Stained glass artist, Terri
Wright-Knapke, recently
replicated the gothic style
windows in the new addition
of the Coldwater Holy
Trinity Catholic Church. The
new stained glass windows
were completed to match
the existing windows in the
sanctuary. The new addition
houses an elevator going to
the basement and upper church
entrance. A new restroom
has also been added for the
use of parishioners. This
work was completed by Rose
Construction and Electric Inc.
Trent Severt, student of the
Coldwater Photography Class,
photographed the window as a
class project.
The glass used for the
project was obtained from
the Kokomo Art Glass Co in
Kokomo, Indiana. Kokomo
granite catspaw was used on
the borders, Kokomo Ripple in
the center while the remainder
is granite glass.
Terri works out of her studio
located west of Coldwater.
Her business, Stained Glass by
Terri, has been in existence in
Mercer County since 1998. Her
installations are in homes,
businesses and churches as far
away as California and New
York. She is a self-taught artist
and worked in the Lima area
before coming to Coldwater.
Terri taught at the Lima Apollo
Career Center, Art Space and
with the Coldwater Middle
school gifted classes.
A leaded stained glass
window or other object is
made of pieces of glass, held
together by lead. Terris work
is the Tiffany copper foil
method, which is an alternative
method that replaces the lead
came with cooper foil. This
enables a creation of three-
dimensional works as well as
more intricate designs with
flat panels. This is commonly
called the Tiffany works style
as Louis Tiffany invented this
glasswork.
The technology for making
glass dates back at least 5,000
years and some form of stained
glass was used in European
Christian churches by the third
or fourth century a.d. In the
United States, it was Louis
Comfort Tiffany and John La
Farge who began working with
stained glass near the end of the
19th century. Tiffany was best
known for his Tiffany Lamps.
Tiffany glass is coveted yet
today by many.

Windows Replicated by Local Artist
Instead of the usual gift exchange for the Christmas Season the
Mercer County Engineer, the Mercer County Commissioners and their
respective staffs have chosen to donate the money normally spent
on gifts to charity. The Center for Neurological Development was
randomly chosen. The Center offers free of charge therapy to brain
and spinal cord injured children and adults. The Center operates on an
out-patient basis only, Monday thru Friday. They receive no state or
federal assistance. All proceeds are from the private sector and are tax
exempt. All monies received are used for equipment purchases, repairs,
therapy devices, training materials, general operating expenses, etc. A
total of $310.00 was donated to them to use as needed. Merry Christmas
and Happy Holidays to everyone in Mercer County.

Hildred Betz, will celebrate her
birthday on January 4, Hildred will
be 101 years old. She is cared for
by her son John. I visited with her
on Christmas Eve and she is doing
well. She would appreciate getting

Previous managers of the
Vonderharr Meat Market, Darin
Sain and LaDonna Williams entered
a plea of no contest to charges
of missing meat and fowl tasting
meat from over 70 customers of
the market. A jail sentence was
suspended and nearly half of the
complaints were not honored.
The defendants agreed to pay the
customers with honored claims
a total sum of nearly $7,000.00.
The highest claim awarded to a
customer was under $400. The
current owner of the Vonderharr

Place ingredients in saucepan
and bring to a boil and then simmer
for 10 minutes uncovered to blend
the flavors. Place in crock pot set
on low setting while serving. Can
be made ahead of time and stored
in the refrigerator until ready to
serve. Remove the cloves before
serving.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

Once again, its time to make some New Years resolutions. This year, in addition to hitting the gym, learning
that second language and getting better organized, why not also consider a few financial resolutions?
What types of resolutions might you consider? Here are a few suggestions:
* Contribute more to your retirement accounts. The new year means that you are one year closer to
retirement. To help yourself build resources for the lifestyle youve envisioned as a retiree, try to boost your
contributions to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. You can do this if you get a salary
increase and devote at least part of it to your 401(k). At the same time, try to max out on your Individual
Retirement Account (IRA). For 2012, you can contribute up to $5,000 to an IRA, or $6,000 if youre 50 or
older.
* Reduce your debts. Look for ways to cut down or consolidate your debts. It may not be easy, but its
worth the effort because the lower your debt load, the more money youll have available to invest for the
future.
* Build an emergency fund. If you dont already have an emergency fund containing between six and 12
months worth of living expenses, start building one soon. Keep the money in a liquid vehicle one thats
separate from your everyday checking and savings accounts. Without such an emergency fund, you may be
forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair, a new
furnace or a large medical bill.
* Dont overreact to volatility. In 2011, the financial markets have been volatile, with big gains followed by
big drops followed by big gains a true roller-coaster pattern. Try not to let large, short-term price movements
influence your investment decisions. Many of the factors that cause jumps or declines are not that relevant to
long-term results and as an investor, you want to focus on the long term. Concentrate on building a portfolio
thats suitable for your individual goals and risk tolerance.
* Be aware of different types of risk. For many investors, investment risk strictly means the possibility of
losing principal when the value of an investment drops. Consequently, to cut back on their risk in the face of a
volatile market, they may sell off stocks and load up on certificates of deposit (CDs), bonds and other so-called
safer investments. But each investment actually carries its own type of risk. For example, if you own CDs
that pay a 2 percent return, and the inflation rate is 3 percent, you will lose purchasing power over time. And
if you wanted to sell your bonds before they had matured, youd have to sell them at a discount if the market
interest rate had risen above the coupon rate of your bond because no one would pay you full price for them.
Just be aware that no investment is risk-free, and try to build a diversified portfolio that can lessen the impact
of one specific type of risk.

Well, another Christmas has
come and gone. Hope everyone got
just what they wanted. No neckties
or white shirts. And especially no
Pound Cakes!! All kidding aside
this was a special Christmas for
me but then they are all special.
It was just such a nice Christmas
and I got everything I wanted.
My three kids never seem to fail
when it comes to Christmas gifts.
And my wife did a great job this
year with a gift that I will surely
use this winter. The new jacket is
simply great. And this Christmas
was especially filled with great
entertainment. I watched as my
grandson, now five years old,
opened his presents and saw how
excited he was with each gift. I
think he may be a farmer some day
the way he likes those John Deere
toys. He even has a Deere bicycle.
What about that Bill.B.?
Having just enjoyed a great
Christmas dinner of Ham and
Turkey I think I may have to cut
this column short and catch a few
winks. A nap sounds good right
now. I sure hope you all had a
great Christmas and am looking
forward to a safe and better New
Year and lets hope the Republicans
fine someone new for the White
House.

Fleck as our volunteer of the
month for December. Julie
volunteers her services as
an important force on the
fundraising committee and
as the vice president of the
I.C. School PTo. She has
served on the fundraising committee
for the past two years, and her
expertise in business and marketing
strategies is a huge support to the
school. She most recently co-chaired
Immaculate Conception Schools
first annual All Saints dinner auction,
which was a huge success.
Julie and her husband Tony are the
owners of Bellas Italian Grille
in Celina, and they are active
in many local organizations
and events. Their daughter
Maddie is presently enrolled in
kindergarten at I.C. School.
Julie added, For 3
generations, our family
has attended Immaculate
Conception School. Tony & I both
volunteer at the school because
we appreciate the commitment to
excellence provided by the teachers,
staff, clergy and entire Immaculate

The Parkway FBLA would
like to thank the community for
their support. With the help of
Cub Scout Pack 98 Webelos, the
staff of Parkway Schools, and
especially the Freshmen class, the
program raised over $1400 in toys
and money for Toys for Tots.
This year the Toys for Tots
campaign at Parkway Schools
was blessed by the generosity
of our donors and the Parkway
High School Freshmen class. The
Freshmen were learning about
the Great Depression and how
so many people were able to find
charity in a time of hardship. The
class examined how the Toys for
Tots program is an example of
giving back to a community in
need. The Freshmen class alone
gathered a little over $1000 in
cash and toys. Their kind efforts
and generosity embodies the
spirit of the season and the spirit
of giving.
The toys will be distributed
through the Van Wert area Toys
for Tots program headed by Mr.
Ken Meyers.

January 1, 1880, Andrew
Carnegie, age 45, put five million
dollars into a new steel company.
That five million dollars was the
largest amount of money ever
invested in a single venture in the
history of the iron industry. Andrew
Carnegie and his philanthropic
nature made an impact on our
Nations Libraries.
Born in Scotland on November 25,
1835, Andrew Carnegie was the son
of a weaver, William Carnegie, who
brought his wife and two sons from
Dunfermline, Scotland to Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania in 1848. As a young
teenager, Andrew Carnegie began
working in a cotton factory. Within
a couple of years, Carnegie secured
a position as a telegraph operator,
and then a Railroad Clerk. Carnegie
became secretary to an executive of
the Pennsylvania Railroad, Thomas
A. Scott. When Scott was named
Assistant Secretary of War in 1861,
Carnegie became Superintendent of
the Eastern Military and Telegraph
lines, for the Union forces during
the Civil War.
During the Civil War, Carnegie
reorganized the Keystone Bridge
Works, and after the War, he devoted
himself to iron, oil and other
businesses. In 1868, he established
the Union Iron Mills. The United
States Steel manufacturing became
his strong interest. By 1880,
Carnegie was financially secure, in
order to put five million dollars into
a new steel mill. Carnegie increased
his involvement in the steel industry
until by 1900, the Carnegie Steel
Company, which he had organized
the previous year, controlled most
of the U.S. steel production. By
1901, Carnegie retired during his
65th year. Carnegie spent his next
two decades as a philanthropist of
Carnegie Trusts and Foundations.
Andrew Carnegie died at Lenox,
Massachusetts, on August 11, 1919,
at the end of World War I.
How does this National

to Mercer Countys Local History?
Two Carnegie Libraries in Mercer
County were founded via Carnegies
funds.
In 1897, the idea of a Celina
Library was initiated with cultural
programs and fund raisers. Three
years after Carnegie retired,
he responded to three Celina
organizations request for funds for

Library was dedicated May 1, 1913.

Libraries or Museum Library/
Archives? Will the Kindle and the
NooK Electronic Readers replace
books on Library shelves? Will
Computer search engines, e.g.
GooGLE, replace encyclopedias
and other research books? Will
Libraries and Archival Collections
at Museums be replaced by
technology? Will Librarians and
Museum Archivists no longer be
needed? At the present, not a day

Local Historical Research. I might
suggest that as long as people want
to learn, professional educators will
be a needed.

recently received a check for
$235 from bob Evans Restau-
rant in Greenville. The check is
the result of a fund raiser bob
Evans Restaurant had in Novem-
ber. The restaurant donated 15
percent of each meal purchased
over three days to the local not
for profit agency. Pictured, left to

speaker
for the
December
6, 2011,
meeting
of the
Coldwater
Kiwanis
Club. State of the Heart, a non-
profit agency, has been in existence
for thirty years. It serves clients in
a twelve-county area in western
ohio and eastern Indiana. Beverly
spoke of some of the services that
are offered by State of the Heart in
addition to its regular Hospice care.
The agency is becoming known for
its bereavement programs, such as
Camp Bearable, and music therapy.
Camp Bearable is a summer camp
for kids 6 to 15 years of age who
have lost a loved one. The camp
has been offered for twelve years
and generally serves about 50 kids.
State of the Heart has two full-
time professionally trained music
therapists on staff. The therapists
are able to discern how music
might provide comfort to State of
the Heart clients. Beverlys duties
include educating the community
about the services available
through State of the Heart. She has
been speaking to churches, school,
and civic groups in this effort.

Traviss work ethic
tops every senior here at
Coldwater High School.
He meticulously completes
assignments with great exu-
berance. It was always a
pleasure to read his opinion
writings not only because of
the great work placed into
them, but also the academic
competence. He is able to
balance work and school
better than any other stu-
dent, said Coldwater High
School social studies teacher
Thad Forsthoefel.
These qualities, iden-
tied by Forsthoefel, are
those that distinguish CHS
senior Travis Goettemoeller
as a top achiever in Mercer
County.
Goettemoeller has exhib-
ited his strong work ethic
and commitment to excel-
lence in every area of his
lifein his academics,
extracurricular activities and
employment.
In the classroom,
Goettemoeller said succeed-
ing academically has always
been a bit of a challenge.
I overcome it by always
doing my best on my home-
work and studying for tests
and quizzes, he said.
Some of Goettemoellers
favorite classes have
been chemistry, biology
and advanced placement
American history.
I really enjoyed learn-
ing about the life sciences,
which made chemistry and
biology interesting, he
said. American history was
enjoyable because I got to
learn about the entire history
of the United States. It was a
difcult class, but I learned
a lot.
United States history has
always been a subject of
interest for Goettemoeller.
He said one of his most
valuable school memories is
his classs eighth-grade eld
trip to Washington D.C. He
also strongly believes that
all students should graduate
high school with an under-
standing of how the U.S.
government operates.
We are privileged to
live in such a great country,
and I feel that all high school
graduates should know at
least the basics about how
our country was founded
and why we have such a
great country, he said.
In addition to his inter-
ests science and American
history, Goettemoeller said
he also valued his time spent
in Forsthoefels world stud-
ies, sociology and psychol-
ogy classes.
Mr. Forsthoefel is one
of my favorite teachers,
Goettemoeller said. It is
clear to me that he is very
passionate about what he
teaches. He makes the class-
es interesting and fun, and
he is always there to help his
students out.
Outside of the class-
room, Goettemoeller has
invested his time in a vari-
ety of extracurricular activi-
ties. These include National
Honor Society, Math Club,
Industrial Tech Club, Leo
Club, Spanish Club, golf,

An example of excellence
and a role model at Coldwater
High School is senior Aaron
Hess, the son of Gary and
Marjorie. Throughout his four
years of high school, Hess has
devoted himself to excellence
in the classroom and his com-
mitted himself to standing by
his moral principles.
As a senior at CHS, Hess
has taken seriously his role as
leader in the student body.
As underclassmen, many
students look up to their older
peers for guidance and inu-
ence, he said. This puts the
responsibility on elder students
to set a good example to be
willing to help.
Hess said one student who
set an especially good example
for him was Natalie, a girl a
year older than Hess in school.
She had an unknown con-
dition that made it constantly
painful to move her joints, but
through all this, Natalie was
able to keep her grace, poise
and optimism and became a
leader of her class. She not
only got to know the under-
classmen: she made sure she
knew all of them and offered
support wherever needed, even
when she was at her weakest,
Hess said.
For his own underclassmen,
Hess offers this advice: Dont
get mixed up in the drama of
high school.
You only get four years,
and then you are swept away to
new people and new relation-
ships, he said. Most of your
high school friends will lose
contact with you as you move
on in life. If you dwell on prob-
lems during high school that
will not affect your future, you
miss out on some of the most
fun years of your life that you
will never be able to get back.
Hess also deems it wise to
live life as if your grandma
were looking over your shoul-
der.
Many of the things that we
do in life would not be com-
pletely acceptable in the eyes of
your grandma. Thinking of this
saying when doing something
wrong gives you a very small
feeling of the guilt felt if she
were really looking over your
shoulder at that point in time.
This steers you from that action
and keeps you more on the
straight and narrow, he said.
Thinking of his own grand-
ma looking over his shoulder
has special signicance for
Hess because he does cher-
ish the close relationship they
share. The relationship began
with their mutual love for the
University of Notre Dame.
Which is unheard of in this
predominately Buckeye area,
Hess said.
With the support of his
grandma, Hess said he strove
for academic excellence.
I also treasure the trips I
take to visit her, Hess said.
There is no better joy for me
in life than to sit and explain
how an iPod works to her or
to hear stories of times I have
never heard of. She also comes
to as many events that I partici-
pate in that she can t into her
schedule.
Hess has, in fact, been
involved in many activities
in high school. These include
National Honor Society, band,
choir, show choir, German
Club, Journalism Club,
Scholastic Bowl, TEAMS and
Drama Club. He is an of-
cer for the Ohio Math League,
serves as president of the
Goettemoeller exhibits
strong work ethic

Janelle is a very deserv-
ing Academic Achiever at
Coldwater, said high school
chemistry and physics teacher
Chuck Alig. She comes into
my classroom with a very
positive attitude and a great
desire to learn. She is able to
think at a very high level, but
at the same time, she is always
willing to help in any way
needed.
These are the qualities
her commitment to learn-
ing and her desire to serve
othersthat distinguish
Coldwater High School senior
Janelle Moorman as a top stu-
dent in Mercer County.
Moormans high school
days have been lled with
activity. As a student at
CHS, she has been involved
in a variety of organizations.
These include band, swim
team, track and eld, drama
club, Key Club and FCCLA.
She is a member of 4-H and of
the Food, Fashion and Design
Board. She has served as a
4-H camp counselor, taught
swim lessons, worked as a life
guard and volunteered as a
mass server at her church.
Moormans desire to par-
ticipate in these school and
community activities results
from her commitment to ser-
vice.
I try to live my life by the
rule that I should always help
others if I can, Moorman said.
That is why I get involved in
so many activities. They give
me an opportunity to help
other people by offering my
time and talents to assist them
if I can.
Of these many activi-
ties, Moorman said 4-H has
become an important part of
her life.
Ive learned many good
skills and gained condence
through my activities in 4-H,
she said. Ive met lots of new
people and met friends from
all over the country through
4-H.
Another important activity
for Moorman has been band.
A lot of my best memo-
ries have been at band, and I
have made so many friends
I never would have without
band, she said.
Moorman said she will
always remember the bands
trip to Disney World in
Florida.
We got to march in a
parade down Main Street,
USA, in Magic Kingdom,
go to a beach, watch the
Blue Man Group and have a
recording session, Moorman
said. That week will forever
be one of my favorite high
school memories.
In band, Moorman said she
appreciated the guidance and
leadership she received from
band director Dan Ruckman.
He sets a wonderful
example for the students,
Moorman said. I have learned
from him what it means to be
a determined, hard-working,
passionate individual who
takes pride in what one does.
Mr. Ruckman has inuenced
me to give my best at every-
thing I do and to be proud
of it.

The most valuable things
in life are what you cant see,
said Celina High School senior
Justin Hoffman.
Everything Hoffman has
invested in his studies at CHS
demonstrates his unequivocal
estimation of education as an
intangible asset of great worth.
I think education is impor-
tant, Hoffman said, because it
allows people to better under-
stand and appreciate the world
in which they live.
Hoffmans own experienc-
es in the classroom at Celina
High School and outside the
classroom in his involvement in
extracurricular activities have
done just this for Hoffman and
have helped him discover and
perfect his talents.
One talent Hoffman has
uncovered through his high
school experience is his public
speaking ability. He credits high
school government teacher Bill
Sell for helping him develop
this skill.
Mr. Sell has given me
condence in my opinions and
condence to speak publicly
without extensive preparation,
Hoffman said.
Hoffman also said his partic-
ipation on the Mock Trial team
at the high school helped him
further practice these skills.
Mock Trial really helped
me get used to and begin to
love public speaking, especially
when it is impromptu, he said.
From these experiences of
his own, Hoffman is able to
encourage his underclassmen to
boldly attempt new experiences
and cultivate new skills.
I would advise under-
classmen to take a chance at
something that they want to be
good at, even if it makes them
nervous or uncomfortable, he
said.
In all of his own endeavors
throughout the years, Hoffman
said he has been thankful for the
unfailing support of his parents,
Bill and Shirley. He looks to
both as role models in his life
and educational career.
They always persevere
with a constant optimism and
are kind to everyone they meet,
he said.
He said his mom, especially,
has been one of his biggest sup-
porters in his every endeavor.
She has always pushed me
to be the best I can be, he
said.
This support has extended
to both extracurricular and aca-
demic activities. Outside the
classroom, Hoffman has been
involved in not only Mock
Trial, but also Scholastic Bowl,
Teenage Republicans, Spanish
Club, Junior Engineering
Technical Society (JETS),
National Honor Society, Chess
Club, Friends of Rachel and
Students Against Destructive
Decisions (SADD). He played
tennis for CHS and also par-
ticipated in the Immaculate
Conception Youth Group.
Through these activities,
Hoffman has made many
memories. He said, though,
he will especially remember
being a part of the Celina High
School Scholastic Bowl team
that placed rst out of 32 teams
at the Wright State Tournament
his sophomore year.
Scholastic Bowl gave me
the condence to trust myself
to make decisions and trust in
them through our various com-
petitions, he said.
Inside the classroom,
Hoffman has found enjoy-
ment in a wide range of intel-
lectual activity. Two of his
favorite classes have been his
independent study in art and
his advanced placement (AP)
chemistry class.
My independent study in
art was fun because I had free
reign and practically no dead-
lines to practice drawing, which
I love to do, he said. AP
chemistry was great because,
even though the material was
very difcult, it was fascinating
to me to understand how things
work at the atomic level. I also

This saying captures
Mertzs attitude in his
approach to lifehis desire
to seize every opportunity.
Life is full of opportuni-
ties to stand out and be a
unique individual, he said.
If I made decisions based on
what other people thought,
I wouldnt take shots, and
I would always miss out on
something. Perhaps I take a
shot and miss, but at least I
gave myself a chance to suc-
ceed. Even in my failures,
I come out successful if I
gain something from the situ-
ation.
Such an attitude is evi-
dent in the hard work Mertz
has invested into his many
endeavors.
Sean Mertz is an
extremely hard worker both
on the soccer eld and in
the classroom, said Ryan
Jenkins, high school pre-cal-
culus teacher and boys varsi-
ty soccer coach. Sean earned
his varsity letter in soccer as
a sophomore and worked to
earn a starting spot on the
varsity team as a senior. He
was continually looking to
push himself to improve his
soccer skills and help the
team. Sean was always able
to balance his soccer respon-
sibilities with his schoolwork.
As a member of my pre-
calculus class his junior year,
Sean was always prepared to
be an active member of the
class. He was willing to par-
ticipate in class discussions
and to help his classmates
when they did not understand
the problem. I am condent
Sean will continue to utilize
his strong work ethic to suc-
ceed in his future endeavors
following high school.
For his future plans, Mertz
hopes to major in either phar-
macy or biomedical engineer-
ing in college. He will choose
which college he will attend
based upon which major he
decides to pursue. Currently,
as a volunteer at Mercer
Health, Mertz has been able
to explore the medical eld
and has spent time working in
the hospital pharmacy.
Volunteering at Mercer
Health Community Hospital
has been very benecial,
Mertz said. Not only am
I helping people, but at the
same time, Im also gaining
experience in working in a
hospital setting.
Mertzs interest in phar-
macy and biomedical engi-
neering also arises from his
love for math and chemis-
try. His advanced placement
chemistry class was one of
his favorites in high school,
and Mertz said he appreci-
ated the time and energy
chemistry teacher Dave Scott
injected into his classes.
During his classes, I
really discovered my inter-
est in chemistry, Mertz said.
Mr. Scott loved chemistry
and tried to rub off this love
for the subject to his students.
After solving a problem as
a class, he would say, Now
wasnt that fun? Mr. Scott
seemed to know a little bit
about everything. Along with
his knowledge of chemistry,
he knew about scuba div-
ing, how to raise cattle and
other interesting things. This
has inspired me to become a
well-rounded individual like
Mr. Scott, always looking to
learn something new.
Another class Mertz great-
ly enjoyed in high school was
his sports physiology class.
I learned about parts of
my body and injuries that
occur during athletics, Mertz
said. Since Im an athlete, I
found this class related to my
life and had immediate use.
As an athlete at CHS,
Mertz was a part of the soc-
cer, basketball and track

Emily Nighswander
is, of course, a very
smart girl with wonder-
ful grades. Intelligence
on its own, however, is
not very compelling. High
schools abound with stu-
dents possessing poten-
tial and ability. Emily is
much more than that. She
is intellectual, but also very
hardworking, tenacious,
enthusiastic and curious.
She is simultaneously fun
to be around and capable of
genuine seriousness. She is
thoughtful and caring, cre-
ative and complex. Lots of
kids will jump through the
hoops to get the grade, but
Emily is honestly interest-
ed in learning and growing.
She seems to love educa-
tion for its own sakein-
ternalizing its importance
and power to enrich her
life. Shes the real deal,
engaging wholeheartedly,
said Celina High School
French teacher Marcia
Smith.
With those words, Smith
captures the essence of CHS
senior Emily Nighswander,
the daughter of Dan and
Lynne, and illustrates why
Nighswander holds a spot
at the top of her class.
The key to
Nighswanders high school
success has been her deter-
mination to always try her
best.
I have learned its
important to always give
110 percent, not just in
schoolwork, but with every-
thing in life, Nighswander
said.
In fact, she encourages
her underclassmen to get
involved and to always
put forth their best effort in
their every activity.
Whether its in sports,
music or some other school
activity, its important to
be involved, Nighswander
said. Extracurriculars are
a great way to make mem-
ories, learn and meet new
people. I would also tell
underclassmen to try their
hardest, even when they
dont want to.
Nighswanders own hard
work is evident, both inside
and outside the classroom.
In school, Nighswander
has been most captivated
by her French classes.
I like the language, and
I think their history and
culture is very interesting,
she said.
She has also greatly
enjoyed her pre-calculus
class.
It has been my favorite
math course throughout the
years, she said.
Outside of school,
Nighswander has stayed
busy with a variety of
extracurricular activities.
These include Student
Council, Scholastic Bowl,
Mock Trial, Chess Club,
Spirit Squad, French
Club, Students Against
Destructive Decisions
(SADD), National Honor
Society, Future Teachers
of America, tennis, band
and ReQuest literary
magazine. She attended
Buckeye Girls State this
summer, dances at Upstage
Downtown Dance Theatre
and volunteers in the com-
munity.
Being involved in
outside activities teaches
responsibility, and it allows
you to meet new people
and gain new experiences,
Nighswander said.
Two especially valuable
experiences for her have
been her participation in
Student Council and Mock

classroom and takes care of
all the details necessary to be
a winner, said Fort Recovery
High School English teacher
Mark Hubbard. Her ability
and work ethic have combined
to bring her success that she
has certainly deserved. Beyond
this, she is a friendly and con-
siderate person, and that will
only add to her very bright
future.
Upon this recommendation,
FRHS senior Alison Koch, the
daughter of Thane and Lori,
earns recognition as a Mercer
County Academic Achiever.
In achieving this success
throughout her high school
years, Koch has looked to
the support and guidance of a
number of important people in
her life. Foremost among these
are her parents.
They are always there for
me when I need them and
always push me to do my
best, she said. Ive also been
inspired to achieve more while
looking back on my parents
achievements and the lives
theyve led, she said.
Also supporting Koch in
her goals are her two grand-
mothers.
They both have such a
positive outlook on life and
have given me amazing advice
that I cant get anywhere else,
she said. Every time Im
unsure about myself or dont
know what to do in a situa-
tion, I think about what one
of them would do. Theyve
helped me through so much,
and I dont know what I would
have turned out like if it hadnt
been for them.
This support she has
received from her parents and
grandmas has helped Koch
rise above one of her most
signicant challenges in her
life: overcoming her own self-
doubt.
I used to always be
uncondent about myself and
unsure about the quality of my
accomplishments, Koch said.
Over the years, with love
and support from my family
and friends, Ive built up my
self-condence and learned to
be proud of myself for my
achievements.
In the classroom, Kochs
condence has been bolstered
by the support and encourage-
ment she has received from
her teachers.
The past four years of high
school, every single one of my
teachers has inuenced me in a
positive way, she said. All of
my teachers have expected the
best out of me, and there was
never a time when I felt dis-
couraged or wasnt given help
or assistance when I needed it.
My teachers have taught me to
try my hardest no matter what
I do and have motivated me to
do the best I cannot only in
school, but in life as well.
Koch has indeed invested
her efforts not only in the
classroom, but also in a variety
of activities outside the regular
school day. Some of the activi-
ties in which she has participat-
ed include show choir, cheer-
leading, FCCLA, National
Honor Society, SADD, Drama
Club and Scholastic Bowl.
Ive made memories and
have had tons of fun while
being involved in all of these
activities, Koch said, and
theyve all helped shape me
into the person I am today.
Extracurriculars make you
more of a well-rounded per-
son, and youd be surprised at
how many friends you make
by being involved in them.
Koch does credit her participa-
tion in show choir and cheer-
leading, especially, for helping
her gain condence in herself.
They have both helped me
come out of my shell and dis-
cover talents that I didnt know
I had, she said.
From her many high school
experiences, Koch has gleaned
some important advice she
wishes to share with her under-

ing, said Fort Recovery
High School senior Natalie
Lennartz, the daughter of
Duane and Amy.
Such an attitude has been
the key to Lennartzs high
school success: everything
she has deemed worth doing
she has done to the best of her
ability.
Such commitment to excel-
lence is apparent in Lennartzs
achievements in the classroom.
For example, high school
math teacher Janice Osterloh
has noticed Lennartzs hard
work in her advanced place-
ment calculus class.
Natalie Lennartz has qui-
etly tacked AP calculus with
a erce determination to do
well, Osterloh said. Her
efforts and the results of those
efforts have been outstand-
ing!
Osterlohs calculus class
has been one of Lennartzs
favorites. She also enjoyed
chemistry and physics.
These classes have chal-
lenged me to fulll my full
potential, and Ive always
enjoyed math and science
classes, she said.
In chemistry and physics,
Lennartz said she appreciated
teacher Robyn Armstrongs
willingness to challenge her
students.
Shes always pushing my
peers and me to go above
and beyond our comfort zone
and to work outside the box,
Lennartz said.
Lennartz encourages
underclassmen to seek out
these types of challenging
classes for themselves.
Challenge yourself every-
day by taking challenging
classes or working towards
something you may not be so
good at, she advised younger
students. This has taught me
that you cant succeed unless
you try.
Lennartz plans to continue
challenging herself academi-
cally in the next few years as
she begins working toward a
degree in pharmacy. She has
not yet decided which col-
lege she will attend, but she
said she has chosen pharmacy
because of her love for math
and science.
Academics, nevertheless,
have not been Lennartzs sole
focus in high school. She also
took some time to have some
fun. Lennartz said, for exam-
ple, that her most memorable
high school moment would be
watching a hypnotist who vis-
ited the high school hypnotize
one of her friends. The friend,
under the hypnotic inuence,
delivered a presidential speech
to the United States (or, in
reality, the student body) in
Martian.
Lennartz has also par-
ticipated in many extracur-
ricular activities at FRHS.
These include FFA, softball,
show choir, Future Business
Leaders of America, CYO
basketball, National Honor
Society and Sports Medicine
Club. Outside of school, she
has been a member of 4-H and
of the Mercer County Junior
Fair Board.
Of these activities,
Lennartz said she has grown
most through her involve-
ment in FFA. Through the
organization, she has gained
skills in general livestock, soil
judging, food science, parlia-
mentary procedure and public
speaking.
Through my involve-
ment in FFA, I have excelled
in doing things outside my
comfort zone and have taken
on leadership roles, such as
treasurer my junior year and
president my senior year. I
feel that all my accomplish-
ments through the FFA have
allowed me to meet new
people and experience things
I wouldnt have experienced
if it werent for my involve-

What work you put into
something is what you get
out of it, said Fort Recovery
High School senior Olivia
Schwieterman. Over time, it
shows what kind of effort you
put forth into life. With that
hard work you put in, there
are always sacrices to be
made. It could mean staying
home one night from watch-
ing a movie with friends to
study for a test, but if you
get that grade you were hop-
ing for, then it was time well
spent.
This is exactly the type
of effort that has helped
Schwieterman, the daughter
of Mike and Karen, succeed.
By putting in the hard work
and time necessary, she has
become a top achiever at
FRHS.
What I have learned in
high school is that if you slack,
then it tends to show towards
big tests and at the end of the
year when you thought you
deserved a higher grade in a
class, Schwieterman said. I
have always wanted to strive
in and out of the classroom,
and I believe it all starts with
self-motivation: you have to
want something a great deal
to receive it. The advice I
can give to underclassmen
would be to try your best. You
know what you are capable of
doing, so why not just give
it your all while youre in
the process? Hard work and
dedication will help a great
deal in life.
Schwietermans own self-
motivation, dedication and
hard work have resulted in
her academic success in the
classroom.
Her determination, drive,
attention to detail and positive
attitude entitle her to be called
an Academic Achiever,
said high school chemistry
and physics teacher Robyn
Armstrong. I can always
count on her to have quality
work done on time, to volun-
teer and to be attentive to what
we are studying.
Armstrongs science
classes, along with all of
Schwietermans math classes,
have been her favorites in
high school, and because of
this interest in science and
math, Schwieterman hopes to
pursue a career in engineering
next year at the Ohio State
University.
While she is ready and
eager to embark upon this
next stage of her educational
journey, Schwieterman will
be missed in the halls of Fort
Recovery High School.
She has a smile for
me each and every day,
Armstrong said. I will miss
her kindness and her enthusi-
asm for life and learning when
she graduates. I am proud to
have been her teacher.
Schwieterman returns this
regard, appreciating all the
guidance and direction she
has received from Armstrong
during her high school years.
She teaches with a moth-
erly-aspect to her, so when you
have a rough day, she usually
understands, Schwieterman
said. She has always been
there for me, through teaching
me something I didnt under-
stand to listening to me when
I have a problem to giving me
a big hug. She is one of those
teachers who have had a big
impact on who I would like to
be as I become older and be
that better person in life.
In addition to Armstrong,
Schwieterman said she has
also appreciated the support
she has received from her
family. Her older brother,
Nick, has been a role model
for her in high school.
I have always admired his
drive and passion for doing

Advice that I would give to
underclassmen would be to plan
ahead for the future, but to not
forget to live in the moment,
said Marion Local High School
senior Darian Bergman. Have
fun in your high school years
because, before you know it,
they will be over. Time can y
by so fast, so I always try to do
all that I can so that I do not
miss out on anything and miss
many important experiences.
Bergman, throughout her
own high school years, has
made the most of every oppor-
tunity, achieving much success
at MLHS.
In the challenges and oppor-
tunities Bergman has encoun-
tered inside and outside the
classroom, she said she has
been able to depend upon the
support of her parents, Randy
and Stacie.
My mother has been my
biggest supporter in both my
life and my high school career
because she always encour-
ages me to take challenges and
to tackle them with my best
effort, she said. Dad works
hard for everything he has, and
if I could work half as hard as
he does, I know I will always
be successful.
Bergman does demon-
strate a strong work ethic of
her own in the classes she has
taken at Marion Local. High
school Spanish teacher Ashley
Minnich has observed and
appreciated all of Bergmans
hard work.
She is a bright student
and performs well in the
classroom and with her life
endeavors, Minnich said of
Bergman. Darian does not shy
away from work or the more
challenging classes. She has
an ability for critical thinking
and applying cross-curricular
knowledge between classes.
I enjoy Darian as a student
because, while she is serious
about her studies, she appears
to have a balance on life and
is enjoyable to teach; she also
has a great sense of humor. She
is very witty. I also observe
that quick thinking in her aca-
demic work. When I show her
corrections, she quickly seems
to grasp what she had missed
and is able to apply it to future
work.
Minnichs high school
Spanish class has been
Bergmans favorite.
It is a lot of work, Bergman
said, but Mrs. Minnich makes
it fun and worth the effort. If
it were not for her encourage-
ment, I would have quit her
class a long time ago. Although
Spanish is a lot of work, it is
very rewarding, and I would
have regretted not taking it.
In addition to Spanish,
Bergman said she also enjoyed
her math classes, although
these, too, were not easy for
her.
Despite all of her difcult
classes she is taking, never-
theless, Bergman said she has
been able to handle the chal-
lenges by avoiding procrasti-
nation and working on my time
management.
By working through these
challenges, too, Bergman has
learned that there are numer-
ous options and possibilities
out there for everyone.
Just because they are not
the top of the class, they are
still going to achieve and get
through the courses just as
everyone else, she said.
Bergmans own hard work
and determination to achieve
are not only apparent in the
classroom. These qualities
can also be observed in her
extracurricular commitments.
In high school, Bergman has
played basketball and run cross
country. She is involved in
the industrial technology, art
and drama clubs as well as the

Growing from a quiet
freshman to an enthusiastic
senior, there is no doubt that
Isaac adds to the high schools
environment with his meticu-
lous yet vivacious personal-
ity, said Marion Local High
School English teacher Lynne
Yates. Whether it is as a stu-
dent in class, a member of the
band or an Eagle Scout, Isaac
always attempts his best and
tries to help others. This was
shown last year when I asked
Isaac if he would be willing to
tutor a fellow student; Isaac
agreed to help his classmate
and without any remuneration
for the semester. However,
Isaac also has a spirited sense
of humor, which keeps the
classroom enjoyable. In class,
Isaac always contributes
insightful ideas, and with a
wry smile, regularly insists his
astute intellect is due solely to
testosterone. However, while
Isaac is respected for his apti-
tude, he may have to work
more on his persuasive skills
as the girls in the class have
yet to endorse his theory.
With this description, Yates
captures the man, senior Isaac
Wilker, who has seized every
opportunity to grow and suc-
ceed at Marion Local High
School.
Wilker can name a number
of individuals who have had
a profound inuence on his
life and high school career.
Included in this number is
Yates, Wilkers English teach-
er during his junior and senior
years in high school.
Miss Lynne Yates has
taught me the importance and
necessity of hard work, atten-
tiveness to detail and persis-
tence. Her challenging courses
have kept me on my feet and
have taught me to expect much
of myself, Wilker said.
In addition to Yates
English courses, Wilker said
he has also learned much in his
high school Spanish classes.
Learning about a differ-
ent culture and being able to
speak some of the language is
a challenging and interesting
experience, he said.
Two others who have
greatly inuenced Wilker are
his parents, Herb and Doris.
They are always there to
listen to me and encourage me
in all of my endeavors, he
said. Their advice and guid-
ance has been quite inuential
in my life.
Finally, Wilker said he
looks to his grandfather as a
role model in his life.
The Christian morals and
values he possesses, combined
with the sociability and friend-
liness with which he carries
himself, has led me to attempt
to live my life in a way close
to his, Wilker said.
In fact, these individu-
als and Wilkers experiences
have impressed upon him a
sense of justice, compassion
and responsibility. Wilker said
he is drawn to the poem Do It
Anyway by Mother Theresa.
This poem, found in
Mother Theresas home for
children in Calcutta, India,
elaborates on the realities of
life and the importance of still
maintaining composure and
doing what is right, even if
the results are eliminated or
not seen by society, Wilker
explained.
In his own life, Wilker has
taken the time to serve others
through many of his extracur-
ricular activities. For example,
he is involved with his church,
St. Sebastian Catholic Church,
and he is a member of the Boy
Scouts. Additionally, he is a
member of the cross country,
basketball and baseball teams,
the band, the National Honor
Society and several other
school clubs. He also works
at the New Bremen Dairy
Queen.

Marion Local High School
senior Margaret Wuebker,
the daughter of Michael and
Mary. Its easy to get dis-
tracted by life, but if you stay
focused, it denitely pays
off.
Such advice has been
proven by Wuebkers own
high school success. By stay-
ing focused on her goals
academically and athletical-
lyWuebker has achieved
excellence in each of these
areas of her life.
High school advanced
placement calculus teacher
Doug Jutte praises Wuebkers
achievements both inside and
outside the classroom.
Margaret Wuebker is
a leader in both sports and
academics here at Marion
Local High School, Jutte
said. I have the privilege of
teaching her advanced place-
ment calculus. Margaret has
excelled in this class and
enjoys the challenge. She is
a leader in class, where she
volunteers to work problems
on the board and explain
them to her peers. She does
a great job of staying caught
up while playing volleyball
and basketball. Margaret was
recently selected rst team
All-State in volleyball. She
is a role model for the under-
classmen who want to be
scholar athletes.
In achieving such suc-
cess in her many pursuits at
MLHS, Wuebker has appre-
ciated the support she has
received from her family.
Theyve supported me
throughout my four years of
high school, Wuebker said.
My family is always at my
sporting events, cheering me
on.
Wuebker said her older
sister, Marianne, has been a
role model for her because
of the example of excellence
she set.
She worked extremely
hard during her high school
career to be the best she
could be in the classroom
and on the court, Wuebker
said.
Her parents, too, have
greatly inuenced Wuebkers
desire to succeed.
My mother and father
raised me to work hard in
anything that I do, includ-
ing my academic and athletic
lives, she said. They raised
me to work hard and treat
others with respect, so thats
denitely something I live
my life by.
Next year, Wuebker hopes
to continue both her academ-
ic and athletic pursuits at
the University of Findlay.
At Findlay, she will join the
womens basketball team,
and she hopes to major in
the medical eld. Wuebker
has not yet decided what her
major will be at Findlay, but
she is drawn to the medical
eld because of her interest
in science.
I enjoy my science
courses tremendously, she
said.
Outside of the classroom,
Wuebker has enjoyed her
participation in a variety of
extracurricular activities. In
addition to volleyball and
basketball, Wuebker has
served as a class ofcer and
as a member of the student
council. She is the vice
president of various clubs at
Marion Local. She coaches
volleyball for younger stu-
dents at school, and she is a
lector for her church.
It is important to be
involved in outside activities
because it opens your eyes to
the possibilities that are out
in the world, Wuebker said.
Every person should experi-
ence as many new things as
possible to gain knowledge.

to be easy, said senior
Brooke Boznango, but by
holding your head high, you
can make it through and nd
what good things life does
have in store for you.
Boznango has faced her
share of challenges through-
out her life and high school
career, yet through everything
she has persevered, serving
as an example of excellence
at Parkway High School.
Boznango said she lives
her life by the rule, Keep
going; never stand still.
I know that probably
sounds crazy, but for me,
it makes perfect sense,
Boznango said. Life is
about adventure, taking risks
and reaching for the stars.
Never back down, and keep
going. Life is too short to
stay stationary. Step out of
that comfort zone and take a
chance.
This life rule is evi-
dent in Boznangos active
high school career. In the
classroom, Boznango has
kept busy with the many
challenging and interest-
ing courses she has taken,
and outside the classroom,
Boznango has remained just
as engaged. Her activities
are many: Future Business
Leaders of America, Future
Teachers of America, Drama
Club, Science Club, Foreign
Language Club, National
Honor Society, Pep Club,
band, bowling, volleyball,
Student Council, yearbook,
AM Newscast, Scholastic
Bowl, Book Club, Prom
Committee and Friends of
Rachel. She keeps stats for
boys basketball and baseball,
serves as her class treasurer,
helps with school publica-
tions, tutors, assists with
Vacation Bible School and
leads worship at her church,
participates in the annual
Rockford Variety Show, shad-
ows at Celina Community
Sports and Therapy, plays
volleyball with the Grand
Lake Volleyball Club and
helps with her grandparents
business, Riverside Charter,
when she can.
Participating in so many
activities, Boznango said, is
extremely important.
By getting involved out-
side of school, you can meet
tons of new people and build
strong relationships that you
never thought possible. You
can create bonds that will
last a lifetime and even help
you out in the real world
someday. The world is a big
place with millions of oppor-
tunities for you to immerse
yourself in. The key is to nd
them, she said.
Of these activities,
Boznango said serving as
worship leader at her church
has been one of the most
important to her.
I have been able to grow
in my faith, while gaining
condence talking in front of
a group of people, she said.
Another activity in which
Boznango has invested her-
self fully is Future Business

An all-around good student
at Parkway High School is
senior Caden Hellwarth.
Caden Hellwarth is
an excellent example of an
Academic Achiever as he con-
tinuously strives to challenge
himself inside and outside the
classroom, said Parkway High
School guidance counselor
Mickey McConahay. He is
ranked at the top of his class
while taking as many courses
as he could possibly work into
his schedule throughout high
school. Caden has also been an
achiever in the organizations
he participates in. Cadens
work ethic from the family
farm to the classroom is one to
be admired.
Hellwarth credits his suc-
cesses, in part, to the strong
support he receives from his
parents, Garrett and Judy.
They have not only
encouraged my learning in
school, they have also taught
me many life lessons, includ-
ing how to work hard and to
always try your best even if it
isnt easy or popular, he said.
Other important lessons
Hellwarth has gained through
his life experiences thus far are
the importance of making the
best of what you are given
and of treating others with
respect, as you would wish to
be treated. Such are the prin-
ciples that guide Hellwarths
decisions in life and his inter-
actions with others.
Hellwarth has, in fact, spent
a lot of his time in high school
building relationships with oth-
ers through the many extracur-
ricular activities in which he
has participated. These activi-
ties include FFA, National
Honor Society, 4-H, Art
Club, Science Club, Foreign
Language Club, swim team
and the Mt. Tabor Church of
God youth group and worship
team. Additionally, he spends
a lot of his time working on his
familys dairy farm.
Being involved in out-
side activities is important,
Hellwarth said, because it
allows you to broaden your
horizons, enhance your skills
in new elds and make con-
nections with new people.
Through the activities in
which he has participated,
Hellwarth said he has appre-
ciated the opportunities he
has had to help others and to
develop his leadership skills.
FFA has been an especially
valuable leadership activity.
In fact, Hellwarth serves as
president of the Parkway FFA
chapter.
Being elected the FFA
chapter president was the cul-
mination of my four years in
the FFA and allowed me to
develop my leadership skills
even further, he said.
Hellwarth said he believes
leadership skills are important
for all students to develop in
high school, especially skills
in public speaking.
These skills, he said, can
help students overcome fears
and be better prepared for life
ahead.
In addition to encourag-
ing underclassmen to develop
leadership skills, Hellwarth
also advises them to work
hard in school and keep up
with schoolwork.
I have learned that school
may not necessarily seem fun
now, but it will pay huge divi-
dends later if you keep your
head in the game, he said.
Some of Hellwarths
favorite high courses include
agricultural education, art and
history because they allow
room for critical thinking and
creativity.
Hellwarth also said he
learned much for the teachers
in these courses.
Mr. Alan Post, my agricul-
tural education teacher, taught
me many leadership skills and
the importance of hard work,
he said. Mr. Edward Kuhn,
my art teacher, also taught me
the value of hard work and
diligence. Mr. Harrison Frech,

Never put off tomorrow
what you can do today. The
sooner something gets done,
the sooner it can be off your
mind. It makes school and life
a lot easier, said Parkway
High School senior Haley
Roehm.
Such has been Roehms
necessary approach to her high
school years. With school-
work, extracurricular activi-
ties, athletic practices and
events and work on her fam-
ily farm, Roehm, the daughter
of Roland and Teresa, has
had to invest her time wisely
to achieve all the success that
she has.
Supporting Roehm in her
many high school endeavors
have been two important fam-
ily members: her mom and
her sister.
My biggest supporter and
major inuence has been my
mom, Roehm said. She has
helped me to get through all
obstacles in life and encour-
aged me to do my best in
school. I can count on her to
help me with anything.
Roehm said her sister has
been a role model for her
throughout her life.
She has had great suc-
cess, and I hope to achieve the
same thing, she said.
So far, Roehm has achieved
the same, and her secret to her
success is her hard work.
Advice I can give to
underclassmen is to always
do the best they can, Roehm
said. Laziness will not help
at all. I have learned that if an
effort is given, the outcomes
will always be better. One is
more likely to succeed with a
good work ethic.
Roehm has certainly dis-
played her own work ethic
in the classroom at PHS, evi-
denced by her academic suc-
cess, and in school, Roehm
said one of her favorite classes
has always been English.
I love to read and write,
Roehm said. I feel as though
English is most important
because it will be used in
everyones future. No matter
what eld someone goes into,
they must always be able to
use and understand words.
Roehm said she valued her
time in the classroom with
Parkway High School English
teacher Leah Etgen.
She taught me many
things not only about English,
but also about how to study
and be successful in all class-
es. She showed how paying
attention and working hard
will produce good things,
Roehm said.
Because of her love for
the subject, Roehm plans to
major in English education
next fall at the University of
St. Francis.
I would like to continue
learning about my favorite
subject and then teach it to
others, she said.
Etgen expresses her com-
plete condence in Roehms
ability to succeed in these
future plans.
Haley is an intelligent
young lady who brings though-
provoking and humorous per-
spectives into the classroom,
Etgen said. She has a quirky
personality that makes every-
one she comes in contact with
smile! Haley always seems to
be in control and condent in
her ideas. She is a fun-loving
young lady who will be very
successful in whatever she
decides to do in life!
These qualities Etgen has
observed that have helped
Roehm succeed in the class-
room have also helped her
succeed in her many extracur-
ricular pursuits. These include
volleyball, basketball, Foreign
Language Club, Book Club,
Hellwarth excels in all areas
Roehm succeeds with
strong work ethic

To me, an Academic
Achiever not only has excelled
in academics, but also in leader-
ship and community service,
said St. Henry High School
Guidance Counselor Betsy
Armstrong. Kent Stammen
seems to be a reserved and quiet
person. However, this does not
stop him from being a leader in
his class or in school.
As a result of his academic
excellence, leadership and ser-
vice, senior Kent Stammen,
the son of Mark and Angie,
earns recognition as a 2011-
2012 Mercer County Academic
Achiever.
In the classroom, Stammen
has excelled, earning numerous
awards and recognition. He has
received the MAC Academic
Award and a MAC Honorable
Mention in football. He has also
been named a Student of the
Month at St. Henry High School
and received the OSU-Honda
Partnership Math Award.
Math and science have, in
fact, been Stammens areas of
strength throughout his high
school years, and he said he has
most enjoyed all of his math
and science classes.
I enjoy discovering new
ideas and solving problems,
he said.
Stammen credits high school
math teacher Jerry Mestemaker
for helping him excel in that
subject.
Because of his interest in
math and science, Stammen
plans to attend The Ohio State
University next fall, where he
will major in mechanical engi-
neering.
Outside of the classroom,
Stammen has also been engaged
and committed. He has partici-
pated in many activities, includ-
ing National Honor Society,
football, basketball and base-
ball. He also assists with youth
athletic camps and helps with
roadside cleanup and the recy-
cling program at the school.
One of the things that I
respect most about Kent is
his attitude of giving back to
younger students, Armstrong
said. He has helped with the
middle school basketball and
football camps and has vol-
unteered at youth basketball
camp.
Of his many extracurricular
activities, Stammen said foot-
ball has been one of the most
valuable for him.
It has taught me the impor-
tance of teamwork, attitude and
effort, he said.
Stammen said he will never
forget playing against Marion
Pleasant this fall.
I had over 100 yards receiv-
ing with a touchdown, and I had
an interception on defense, he
said.
Nevertheless, Stammens
high school athletic career has
not been without its challenges.
My biggest challenge was
when I tore my ACL, he said.
I overcame my injury by hav-
ing surgery and working hard to
rehabilitate my knee.
In his challenges, however,
Stammen has looked to a few
role models in his life. He said
he admires former Ohio State
basketball player David Lighty.
He has shown how hard
work and effort can go a long
way, Stammen said.
Stammen has also appreci-
ated the support and guidance
he has received from his par-
ents.
My parents have been my
biggest supporters, he said.
They have helped me make
good decisions.
From all his high school
experiences, Stammen said
he has learned the importance
of the Golden Ruletreating
others the way that he would
like to be treated. He has also
discovered the importance of
being his own person.
All students should learn
how to be more independent
and stick to what they really
believe, he said.
Stammen, too, encourages
his underclassmen to enjoy
high school while it lasts.
Its over before you know
it, he said.

Janel has many talents and
uses them in a way that makes
her an excellent role model,
said St. Henry High School sci-
ence teacher Randy Hoying.
It is true, as Hoying has
observed, that senior Janel
Vogel, the daughter of Jerry
and Marilyn, has distinguished
herself in many areas of her
life. Academically, musically
and athletically, Vogel has
offered her talents to her school
and to her community.
Music has been one of
Vogels passions throughout
her life. In her free time, she
has spent time singing at a local
nursing home, helping direct
the youth choir at her church,
serving as a cantor at her church
and teaching a music program
for Vacation Bible School dur-
ing the summers.
She said she enjoys using
her talents to help others, and
she especially loves singing at
the nursing home.
I feel that I can help the
residents relax and not be wor-
ried about life at least for a little
while, she said.
Vogel hopes to continue
cultivating and using her gift
in the future as she pursues a
career in music education in the
fall at Wright State University.
I enjoy teaching others,
especially with the talent of
music that I have been given,
she said.
Vogels musical talents
have not gone unrecognized in
the community. In fact, Vogel
became the rst student from
St. Henry to be accepted to
Ohios All-State Choir, a pro-
gram for which students from
all over the state audition.
In her musical pursuits,
Vogel said she has appreciated,
rst and foremost, the support
of her parents. In everything,
she said, academically, ath-
letically, musically and spiritu-
ally, they have always encour-
aged her.
Vogel said she has also
appreciated the friendship she
has found with fellow All-
State Choir member Jessica
Wellman.
She has been my role
model because she has always
been a great singer and is very
easygoing and sociable, Vogel
said. I rst met Jessica my
sophomore year when we car-
pooled to All-State Choir for
the many practices. The one
thing I remember especially is
that she had on a Christian
radio station that, at rst, I
thought was weird, but now I
cant nd myself listening to
anything else besides it.
In the classroom, Vogel
has appreciated support from
Hoying, her science teacher.
He taught me how to be
self-sufcient and to really
work hard for my grades, she
said.
Hoyings chemistry class
and her math and choir classes
have been Vogels favorites in
high school.
I enjoyed chemistry
because the experiments were
fun and the teacher was awe-
some, she said. Math comes
fairly easy to me, and I abso-
lutely love to sing, so choir is
also one of my favorites.
Hoying said he has been
impressed with Vogels perfor-
mance in the classroom.
She is smart, motivated
and responsible, he said. She
has a pleasant disposition that
makes it easy for anyone to
work with and has a posi-
tive attitude that is infectious.
Overall, Janel is just an out-
standing person and student!
Outside the classroomin
addition to her many musi-
cal activitiesVogel is also
involved in cross country,
track, Ohio Future Educators
of America, Students Against
Destructive Decisions, Drama
Club, Science Club and Spanish
Club. She is the technology
ofcer for National Honor
Society, helps pick up trash
along the highways in the area
and is a server at her church.

I live my life by the say-
ing, Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery. Today
is a gift. Thats why its called
the present, said St. Henry
High School senior Jenna
Watercutter. This keeps me
from worrying about the future
and dwelling on the past. It
reminds me to live in each
moment and to never have
regrets.
With such an approach to
life, Watercutter, the daughter
of Steve and Mary, has seized
every opportunity to become
an active participant in her
school and community.
Watercutters high school
days have been lled with
activity. She is a member of
the Academic Team, German
Club, Science Club, National
Honor Society, Drama Club
and softball team. She sings in
the choir at her church and at a
local nursing home during the
summer. She is a member of
her churchs Catholic Youth
Organization and of her parish
clusters youth group. She is a
mass server at her church, and
she helps with Vacation Bible
School every summer.
All these activities,
Watercutter said, have helped
her become involved with her
community and build lifelong
relationships.
For example,
Watercutter said that she has
really come to admire class-
mate Kendra Rindler through
all the time they have spent
together in softball and on the
Academic Team.
Shes always been one
of the smartest people Ive
known, and she gets along with
everyone, Watercutter said. I
dont think one day went by
during softball season where
we werent talking and laugh-
ing about something.
Watercutter said that many
of the skills she has learned
in her extracurricular activi-
ties have helped her grow and
develop as a person. Some
of the activities she considers
most valuable include Drama
Club, softball and youth group.
Drama Club helped me
to realize that being in front
of people really isnt all that
bad, she said. It pushed me
out of my comfort zone, and I
had a great time performing in
front of the audiences. Softball
has taught me to work with
a team. It has helped me to
understand others, even when
we have conicting personali-
ties and goals. Youth group, I
feel, has been the most helpful,
though. Its helped me grow
and strengthen my faith, which
I gure Im going to need as I
go off to college.
For college next fall,
Watercutter hopes to attend
either Wright State University
or the Ohio State University.
She plans to major in business
because she enjoys working
with people and is able to com-
municate well with others.
There exists little doubt of
Watercutters future success in
college given her excellence in
her high school curriculum.
If you were to look up
model student in a dictionary,
there should be a picture of
Jenna Watercutter, said SHHS
science teacher Randy Hoying.
She has all the attributes that
top students should havea
natural curiosity and desire to
learn; the ability and intuition
to see patterns, relationships
and connections between vari-
ables; and the maturity and
motivation to complete tasks
on time. Jenna has a pleasant
disposition that makes it easy
for others to work with her and
the intellect to handle even dif-
cult material. She is denitely
an academic achiever and a real
pleasure to have in class.
Hoyings chemistry and
physics classes have been some
of Watercutters favorites in
high school.
His classes were difcult
to understand, but he took the
time to explain them to every-
one when he or she asked for
help. He really made us think.

Youth Group and is an advisor
for the Junior High Scholastic
Bowl team. Additionally, Hess
is the current president of
Coldwaters Students Against
Destructive Decisions (SADD)
organization. This organization
is one that has been especially
important for Hess.
Mercer County has one
of the highest underage drink-
ing rates in the country, and
this has hampered a non-drink-
ing student such as me from
advancing socially with many
people, Hess said. One of
my friends last year decided to
start a SADD chapter. With no
funding and only 11 members,
we didnt expect much to come
out of the group, but it was
something we deemed neces-
sary to curb some of the dan-
gerous decisions being made
by our peers.
In one year, nevertheless,
the group has more than tripled
in size, growing to 35 mem-
bers.
To see the interest being
taken in a group like this and
to have these people through-
out the school inuencing other
students in a positive way is a
very rewarding thing to see,
Hess said.
In the classroom, Hess said
his favorite classes have been
his abstract math classes like
algebra and calculus.
These types of math class-
es, for me, are the most dif-
cult, but they are also the most
rewarding, he said.
He also enjoyed all of his
chemistry and physics cours-
es with high school science
teacher Chuck Alig, consider-
ing Alig to be an exemplary
teacher at the high school.
He comes to support many
of the schools activities, Hess
said. He is a father and fam-
ily man. He also is a wonder-
ful teacher both in and out of
the classroom. He is always
willing to listen to a students
problems, whether it is related
to issues on a lab activity or
issues at home.
Alig, too, returns Hesss
regard, appreciating his contri-
butions to the class.
Aaron has all the good
qualities that we look for in a
person, Alig said. He has a
very good work ethic, is very
dependable and is a person
people like to be around. I have
really enjoyed having Aaron
as a student these past three
years.
In the fall, Hess will be
pursing a degree in Catholic
Studies at Marian University
in Indianapolis. He plans to
become a priest.
said she also beneted from
the relationships she has devel-
oped over the years with her
upperclassmen.
I would say the upper-
classmen I have watched the
past three years have been my
role models, she said. The
upperclassmen who were
involved in a lot of the same
activities as me, especially
the ones in band, set a great
example and made me work
hard so I could hopefully live
up to them when I became a
senior.
Now, as a senior, Moorman
does act as a leader for her
underclassmen, passing on the
wisdom she has gained over
her own high school years.
In fact, Moorman does offer
this bit of advice to her under-
classmen: Enjoy the time you
have in high school, she said.
It goes by so quickly, and
you dont want to waste the
time you have. Be involved,
have fun and dont live with
regrets.
Throughout Moormans
own high school years, she has
been thankful for the constant
support she has received from
her parents, Tim and Susan.
They always encourage
me and believe that I can do
anything I set my mind to,
Moorman said. No matter
what I am doing, whether it be
performing for band or drama
or competing in swim or track,
I always can count on the fact
that my parents will be there to
support what I am doing.
Moorman knows this sup-
port will continue as next fall
she begins the next stage of
her educational career at the
University of Dayton. There,
she plans to major in engineer-
ing.
Engineers get to use math
and science everyday, and that
is what I want to do with my
career, she said. My math
and science classes have been
my favorite. On the science
side, I especially love physics.
I get to apply math to real-life
problems like mechanics and
electricity. It is fun to see how
the world works and apply the
math I love to that. Engineers
are changing the world and
helping people everyday, and
I think that sounds like some-
thing I would be happy doing
the rest of my life.

Of these many activities,
Roehm said she has most
valued her participation in
sports.
They have taught me to
work with a team to achieve
a common goal. They teach
me to depend on and give
praise to others. On a team,
everything does not revolve
around one player. All pieces
are needed to have success,
she said.
Roehm said she will
always cherish her memories
of playing volleyball at the
state tournament.
It is an experience that
many dont get to have, she
said. It is something I will
not forget. Getting to go to
state with my teammates was
a once in a lifetime experi-
ence.

Goettemoeller serves as his
high school class president,
keeps stats for basketball,
volunteers at the hospital
and attended Buckeye Boys
State. He also volunteers as
a mass server at his church,
and he works at Coldwater
Bens.
These many activities,
Goettemoeller said, have
been valuable through the
many experiences they
have offered and through
the opportunities they have
given him to serve his com-
munity.
For exampl e,
Goettemoeller said the vol-
unteer projects with which
he has helped through
Columbian Squires have
been both fun and reward-
ing. He said his job respon-
sibilities at Bens have
helped him gain a good
work ethic. Golf, too, he
said, has helped him devel-
op new skills.
Before going out for
golf, I had never really even
been on a golf course, but by
the end of my senior season,
I had become an average
golfer, he said.
Supporting Goettemoeller
in his many endeavors have
been his parents, Rick and
Doris.
My parents have de-
nitely had the greatest inu-
ence on my life, and they
have also been my greatest
supporters, Goettemoeller
said. They always encour-
age and support me in all
my activities, and they are
always there when I need
someone to talk to.
Goettemoeller said he
also considers his parents to
be his role models in life.
I always try to do my
best in school, and I follow
the moral values my parents
have taught me, he said.
From his own success
and leadership at CHS,
Goettemoeller, himself, has
become a role model for his
underclassmen. He leaves
with them this bit of advice:
Stay true to yourself, and
dont conform to what soci-
ety may be pushing on you.
Take advantage of your time
in high school. It goes fast,
so get as involved as you
can. Take advantage of all
the clubs, sports and activi-
ties open to you. I have
learned that if you stay
focused on your academics
and get involved in extracur-
ricular activities, you will
be making the most of your
high school experience.
Goettemoeller plans to
attend a four-year college in
the fall. He is yet undecided
where he will attend, and
he is not yet decided on a
major.
In whatever path he
chooses, nevertheless,
Forsthoefel expresses his
complete confidence in
Goettemoellers ability to
succeed.
His intelligence far
exceeds that of many of his
classmates, Forsthoefel
said. He comprehends ideas
and theories beyond the high
school level. Finally, Travis
is a great gentleman. His
maturity is far above oth-
ers. He is compassionate for
many causes and lives up
to the expectations. His is
not fake! He is the real deal.
If Travis ran for political
ofce, I would vote for him.
I wish more students could
be like him.

which created a fun environment
overall.
Scott said he appreciated
Hoffmans efforts in his chem-
istry classes.
He is one of the most
dependable, hardworking stu-
dents I have known in my 25
years of teaching high school
science, Scott said. In addition
to his work ethic, Justin is among
the fastest-learning students Ive
ever had. In fact, looking back
over my entire career, I can
count on my ngers the num-
ber of students Ive known that
match or exceed his intellect.
Last year in my AP chemistry
class, Justin was always atten-
tive, diligent and focused, and I
was always satised that Justin
was learning and understanding
whatever material we covered
in class. Whenever my presenta-
tion of material wasnt sufcient
for him, he didnt hesitate to
ask questions. My estimation of
his success was conrmed last
spring when Justin obtained the
highest possible score of ve on
the advanced placement chemis-
try exam.
Because Hoffmans love for
chemistry and his apparent apti-
tude for the eld, he plans to
major in chemistry next year in
college.
Id love to be able to
research and learn more about
this eld, he said. Also, atoms
fascinate me.
Hoffman will pursue his stud-
ies in the fall at the University of
Notre Dame.

said, have been very valu-

Being active in the com-
munity is very benecial not
only to you, but also to oth-
ers, he said. While going
out and engaging in activities,
talents are shared and friend-
ships are made.

Shawnee in soccer this year.

past ve or six years. We beat
them 1-0 on their senior night.

high school careerin all his
activitieshe has depended
upon the support of his par-
ents, Chuck and Carol.
They support me in
everything I do, Mertz said.
Always, they push me to
be the best I can be, but at
the same time, they always
are proud of me, regardless
of the outcome. I wouldnt
be the successful student and
person I am today without
the unwavering support and
positive inuence my parents
bestow upon me.
In moving forward onto
the next stages of his life
college and careerMertz
leaves his underclassmen
with this piece of advice:
To underclassmen I advise
always giving forth your best
effort in everything you do.
Why sell yourself short? By
always working hard, youll
make yourself the best person
you can be. Also, dont spend
too much time thinking about
the future; rather, live for the
now. High school ies by, and
senior year comes before you
know it. Live life one day at a
time, and make the most out
of every opportunity.

taught me countless leader-
ship skills, as well as how to
interact with others and how
to delegate tasks, she said.
Mock Trial has taught me
public speaking skills, as
well as how to effectively
voice my opinions.
Nighswander said she
is grateful for the guidance
she received from high
school government and his-
tory teacher Bill Sell, who
advises the Mock Trial
team.
He has taught me how
to get my opinions across
in an efcient manner and
how to be a more condent
person, she said.
Nighswander said she
also will never forget the
experiences she was able
to have this past summer at
Buckeye Girls State.
It was truly amazing
to see girls from all over
the state come together and
form a functioning govern-
ment and community, she
said. We worked together
well, gained knowledge
and insight and made great
friendships.
In all of her endeavors,
both academic and extra-
curricular, Nighswander
said she values the constant
encouragement she receives
from her mom.
My mom has always
supported me in everything
that I do, Nighswander
said. She has always
helped me in any way that
she can, and she has always
pushed me to do my best.
She has always helped me
overcome all challenges
that have come my way.
In high school, many
of these challenges result-
ed from Nighswanders
jammed-pack schedule.
From school and home-
work to extracurriculars and
sports to spending time with
friends and family, I am con-
stantly busy, Nighswander
said, but I wouldnt have
it any other way.
In the fall, Nighswander
plans to attend college.
She has not yet decided on
a school or a major, but
she is considering pursing
a degree in nursing, den-
tal hygiene or English.
For school, she is looking
at Kent State University,
Ball State University, the
University of Notre Dame
and the American University
of Paris.

He never gave me a straight
answer until I attempted to
work the problem out on my
own. Even, then, if I still was
having trouble, he worked the
problem out step-by-step with
me, Watercutter said.
Other classes Watercutter
enjoyed in high school include
English and anatomy.
The teachers made the
material enjoyable, even when
it was difcult, Watercutter
said. The classes were chal-
lenging and helped to push me
to do better.
In all her challenges both in
her classes and in her extracur-
ricular activities, Watercutter
said she has been able to depend
on her mom as a strong sup-
porter.
She keeps me on track,
Watercutter said. She helps
keep me on schedule and always
encourages me to do my best.
She always said she doesnt
care about my grades, which in
turn has pushed me to try harder
to make her proud of me.
Watercutters parents do
have reason to be proud of her.
Not only has she excelled in her
many endeavors at St. Henry,
but throughout her high school
years, Watercutter has also
learned to stand by her own
principles.
My biggest challenge has
been avoiding negative inu-
ences, Watercutter said. I
overcame it by nding people
who share the same core values
as me and talking things over
with my parents. My advice to
underclassmen is to never try to
impress people by being some-
thing youre not. Its annoying
and, in turn, only makes you
upset. Ive learned that there
are people who will accept you
for who you are. You just need
to have the courage to be your-
self.

First, she advises them to
get all they can out of high
school.
Ive learned that the more
effort and studying you put into
your classes in high school, the
more satised youll be with
yourself, and youll feel more
condent about going into
college or whatever the next
step of your life may be. You
want to be able to look back
and know that youve accom-
plished great things and not
have any regrets, she said.
Second, she reminds her
underclassmen of the impor-
tance of staying true to one-
self.
I live my life by the words
of Dr. Seuss: Be who you are
and say how you feel because
those who mind dont matter,
and those who matter dont
mind. There have been plenty
of times when Ive been the
odd man out for not doing
what everyone else wants to
do, but what is popular isnt
always right, Koch said. Ive
learned to do what makes me
happy and to stick up for what
I believe in. Like my mom
always tells methe only
thing that matters is that you
can lie your head down on
the pillow at night knowing
youve done nothing to harm
yourself or others.
Next year, Koch will be
attending Miami University in
Oxford, where she will pursue
a career in school psychology.

one who is willing to listen
to me. Someday, I want to be
just like him, she said.
Schwietermans mom, too,
has been a constant support.
Since the time I could
start walking, she has always
been there for me through
thick and thin. She encour-
ages me to always do my best
in school, and I believe thats
why I have had great achieve-
ment in school, she said.
Schwieterman said her
mom has also been her big-
gest fan in her many athletic
and extracurricular activi-
ties. These activities include
basketball, softball, track
and eld, volleyball, Sports
Medicine Club, National
Honor Society, choir and the
school musical and Future
Business Leaders of America.
Schwieterman also serves
mass at her church, sings at
masses and helps with other
church projects. She assists
with the pole vault at junior
high track meets, referees
fth- and sixth-grade girls
basketball tournaments and
tutors a student in algebra.
Schwieterman has valued
her time and participation in
all these activities, but admits
basketball has always been
her passion in life.
I love playing the game,
she said. I have gained so
many close relationships with
every single one of my team-
mates, on and off the oor.
Schwieterman said she will
never forget making it to State
her junior year in basketball.
All teams dream of mak-
ing it to the big house, but
not everyone does, she said.
Our team received a lot of
banners and posters and cards
from everyone in the commu-
nity and also from the outside
as well. Nothing will ever take
away the memories that were
made that year on the jour-
ney making it to state. That
season has helped me realize
you should always cherish the
time you have with people
while you can.

organization.
Brooke has served
Ohio FBLA as the reporter
and has published two state
newsletters that keep mem-
bers informed of events and
deadlines. Her newsletter has
received acclaim from both
the state executive com-
mittee and national ofce,
said Kevin Browning, PHS
business teacher and FBLA
adviser.
Browning recommends
Boznango as a top achiever at
Parkway High School and in
the county.
Brooke is a very active
young lady at Parkway High
School, he said. She also
maintains a GPA of greater
than 3.5. She also is enrolled
in college classes at Wright
State Lake Campus. With
classes such as honors
English, calculus and college
courses, Brooke has shown
that she is a great student and
great leader.
Boznangos high school
years, nevertheless, have not
been without their challenges.
She said her biggest chal-
lenge was being diagnosed
with Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder (OCD).
I was scared and unsure
of what to do, she said.
However, through family
and friends, I have pushed
through and am doing very
well. I have such an amazing
support system around me: I
never would have been able to
overcome this without them.
Friends, family and God have
helped me overcome this
and now my OCD is under
control, and Im happier than
ever!
In this challenge and oth-
ers she has encountered in
life, Boznango said she con-
sistently looks to her mom,
Lisa, as her biggest supporter
and her role model in life.
She is a single mother
and my hero, Boznango said.
She pushes both me and my
brother, Matthew, to do our
very best in everything we
do. She never stops believing
in us, even when we dont
believe in ourselves. Without
her, I denitely wouldnt
be where I am today. She
is strong, brave and a great
mother. Shes not just my
mom, but she is also one of
my best friends. Someday, I
hope to be able to stand strong
against the trials of life by the
example she has set, showing
and teaching me how to live
my life and succeed.
In the fall, Boznango will
be attending Rhodes State
College in Lima, where she
will double major to earn
degrees in business manage-
ment and occupational thera-
py assisting.
In moving on to this next
stage of life, she leaves her
underclassmen this bit of
advice: Just be yourself,
she said. High school kids
can smell fear, so dont be
afraid to just be you and be
condent. Youll gain respect
and enjoy your high school
career so much more. Also,
get involved! Dive in headrst
into clubs and organizations.
Dont wait until your senior
year to discover the wonders
that come with being involved
in school organizations.

religion classes to preschool-
ers and serves as a lector and
communion distributor at her
church. She also volunteers for
the organization Horses and
Humans Helping Each Others,
through which she helps pro-
vide therapy for disabled stu-
dents as they ride horses.
Being involved in outside
activities is important because
it shows that you are willing
to get involved in your com-
munity to help others and not
just do things for person gain,
Bergman said.
She said she has most
valued her time spent volun-
teering with the horse therapy
organization.
I got the chance to see
the struggles that some peo-
ple go through, she said. It
has helped me realize that life
could be a lot harder for me
than how it is.
Bergman said she has also
enjoyed playing basketball
throughout her high school
career, and she will cherish
the time she has spent with her
teammates.
We have all become very
close and consider each other
family, and that is important to
have when working in a unit,
she said.
Bergman has not yet
decided where she will attend
college next fall, although
she is considering Wright
State University, Ohio State
University and Ohio Northern
University. She has also not
yet decided on a major, but is
interested in the business and
accounting elds.

Wilker said, each has brought
a new experience to the table. I
feel privileged to have worked
with so many different people
throughout my high school
career. Although I often feel
short on time, I have enjoyed
getting to know all sorts of
personalities and be a part of
these numerous activities.
Wilker has also made some
wonderful high school memo-
ries. One of his most memo-
rable high school experiences
was earning a Superior rating
at the State Marching Band Fi-
nals at the University of Day-
ton this fall.
The band worked hard
all summer with this goal in
mind, Wilker said, and it
was very satisfying to see this
goal through. The last time the
band earned a Superior rating
was my freshman year, and it
was rewarding to help bring
back this honor to Marion Lo-
cal.
Because of the value
Wilker has received from his
high school experiences, he
encourages his underclassmen
to take in and enjoy all high
school has to offer.
I have learned that high
school is a place of opportuni-
ties, experiences and memo-
ries, he said. Dont keep to
yourself or to only a certain
group of people: branch out,
meet as many people as you
can and be yourself. Do what
you want to do, and stand up
for what you believe in.
Next year, Wilker hopes
to attend Ohio State Univer-
sity, Ohio University, Miami
University or the University
of Dayton. He plans to major
in business and is considering
also studying sports adminis-
tration and management.
I enjoy professionalism
and love to travel, Wilker
said. Business is an exciting
eld with many possibilities.
I am also an avid sports fan.
While I do not have much
personal talent, I enjoy being
a part of the sporting atmo-
sphere. Being able to work
with a sports team in a busi-
ness setting would be a very
enjoyable job for me.

mY TURN
It seems that almost every
writer, broadcaster, or TV type
that comments on the national
sports scene, has expressed his
thoughts on the child abuse
situation at Penn State University.
Despite all the words, I still have
a few questions concerning the
happening and consequences.
Head Football Coach, Joe
Paterno, and Penn State
University President, Graham
Spanier, were dismissed within
days after Jerry Sandusky was
accused of the rape of a young
boy in a University locker room.
I would ask the following for
purposes of discussion: What
would have been the reaction
of the Penn State Board and the
national press if Sandusky had
been an academic professor at
Penn State? I would hope that
any academic administrator
who received information about
abuse concerning Sandusky and
did not report it to the police or
his immediate superior, would
be fired by the University and
arrested by the legal authorities.
This actually happened to Tim
Curley, Athletic Administrator,
and Gary Schultz, a University
Vice President, who did not
report information to the
police. If Sandusky had been an
academic, would they have fired
the Dean of the College and the
President of the University? I
think not. Penn State football
and Joe Paterno have been in the
spotlight for years. They have
been generally considered as the
best example of what is right
in major college football. This
child sex abuse story was such a
scandal University officials felt
they had to do something drastic
and immediate. Joe Paterno
had received criticism for
many years for being old, slow,
perhaps a senile, and basically
out of it. Several members of
the press now described Paterno
after the accusation of his long
time assistant, as an all-powerful
individual who dictated all
decisions in the football
program and other matters.
The grand jury investigating
the crisis indicated that Paterno
did report the incident to his
superiors and was guilty of no
crime. Some think Paterno was
the all-powerful dictator who
ignored whatever he wished to
get another win. Some think
Paterno was a figurehead who
sat in the press box during games
without a head set, and was not
running anything at Penn State.
Either way he was designated
as the Captain of the ship, who
was chosen to go down with the
vessel even if someone else was
at the helm.

Writers note:
The Bride and I have
discussed Paternos situation
several times. She disagrees
with my assessment. The Bride
thinks Joe should be fired for
not going directly to the police.
I understand this position.
My only response, he went to
his superiors which I think is
normal in this situation, and he
should not be responsible for
their action or lack thereof.
Two Mercer County
schools are hosting holiday
tournaments this week as
Celina and Parkway both
welcome other schools into
the county.
At Celina, the ovisco
Classic will take part tonight
and Friday night while
Parkway hosts both a boys and
girls tournament this evening
and tomorrow.
In other games, Marion
Local hosts Lima Shawnee
in a non-league battle tonight
while Coldwater welcomes in
Delphos Jefferson for a non-
conference contest tomorrow
night. Marion Local also is
in action Friday night as the
Flyers travel to Wapakoneta.
on the girls side, St. Henry
resumes play this evening as
the lady Redskins travel to St.
Marys.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.

rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found

If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
