Note about bootblock recovery and virus protection

If for any reason the BIOS becomes corrupt (for example a power cut during the flash process), the PC may no longer be able to boot. In this situation it is still possible to recover the BIOS using a special procedure known as crisis recovery.

To recover the BIOS in crisis mode

1 2 Obtain an empty diskette Create a crisis diskette Obtain an empty diskette. It does not have to be a system diskette. Copy the BIOS ROM file (example JH0102US.ROM) to the diskette. Do not copy any other files. Rename the file AMIBOOT.ROM make sure you have the exact same spelling. Remove the power cord from the PC, open the cover, and set switch 7 on the motherboard (labelled BIOS recovery) to the ON position. Close the cover and reinsert the power cord. Insert the diskette in the floppy drive. Switch on the PC. The PC will beep once and the boot process will start automatically. The screen will remain blank, but there will be activity on the floppy drive. DO NOT SWITCH OFF THE PC DURING FLASH. Once complete, the PC will emit a long continual beep. Switch off the PC, remove the diskette and reset switch 7 to the OFF position. The PC should now boot normally.

Set motherboard switch

Why does HEWLETT-PACKARD change the BIOS ?

Minimizing the number of BIOS revisions is an objective of Hewlett Packard. However Hewlett Packard may release new versions for any one of the following reasons: ENHANCEMENTS Where a major new feature is available on the market. PROCUREMENT ASSURANCE Where Hewlett Packard qualifies an additional supplier for a component in order to secure procurement. COMPONENT ROLL Where a semiconductor supplier introduces a new version of a component, and stops the production of the previous version for technological improvement reasons. QUALITY To improve the quality, Hewlett Packard has to make use of a more reliable component, or to implement a design change. COST Hewlett Packard uses a different supplier who can supply the equivalent component at a much lower price. BUG FIX Bugs discovered in the previous version are fixed.
