Increasing pressure and temperature conditions in the combustion chamber of turbo charged low engineout emission diesel motors are taking todays standard cast iron cylinder liner materials to their limits in terms of strength and wear resistance primarily in commercial vehicles.New developments in the commercial vehicle require the tensile strengths of 340 to 400 MPa and a Youngs modulus of 130 to 150 GPa for improving the materials fatigue limit and wear resistance, which are two important properties for engine liner materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) because of their exceptionally small diameters as well as their high Youngs modulus ( 1 TPa), tensile strength ( 200 GPa) and high elongation (10-30%) in addition to a high chemical stability, are attractive reinforcement materials for light weight and high strength metal matrix composites. with the addition of 0.5 wt% CNTs, ultimate strength and yield strength of nano composites improved by 71.6% and 70.27% respectively.

METHODOLOGY
1. Synthesis and Characterization of Gray cast iron MMC with different reinforcements: Gray
Cast Iron MMCs shall be developed with different reinforcements like carbon nano tubes and Silicon Carbide (1% vol.) nano particles. Gray Cast Iron MMC shall be synthesized by ultrasonic cavitation assisted fabrication and subjected to characterization 2. Preparing MMC cylinder liner by centrifugal casting technique: The Gray Cast Iron MMC can be prepared by using centrifugal casting technique. In this technique, a permanent mold is rotated about its axis at high speeds (300 to 3000 rpm) as the molten metal is poured. The molten metal is centrifugally thrown towards the inside mold wall, where it solidifies after cooling. The casting is usually a fine grain casting with a very fine-grained outer diameter, which is resistant to atmospheric corrosion, a typical situation with pipes. The inside diameter has more impurities and inclusions, which can be machined away.

3. Performance and combustion studies: Performance and combustion studies shall be carried out
on diesel engine by using Grey cast iron MMC cylinder liner produced by using centrifugal casting. The performance behavior of Grey cast iron MMC cylinder liner at different combustion temperatures and pressures shall be studied. The combustion behavior of Grey cast iron MMC cylinder liner that includes Convective Energy Transfer, Deposition of Vapors and Particles from Combustion Products, Micro-scale Combustion and Turbulent Flames shall also be studied.
