Admission to Upper Division Engineering Degree Programs

The Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science (MCECS) offers courses of study in engineering leading to the bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Students may declare engineering as their major at any time after enrolling at Portland State University (PSU). However, engineering majors must be admitted formally to a specific degree program in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering before they will: 1) be allowed to enroll in restricted upper division courses offered by the College; and 2) be graduated from that program. The appropriate department chair may grant exceptions. Typically students apply for admission to the upper division degree program as they enter their junior year. ELIGIBILITYTo be eligible for admission, each student must complete all courses listed on the back page of the engineering upper division degree program application with a minimum grade of C, must have a minimum GPA of 2.33 in all engineering and computer science courses, and must have completed a minimum of 90 total credits (or be a post baccalaureate student). THE PROCESSApplications are available in MCECS departments, the MCECS Office of Student Services, or www.pdx.edu/cecs/admissions.html Current PSU StudentsStudents may apply to an upper division degree program if they anticipate completing all eligibility requirements for the program prior to the term of admission. Transfer StudentsStudents transferring to PSU from other institutions who want to be formally admitted to a specific engineering upper division degree program must:

Meet all departmental eligibility requirements. Apply for admission to PSU AND for program admission. All transfer applicants must have one copy of their official transcripts sent to the civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering department, PSU, PO Box 751, Portland, OR 97207 AND an additional copy of their official transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions, Portland State University, PO Box 751, Portland, OR 97207. Engineering majors should schedule an appointment with the MCECS advisor two full terms before applying by calling 503-725-4631.

ADMISSION DEADLINESFall Term, June 15; Winter Term, November 1; or Spring Term, February 1 SELECTIVE ADMISSIONIf the number of eligible applicants for admission to any engineering or computer science upper division degree program exceeds that for which resources are available, acceptance will be competitive. In the event selective admission becomes necessary, the GPA computed for the required for eligibility for program admission will be used. Priority, within reasonable limits, will be given to resident students. Although the primary purpose of the selective admission procedures is to limit enrollment to the number of students who can be served at a high level of quality, it is recognized that the rigid application of these procedures may eliminate applicants with high potential, but who due to circumstances beyond their control, have had limited access to the type of preparatory education that is essential for achieving the high performance level required for admission. All such applicants will be considered on the basis of their life experience and leadership qualities, in addition to their academic achievement. CONTINUATION CRITERIA FOR ENGINEERING MAJORSAfter admission to an engineering upper division degree program, students will be expected to make satisfactory progress toward their declared degree and will be subject to the following rules: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5 The term GPA in all courses taken at PSU must be 2.00 or higher. Upon graduation from the BSCE program, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.33 is required. Junior and Senior engineering courses must be taken with a minimum grade of CAt the conclusion of each term of the academic year, full-time students are normally expected to complete a minimum of 12 credits applicable toward their degree program. Part-time students are expected to complete a minimum of 12 credits per academic year applicable toward their degree program. Students will be placed on probation when their term GPA, as described in #1, is below 2.00 or their progress toward the degree is less than that described in #2. Students placed on probation for two consecutive terms or for a total of three terms will be suspended from specific engineering degree programs. Students also will be suspended if not enrolled in engineering and/or computer science courses for three consecutive terms. Students denied admission or suspended must wait at least one term before reapplying for admission. This waiting period does not apply to those denied due to selective admission.

APPEALSStudents denied admission or suspended may request reconsideration by submitting a petition. The appropriate department chair and the Colleges Academic Appeals Committee will review the petition and supporting materials and a recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean. The appeal must be made within 30 days of notice to the student of denial of admission or suspension.
