international scene. Houdini's career and performances embodied key elements of the American archetype: hard work, ingenuity, modernity, and renewal.

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS (tune from the Sound of Music)
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails and new dental fittin's Bundles of magazines tied up with string, These are a few of my favorite things. Cadillacs, cataracts, hearing aids, glasses, Polident, Fixodent, false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings, These are a few of my favorite things. CHORUS: When the pipes leak, When the bones creak, When the knees go bad, I simply remember my favorite things, And then I don't feel so bad. Hot tea and crumpets, And corn pads for bunions, no spicy hot food and no food with onions, Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring, These are a few of my favorite things. Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinning, Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinning, As we won't mention our short shrunken frames, When we remember our favorite things. CHORUS: When the joints ache, When the hips break, When the eyes grow dim, THEN I REMEMBER THE GREAT LIFE I'VE HAD, AND THEN I DON'T FEEL SOOOOO BAAAAD
