SWIM LESSON GUIDE The Tot programs are for students 12 months to 3 years; the Preschool program is for

ages 3 5 years (with 6 & 7 years by special permission) and the regular level classes are for ages 6 14 years (with 5 years by special permission). Parent & Tot Swim Lessons This class is for parents who would like to introduce their young children (age 12 months - 3 years) to the aquatic environment. Parents accompany their children in the water and learn to teach them basic orientation and safety skills. Children and parents learn to be safe and have fun in the water, which is a pre-requisite for learning to swim. Tiny Tot Swim Lessons This is an introductory course for younger swimmers (age 2 - 3 years) who are ready to be introduced to the water without parental involvement. Water adjustment, water play and water safety skills are emphasized. Submerging and floating skills may be introduced. Level 1 (Preschool Level 1) There are no prerequisites for Level 1. The objective of Level 1 is to help students feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. Emphasizes basic aquatic skills; it is these skills in which the students will build on as they progress through the Learn to Swim Levels as well as safe practices in and around the water. Level 2 (Preschool Level 2) Student must be able to submerge completely, blow bubbles under water, and float on their front and back comfortably with assistance. The objective of Level 2 is to give students success with fundamental floating and stroking skills. Emphasizes basic floating and stroking skills on both the front and back. Level 3 (Preschool Level 3) Student must be able to float independently (front and back), jump into the pool, roll from front to back and back to front without assistance, as well as stoking on front and back. The objective of level 3 is to build on the skills in

level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Emphasizes stroking and breathing skills and introduces elements of additional (new) strokes. Level 4 Students must be able to swim front crawl and backstroke with breathing for 12 yards (1 pool width) and tread or float for 30 seconds. The objective of Level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skill. Students will work on increasing endurance with familiar strokes and will be introduce to new strokes such as breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly. Level 5 Students must be able to swim 25 yards (1 pool length) of fronts crawl, backstroke, and 12 yards (1 pool width) of breaststroke, elementary backstroke (with whip kick), and tread water for 1 minute. The objective of level 5 is coordination and continued development of previously learned strokes. Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly). Level 6 Students must be able to perform continuously a long shallow dive into deep water, swim 50 yards each of front crawl, and backstroke, followed by 25 yards each of breaststroke and elementary backstroke (with whip kick), finishing up with treading water for 2 minutes. The objective of level 6 is to refine strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances. Alternative options for the level of swimmer include Junior Lifeguard, Junior Swim Instructor, and Swim Team.
